Bob claims to be a window restoration guy but he’s actually just a window modification guy, he does not know how to rebuild or repair existing wooden sash windows, so beware if that’s what you intend to call him for. His gimmick is that he tries to push double pane windows which he makes by inserting a glass double pane into the wood frames claiming they’ll save you electricity. This is a ridiculous idea because what is the point of putting double pane windows on an old vintage building which has no insulation inside the walls? He had no answer to that question when I asked him. He claims that it’s going to be an energy saver but the reality is that if the walls have no insulation the windows are really not going to help much, and he knows that but hopes you don’t. His prices are absolutely outrageous, over $ 1,000 for ONE window! Valley Wood Window is a much better value for money, and they can actually repair and/or replace your wood sash windows with exact copies, which is often a very cost-effective solution. I honestly would not recommend Artisan Window and Sash for anything.

If you own a home in a historic district, you really should know about Artisan Sash.(If you own a home anywhere, and you value excellent workmanship at a fair price– also good to know.) My 1926 home was suffering from Window Fatigue. The doublehung windows either didn’t close, or had to be propped to stay open. Blackened, broken sash cords protruded hideously from some of them. They were so wobbly in their frames that the whole house rattled like a maraca any time a train passed by(several blocks away.) When I first determined to improve this situation, I contacted one of Sacramento’s better window replacement companies. They could have replaced all the windows with super-high-tech glass and new frames– except that the historic association would not approve this new-fangled approach. What Artisan Sash does is to place doublepaned glass in the existing wooden frames. No historical issues involved. Artisan Sash brings its workshop right to your front door in the form of a little workshop-trailer. They repaired and refitted my miserable windows. No more icky black cables: the windows now slide smoothly on springloaded tracks. Cozily weatherstripped all around: no more maraca concerts in the middle of the night! PLUS– in the midst of all this practicality, owner Bob Henderson also suggested some extremely satisfying aesthetic upgrades: adding mullions to the front windows to enhance their«Arts&Crafts» style, and using glittering art glass for the bathroom windows. Furthermore, having Artisan Sash do the job saved me about $ 3000 compared to the newfangled guys!(and their work would have required the additional expense of a building license.) Bob Henderson and his crew are knowledgeable, skilled, and attentive to detail. And nice!
