Man… I have no idea what happened to this place but I feel like I’m being way too generous with the second star. If you want Russian food, better look elsewhere. If you want good food, look elsewhere. If you just want your food to look pretty, then this place is okay. Three dishes tasted exactly the same. They took some nasty shrimp and fake crab filling, placed it in three different entrees and thought no one would notice. The food tasted like it was pre-made weeks ago. My stomach still hurts. I gave them a second star because at least the food looked great. I took some pictures, but don’t let them fool you. Looks mouthwatering but you’ll end up spending your night in the restroom.

Forget«Red Square.» Né zhdi, né boisya, né prosi. This place is mostly for immigrant parties and you likely won’t feel real comfortable. Russians over 35 never figured out how to be nice to customers. But kitty-corner is a Russian market, RASPUTIN. Fan-freakin-tastic food in their«deli section.» I mean really tasty varieies of authentic Ruskya cuisine that you can buy and eat right outside on one of the wrought-iron tables by the fountain and next to Red Square! — While there, buy & try the boxed Ruskie version of «gingerbread cookies» with raspberry filling(my fave). Hansel & Gretel never had it so good and no wicked witch to deal with. Most erotic cookie in a box you’ll ever find. If you’re adventurous, wash it down with a bottle of «kvash.» Again, don’t expect smiles or basic English skills but the prepared take-out is mouth-watering. Makes me want to hop Aeroflot because, as Lennon(not Lenin!) said, «Moscow girls make me jump & shout…»

I had dinner here with a friend. She’s a doctor. The restaurant owners are her friends. The food was good. I enjoyed the ambience.

Red Square is an odd restaurant because most of the times that I have stopped by for lunch it has been almost empty. A couple times the front door was even locked just after noon but it turned out that the employees were there and they opened it for us. I think the business is more focused on being a bar and patio hangout at night than a lunchtime restaurant. I actually left the first time I came by but then some Russian friends from work took me back later because they said the food is both good and authentic and they were absolutely right. They have some lunch combination specials that are very reasonably priced(around $ 10) and that include soup or salad and an entrée in very large portions. My friends all ordered the traditional borscht(beet soup) and I tried the kharcho(lamb, rice, mushroom and herb soup) for the first time, which was one of the top five best soups I have ever tasted in my life. It was loaded with small pieces of perfectly cooked meat and this amazing spiced broth. For main dishes we had vareniki(meat or potato filled dumplings with a cream sauce), grilled kebabs and blintzes(savory stuffed crepes). We also had some fantastically refreshing fruit drink that had lots of fresh cranberries floating in it. I have since read elswhere that the chef is quite famous for his use of fresh ingredients and he was trained in Europe and Central Asia and the owners are highly regarded restaurateurs from New York. We ate outside on the patio which was nice and casual and the inside of the restaurant is very well decorated and much more formal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who has never tried Russian, Eastern European or Central Asian cuisine before and to all those who know what they are missing.
