Terrific meats and fried cheese. The proprietor, who was very nice, and I had some communication difficulties; so I’m not entirely sure what I had– but it was good and inexpensive.

This is my newest food discovery in the neighborhood: THE place for ice cream! Tucked in the back of the restaurant, past the window of steaming and appetizing Dominican dishes, is the freezer containing buckets of Richardson’s ice cream, in about a dozen flavors including cake batter and my favorite, chocolate chip. The portions are generous, the prices down to earth, and the proprietor incredibly friendly. And more desserts might be coming, I hear, like tiramisu and cheesecake. Check it out!!!

It was the airbrush graffiti sign that caught my eye, with the name Caribe and the Dominican Flag — colorful and slightly gangsta. I’m in! Inside there is a food counter, a TV and 3 tables, but really your eye should be on the wall menu checking out all those Caribbean treats — oxtail, snapper, goat, chicken, cow foot, yucca, plantain, pastillos — all for a few dollars. Tempting tempting tempting! I was only after a snack and it was late sunday so I just went for the remaining pastillo(cheese and ham), a beef bolita(fried stuffed yucca) and a serving of plantains. All for 4 dollars. I was told the plantains would be the best I’ve ever had. EVER? Dude — I just came back from Puerto Rico? But seriously — excellent plantains. Semi-sweet and juicy, the best I’ve tried in Boston yet, no arguments. The pastillo was pretty crappy but the bolita was wonderful too — crunchy outside and soft inside. If I can resist the tractor-beam pull from nearby Lee’s and brave cycling around this sketchy part of town more often then I’ll be happy to be back to try the meats and stews.
