While Oregon has a semi-​strange set of liquor control laws, I will say that I approve of the fact that the state’s licensed package stores tend to be clean, well maintained, and generally carry a very good selection of hooch. The Downtown Liquor store location in Eugene, not far from the municipal courthouse (a bit ironic, perhaps), is probably my favorite location in the city. Perhaps it’s just my perception of the place, but it seems to have the best selection by far, particularly of bourbon, rye, and whiskey. Plus, the clerks generally seem to know their stuff quite well, and are very willing to make recommendations. High traffic times are, unsurprisingly, Friday evenings and weekends, since this is the closest location to the university – but I’ve seen them absolutely refuse to sell anything to people who they even THINK have a fake ID (as well they should).
