Green Diamond Tire E-Commerce

Green Diamond manufactures and sells winter tires. Years ago when I bought my first set of Green Diamond Icelander tires, molding silicium carbide granules into the rubber compound was a rather unique idea, and to my knowledge Green Diamond was the only company offering the technology, and the tires perform quite well on show and ice. Today other manufacturer offer the same technology.
The problem with these tires is not the technology, but rather the quality control surrounding the remanufacturing of remolded tires using old casings — which Green Diamond does. The idea of reusing old tire casings to produce new tires is appealing since it reduces the consumption of earth’s resources and services. That being said, rubber loses its elasticity over time, turns brittle and begins to break down and crack — just look at old rubber weather stripping. So the selection of only casings that will last the life of the remolded tire is very important since a remanufactured tire molded onto a compromised casing has a high probability of failing in the sidewall — a blowout.
My first set of Green Diamond Icelanders developed a soft spot in the sidewall and the internal pressure extruded a visible blister. My second set failed catastrophically — again in the sidewall — while driving over the Oregon Coastal mountain range.
I wrote to Green Diamond and provided pictures of my failed tires, but have not received a response. There are other manufacturers of this type of winter tire, and until Green Diamond addresses their quality control issues, I’d recommend staying away from them.
