Hookah was great, but someone got shot while we were there. So, I’m taking a star away for that. 4⁄5 would return again wearing body armor.

This place is sketchy as hell. Blacked out windows, no lighting, and not sure if they even sell food. Looks like it got turned into a hookah bar. Everyone was lying on the floor on cushions smoking shisha(or what I hope was shisha), and nobody was eating anything, nor did I see a menu or even TABLES. There is a bar and a TV showing soccer. Even for a hookah bar this place was shabby and run down.

If a friend of ours had not taken us to this place we wouldn’t have discovered it on our own. At first glance, it didn’t appear to be open, but we were the first customers to arrive. It’s a family run business and the staff was friendly. We hadn’t tried Somali food before so we asked for their recommendation. They said to go with the bariis hilip ari which was seasoned goat meat grilled with onions served on a bed of delicious rice. The meal came with a choice of soup or salad and we went with the chicken soup– which was nicely flavored and even better with a little lime juice squeezed on top. The main course was really, really good and we ate it in the traditional Somali custom… which is with your hands(well hand, right hand only!) even though they said we could use silverware. Each person got a banana which we split into portions and placed around the platter. Eating with our hands was tricky but they don’t mind if you get food all over the table if you’re enjoying your meal. We were devouring our meal and they offered to bring another portion of goat meat since we kept saying how much we liked it. They brought almost another full platter worth of rice and the owner grilled up another whole plate of goat and onions for us. We’ve tried goat at Kenyan, Indonesian and Pakistani places but this was the best we have had. The goat pieces were not just tender and seasoned to perfection but also nice and meaty. The meat just fell off the bone and the pieces themselves were much less bony than goat we have normally had. Even with the extra portion of goat and rice it was still inexpensive. If you try this restaurant I can’t recommend the goat strongly enough.
