Liked it. Didn’t love it. Walked here on a Sunday evening after a 4pm movie at La Paloma theater and it was pretty busy. It was my first visit so I ordered a monk bowl with tofu and brown rice. We also ordered kim chi scallion pancakes as an appetizer for the table. Caveat — I like flavorful spicy food and while there was a LOT of food in the bowl I didn’t think the flavor was anything great. I tried both sauces(and finally added sriracha) but that didn’t do much either. I do like the ambiance and the service was fine so if someone wanted to eat there I might give it a second try and meet them there but I also might try to talk them into trying a new place.

Man, I love this place. I wish it was closer to me, but still worth the 35 minute drive. Awesome food, good service and just an overall positive experience every time I go. Highly recommend!

This is a sweet little small business! The service is friendly and on point! There’s animé playing on all televisions surround the little restaurant. The food is made with care, ingredients are fresh, portion size is on point, prices are right. Family-friendly, too. Does it get any better?! Can you please open a restaurant on the westside in Los Angeles?

I had been thinking of coming here for years but never made it until recently. I have to say, I had enough apps across the street with cocktails beforehand and was not even hungry, but my partner was. WE bellied up to the bar thankfully because this place was packed. WE ordered one bowl because I didn’t plan on eating a thing, only tasting for Unilocal purposes, of course. Their bowls rock. The smell inside is incredible and really makes you hungry when you walk in. The bowls come in an extremely hot mortar style bowl with rice on the bottom and your choice of meat and veggies all in the most fantastic sauce. Ours was so incredible that I probably ate ¼ of it even though I was full to start. I couldn’t help myself, it was that good. Salmon and vegetables in this killer sauce. Sake of course is also available to wash it all down nicely. Staff busy but efficient and the tables turn over fairly quickly. Reasonable prices and a definite lunch stop in my future.

This was our second time eating here and it was a horrible experience to say the least. We came back a second time because the first time was a positive experience. But never again. We showed up before they opened at 5pm and there were several others waiting as well to open. Right away we noticed a shortage of staff. It took time to be greeted and offer drinks. The waitress appeared stressed and confused. She got our drinks wrong but we let it slide. We then ordered appetizers and again we had missing items that we had to remind the waitress about. A good amount goes by and finally the missing appetizers showed up. We ordered the main dishes and guess what? they forgot to place an order for one of our items. It took so long to get the missing dish that the rest of us were almost done. I should say some of us were done. At that point I just couldn’t wait to get out of that place. The first time we ate here, we also ordered dessert — but there was no way we were going through the pain this time. The food was okay — but for some reason not as tasty as the first time. Perhaps new management? I guess we won’t know as i’m done with this place.

5 stars. Quick greeting/drink. Server was very knowledgable and let me know what was popular and the best ways to order. Appetizer hit the table about the time our order was taken. Drinks refilled. MONKBOWL followed up and was ONPOINT! Box/check dropped as soon as we finished after declining dessert. A proper way a dining experience should be. My new fav dining spot in Encinitas. :)

This in an interesting spot for Asian fusion(mostly Japanese/Korean). Their main dish is a Monks Bowl, which is basically a sizzling bi bim bop. The neat part is that you can build it however you want with toppings and proteins. The flavor is pretty good and portions on the large side. You can almost make two meals out of one portion. The pot stickers are really good and definitely worth trying. The line for a table starts surprisingly early in the evening, so get there early or grab a seat at the bar. The staff are friendly and attentive and they have a surprisingly good bar.

I can’t believe I have passed by the place 100 times and never stopped by till now! It’s so delicious! I had the monk bowl with sliced rib eye, it was so flavorful. I love how they serve it in a hot stone bowl that continues to cook the food while you eat. If you like is spicy ask to add jalapeños definitely will be coming back!!!

