What a great atmosphere for an outstanding wine tasting and buying experience! Besides the great wine selection there are plenty of wonderful gift items at the winery as well. We left with a «taster» case of 6 different wines, t-shirts, bar towels and more. Thank goodness we had to be somewhere else or my wife could have shopped on forever. This was our first time to Elkin, NC and the Yadkin Valley wine region. We will certainly be back and you can bet Slightly Askew Winery will be our #1 stop!

Question: What to do on a Thursday afternoon when living in Winston-Salem, NC? Answer: Take the afternoon and drive to one of the many wineries in the state. This time we decided to head to Elkin, NC and taste the juice from Slightly Askew Winery. Notice it doesn’t say Vineyard, that denotes the fact that they aren’t growing grapes on the property but rather buy juice from places as near as just down the road to as far away as Chile. They then mold the juice into the style which they desire. They do have serious wines, including a Johannesburg Riesling, Cab Sauv, even Carmenere, but as the business name suggests they put a little twist on it. Some of the wines are named Jumpin’ Jasmine, Katie B Good, and Mountaineer Pride(so named because one of their sons went to Appalachian State University and spent a lot of money so she says they are trying to recoup the cost!). But it doesn’t end there. There are fruit wines as well, and this is where the names really jump out at you. 1. The Grateful Red — a Cranberry Chianti 2. Slut Dog Sin — an Acai Raspberry Cab Sauv. and my favorite name 3. Nasty Bastard — a Pomegranate Wild Berry Zin Most of the wines are named after their dogs, the nickname for the dogs, or the nicknames for their children. This winery isn’t going to win any stuffy awards but it is certainly fun, and reflects the personality of the owners and really the personality of the area. Laid back and not taking life too seriously. Do yourself a favor and taste some wines there, and enjoy the beautiful drive on your way up there!

My friends and I visited four different wineries today. Hands down… this was the best and is the best winery, PERIOD! Karen was very pleasant and made our«tasting» a wonderful experience. I’ve never had better wine! I will be making the 1 ½ drive again!(Very soon)

The hub and I ventured in for a tasting and had a lovely tasting experience. The name represents the fact that they have a winery and not a vineyard which means that they buy their grapes from all over the world and blend it into their desired format. The tasting room is warm and inviting & our pourer was very friendly. They have sweet fruit wines, off dry whites, and dry reds. The Cab Franc was my favorite. We’ll return again soon.
