Black Orchid Bed And Breakfast

My husband and I stayed at the Black Orchid B&B for one night in January. We stayed in the Garden Room, which was beautifully appointed. We loved the easy-​to-​use fireplace, the giant jacuzzi tub, the large shower, the two sets of french doors for a cross-​breeze, the comfy king-​sized bed and the ornate décor of the room.
Although it looks like an old Victorian home, Linda and Earl designed it to be a B&B, so it has all the conveniences of a modern dwelling. For example, the bathroom is spacious with a separate toilet area, and the gas fireplace is operated with a switch and a timer. We loved sitting in front of that fireplace on a chilly January evening.
Linda and Earl were gracious hosts. It’s clear this inn is a labor of love for them. They talked with us over breakfast but also gave us our space. I was delighted at the care they took to meet my dietary restrictions. The three-​course meal was delicious, and Linda had even bought me a special sugar-​free, flour-​free treat at Whole Foods. What a nice touch to make me feel like a valued guest!
There are only two guest rooms, so you can be assured of a peaceful stay and personal attention. The neighborhood is quiet too. It’s just a short drive to Pacific Coast Highway or the beach. That stretch of PCH is great for walking, shopping and dining.
The reservation process was unusual. I had to send a check ahead of time, made out to Linda personally, to guarantee my reservation, with the balance due in cash upon arrival. When Linda received my check, she sent a confirmation email. They don’t take credit cards. I didn’t mind this because I had read an online review detailing the process ahead of time, so I knew what to expect.

We stayed at Black Orchid B & B for two nights, August 3^rd and 4^th. We had not been there before. Our room, the River Boat Suite, was very nice and large, with a tiled balcony on two sides and four sets of French doors opening onto the balcony. The bathroom has a very fancy looking tub and a separate large shower with very nice tile work. The toilet is in its own little room. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. I mention this because there were more decorative items and pieces of furniture in the room than you can imagine, but there was no dust. There were nice chairs to sit in out on the balcony and it is a nice place to sit and read. We could even see a bit of the ocean from our room and the balcony.
The breakfasts were very good and the presentation was lovely. Plus, Linda gives you dessert, so no need to eat again until dinner time.
Linda and Earl are very friendly and talkative. Some people may find them a bit too talkative, but they are charming and we enjoyed visiting with them. We would stay there again if we were in the area. They are located a few blocks from the botanical gardens.
We called only a week before we wanted to stay, and I was a bit concerned because they do not take credit cards, only cash or checks. Linda asked me to make out our deposit check to her rather than the business, which also concerned me as to whether there was some kind of problem. She said she didn’t have a business checking account yet. They have been in business for eight years. I did wonder about that. I meant to send a deposit, but didn’t remember to get it done in time. I just e-​mailed Linda to let her know I forgot and she was fine with that. (In general though, you will want to send that deposit, otherwise they won’t hold your room for you if someone else wants to book it.) When we got there, everything was fine and normal, and once you get acquainted with Linda and Earl it won’t seem so odd that they run their business differently than you might expect. You will get their lowest rate if you call and book directly rather than using an on-​line booking service.

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary on November 17 – 18, 2012.
Beautifully furnished rooms, clean with a peek of the ocean! Breakfasts were delicious, 3 course meals! Hosts made us feel right at home. Quiet — No TV, music, kids or pets. Strictly adults-​bed and breakfast.

Beautiful B&B with a great location! Linda and Earl are wonderful hosts that make you feel very welcomed. Will be returning here in the near future.