If it was ok to campout on 101 not to just wait for this place to open but to actually stake a claim to some sidewalk squares so I can live in front of this quaint restaurant, I would have never made an offer on a home. The space is cozy and service is always on point. If you order to-go, just stroll to the back bar and pick up your food so you can bypass the line of potential diners being helped at the host stand. Asian food is at the top of my culinary list and East Village Asian Diner is at the top of that Asian list. I am sure all of the other reviews of this place have said what I am about to say, but I do not care because this is worthy of all the praise. The Monks Stone pot is a fully customizable, personal stone«wok» filled with a plethora of items and a choice of different proteins from Tofu to chicken to, my personal favorite, pulled pork.(When I say that in my head, I sound like Homer Simpson). I have yet to stray form the stone pot. Should I ever do so, I will be sure to update this review and I am sure I will be just as satisfied.

Don’t try to come here at night on a weekend as it can get very busy. Lunch will probably be your best bet if you’re looking to be seated immediately. The menu is short and sweet. There are several noodle dishes, a soup option, and a kimbap option. I’ve had their beef and and vegetable chow mein and it was delicious! The meat they serve is VERY good quality. It’s incredibly juicy and tender. The service is also wonderful. Our waitress checked on us several times and she was genuinely nice. This place was great!

The Kimchi pancakes were really good. They were hot, crispy, and had a nice spicy kick. The Monk bowl was an interesting and tasty dish. I just wish it had a few more shrimp included. I also needed to add more of their hot and soy sauces, as it was rather bland without. The apple cinnamon bites would have been great, but they came out at room temperature. Overall, a 3.5. Good, but could’ve been better.

East Village Asian Diner offers delicious Asian eats right in the heart of Encinitas. I came by this past weekend and they were slammed with a wait, but great service with nice and smiley staff. The evening I came I tried I opted for the *MONK’S STONEPOTBOWL* which was perfect for a filling meal, that was kept nice and warm throughout my dinner, as each bite tasted just like the very first one. piping HOTTT temperature to keep the food warm. I got my bowl with brown rice and added marinated sliced ribeye and kimchi. The beef was tender and flavorful along with the kimchi which was delicious and addictive from all the spices. I LOVE how the bowl comes with baby spinach, julienne zucchini, sauteed mushrooms, over easy egg, marinated bean sprouts, and bamboo shoorts/carrot kinpira. Overall, that Stone Pot Bowl is savory and the perfect meal to fulfill your Korean cravings!~ TIP: Try both their hot sauce and house soy sauce with your bowl for even more amazing flavors.;)

Super! Another location with stone pot. East Village Asian Diner has their own spin on the Korean Bimbimbap called Monk’s Stone Pot. Super delicious. I would have love for the rice to have its burnt crispy edges but none the less the white rice here is spectacular. The base bowl is complete with lots of vegetables and fried egg. You can add your choice of meet for an additional fee. The Spicy Kimchi-chive street cart pancakes on the snacks menu is very good. I would have again love to have the pancakes more crispy but it tasted great otherwise! The Manchu tofu and veggie hot plate entrée is satisfying and tasty. There are loads of vegetables and tofu. You may need to get a togo box. The restaurant is a decent size and about 30 minute wait during peak times. Staff is very friendly and courteous. I hear rave reviews on the noodles so I will have to head back and order me a bowl!

Usually when we visit an eatery that we haven’t been to before, we don’t order the same thing, that way we would have a variety of dishes to try. But today, we three ordered very similar dishes because that’s their specialties here, stone bowls veggie, beef & pork. Wow! Unique & yummy! You might say that it’s just bibimbap, but we really enjoyed the experience, you can hear the bowl sizzled the whole time, and the longer you wait the crispier your rice get. Flavorful bowls. Good, prompt & friendly service. Parking could be a challenge if you park on PCH, so go to one of the side streets. In short, we enjoyed the food, the experience & will definitely be back.

Packed in the PM but just right for the late lunch hours. East Village Asian Diner is perfectly positioned in the main drag of Encinitas by the beach. I’ve heard lots about their signature Monk Pots, so I dropped in on a sleepy weekday afternoon. Zero wait, friendly staff, Erykah Badu crooning through the speakers… nice. I stuck with the basic Monk Pot, no add on’s & no meat. Flavors are very basic(almost bland) so I pumped up my bowl with lots of soy and sriracha. Sauces helped, but nothing about my all-veg bowl tasted particularly ‘Asian’ in flavor. I wasn’t blown away by the Monk Pot concept — it’s essentially a stir fry — but $ 8 for a decent lunch in a comfy location is all good to me. I’ll be back with hopes of discovering some flavor-packed pot toppers.

