Compare Foods is a great place to stock up on produce, especially«tropical» items such as mangoes, limes, bananas, jicama, ginger, avocados, and cilantro. I love that I can buy a small amount of cilantro here instead of the huge bunch that other grocers sell — it’s much cheaper and less wasteful. I usually leave with a big bag of produce for around $ 10. They also have huge packages of Yerba Mate(various brands from South America) in the tea/coffee section, and they carry fun stuff like Sriracha flavored Lay’s potato chips!

Not nearly as expansive as the Avondale Dr. Compare location. This location lacks the huge produce and meat section and seems quite cluttered. Highly recommend their North Durham location — read my glowing review of it here: .

Super, super cheap produce section with a good variety, and their meat section has pretty good prices too! Tomatillos for less than a pound? Don’t mind if I do! I will say that I feel safer going with Andrew than going alone, although I’m not sure why.

This outwardly unimpressive grocery store in a rather rundown shopping center is a surprising treasure trove of goodness. Like everyone before me has said, the produce selection and prices are shockingly impressive. A mere $ 20 got me a pineapple, a Vidalia onion, a red onion, three avocados, a head of garlic, a cucumber, a head of Romaine, two kiwis, two limes, two guavas, a tomato, a Bartlett pear, and a four-pound bag of black beans. I am just amazed! The rest of the store, in my opinion, is nothing to write home about; that is, apart from the ethnic section, which boasts an exhaustive array of authentic Mexican foods and spices. The beer selection is limited, the prices comparative to Harris Teeter or Kroger.

This Compare is the littler brother store to the one north of Hwy 85. We like it because it’s a short drive from Asia Market and Foster’s. The store stocks reasonable amount of produce and is better than a Foodlion in terms of variety. We like the thinly sliced beef cutlets, which can be cooked quickly with pepper sauce or a spicy Asian-type sauce. Our little tip — they have unbelievably fresh cilantro in the produce section!
