I hate winter. Among the top marks against it is the biting cold that coops me up when I so want to get out and exercise. No more walking the cityscape, no more visiting parks, no more riding my bikes at least until late March. So what is there to do in these dismal, gray months for a body starved for the endorphins of aerobic exercise? A couple years ago I found the answer – ice skating. I come here a couple times a month when old fart winter is being a jerk. I’ve also done the Easton location but this one is closer to me. They have a few times a week when skating is open to the public. The noon skates are the best value at $ 4 plus retail skates if you need it. Friday Night Meltdown is the most popular event, and the most expensive at $ 10 includes skates. I like day time openings as it is less busy, for I am not the most graceful person on ice.(truth be told, my skating would better be described as a loooong slip.) Now these are not regular hours; check the website for scheduling. This place is mainly for hockey where high school’s match up, and amateur adult leagues drop the pucks. So public skates are scheduled around the games. They also have skate classes for those who don’t want to learn the hard way. The rink is well maintained and large; music is played, general pop disco and dance tunes are the usual choices. The skates attract a nice variety of skill sets from novice to mastery, and age groups from children to elderly. Ice skating also makes a great date night; I have always gotten«I had a great night» text after an ice skating date. It is the endorphins. Being active is always a primo courting idea. If you are an active person with the winter blues, this is the place to come.

The Columbus Chillers are a great place for hockey if you’re looking to get into an adult league or just starting out. The leagues range from beginner to an Adult B league for the most advanced. Even though the Dublin Chiller is the oldest of the Columbus ice rinks, it’s still well-maintained and is a great facility. It no longer has the Pro Shop it once did(these are still at every other Chiller), but they are still able to sharpen skates, and even better, they can do some repair on skates as well. When my rivets broke on my skates, they were able to replace them for me within 45 minutes of me getting onto the ice for a game. The place has a great staff, who are all very friendly, and with the whole SportsOhio complex surrounding it, it’s a great place to hang out and have fun for the day.

This is our sons second session of ice skating lessons. The instructors are professional and patient with the kids. My only complaint is that are too nice and didn’t force the kids to start at parent/child skate to learn the basics.

As a whole the Chillers are the best hockey experience I’ve ever had. For comparison I’ve played in 5 different leagues in 2 states. The facilities are clean, and in good repair. The games start on time and and schedules are adhered to with a minimal amount of changes. I have some issues with individual ref’s(but who doesn’t). The Dublin rink is the oldest of the Chillers(Easton, Powell, and Icehaus — I’ve never been to the ‘new’ Worthington rink). It’s my least favorite of the four, but it’s still a nice facility. Plenty of parking, good ice. The locker rooms could be a bit larger.