So good! Get the monk pot! Any of them… Oh wait, I am getting ahead of myself. This spot is a hidden gem on PCH in Encinitas. Here are the reasons you should go, but really the Monk Pot is enough of a reason. 1. Intimate/odd feel — So it is an Asian diner. Like picture Johnny Rockets meets sushi restaurant. There is a good laid back feel but with an Asian kick. 2. MONKPOT and the other food — The Monk Pot is amazing. The rice, protein, veggies and over easy egg, in a scalding rock pot! Come on!!! So good. Also had a few other dishes and sake, all were good. 3. Great Price Point — It is an inexpensive place, the monk pot was around $ 11 – 12 and more than enough food for me. 4. Drink options — Great sake choices and local craft beer options as well. Improvements…The lack of seating makes for long waits and the wait staff was not the greatest. Not sure if it was from understaffing or just not as responsive. Will review again on second visit and confirm. Either way it a great Asian restaurant just a couple blocks from the ocean.

I’ve made it back in here several times since my last review, and after exploring the menu a little further and having great experiences lately(customer service, yeah!), I am happy to put another star on my review for East Village Asian Diner! My go-to right now is the Monks Pot with steak. Still using lots of sauce but I am starting to realize that is what everyone does, so I think it’s the point. Glad to have this place in Encinitas.

If we ate here as often as my wife wanted to, we would weigh 642 pounds. Each. But it’s tough to avoid this place because it is really good. I’m partial to Mr. Lee’s Pulled Pork Burrito. It comes with a really delicious small salad with a delightfully tangy dressing and mandarin oranges. My wife always goes for the Monk Pot. They have several different flavors of those, and she’s tried all of the non-shrimp ones, because she’s allergic to shrimp and she doesn’t want to die. Prices are cheap for Encinitas. A meal with a beer for each person will run around $ 40 – 50. They have four beers on tap, and the beers are cheap. They have a much bigger bottle selection, but when you’re only charging $ 5 for a pint of craft beer on tap I’m just not really overly interested in what your bottle selection looks like. This is a staple of Encinitas, and definitely worth stopping at.

I’m a huge fan of fusion restaurants but this one fell short of my expectations. The staff is great and very attentive(I actually can really only speak for the male bartender since I sat at the bar) so they don’t fall short on customer service. My review is based strictly on the food. I tried the«monk» bowl(with Mongolian beef, chicken and kimchi), the dynamite fries(included carnitas), and the korean beef and kimchi burrito. The best one was the dynamite fries. Carnitas are just purely awesome on its own and when you pair any mexican style meat with fries you basically have a match made in heaven. As for the other dishes, I think they lacked a lot of flavor that I was expecting from the traditional dishes. They tasted somewhat bland. The Monk Bowl is essentially an unchanged Bibimpap(the traditional korean rice mix bowl) and I had to use a lot of the«monk sauce» to add more flavor to it. Same goes for the korean beef and kimchi burrito. The kimchi was decent but the meats just didn’t pack enough of the asian flavor. I get that this is a fusion place but I feel it’s heavily tailored to the western palette. I won’t say this is a terrible place because it’s not but just like what the 2-star says… Meh. I’ve experienced better.

Group of 8 of us stopped by for dinner as soon as the place opened up. Service: fast and attentive. Drinks: beer options on tap, lots of different sake, they offer a beer and sake special for cheap. Food: almost everyone got the monks bowl, which is pretty much just stone-bowl bibimbap. There wasn’t a whole lot of flavor so it had to be drenched in the red sauce they give you(which is different than the gochujang at korean place). We also ordered the bbq pulled pork burrito which was pretty good. The only true Asian-fusion item we saw on the list. One of the members in our party ordered spring rolls, expecting the rice paper wrapped veggies, but instead, out popped egg rolls. So be aware that spring rolls = egg rolls. Overall, the food was alright and the pricing was fair. There’s a lot of different type of asian food on the menu, but if I’m in the mood for Asian food I’ll probably go elsewhere.
