I have been stopping by People’s for about 10 years now and I would have to say they’re ranked as one of the best in Detroit/Highland Park for bakeries. I come here often when I am out working in the«hood». One of the City’s gems ! Closed on Mondays as I have came here many times on a Monday and became depressed when they are closed. A «bakery jones» as their little cinnamon rolls are like no other… so good. They are not big, rather small and crusty on the outside and so delicate on the inside. The cookies, donuts and cinnamon rolls are what I like here. The cupcakes are rather average, cakes too, but the pies are the real deal and very good. If I remember right, the News clipping on their wall says something like, Mr People’s moved here from Alabama and started this bakery some 50 years ago. His three son’s carried on the tradition and his recipes. They are still a neighborhood icon in lower Southwest Detroit. Don’t come here on Monday…

This cute bakery has been run by its current owners for 39 years. Prior to that, another family ran a bakery here for 45 years. There has been a bakery in this location for a very long time. I stopped here with a coworker today and it was a pleasant break from our fieldwork out in the sun. My coworker got a carmel cupcake that she said was very good, and I could see how fluffy it was. I got a German chocolate cupcake, also good. They also had rolls, small sweet potato and lemon pies, fritters, donuts, and cronuts. Their menu is somewhat small, but there were definitely other offerings – I was too hungry to note them all. There was milk, bottled water, and soda pop to drink in the cooler. The coffee had run out earlier in the day(It was about 1:30pm), but in the morning there is coffee to be had. Credit card and EBT are accepted for orders totaling at least $ 5. Otherwise, bring cash. There is a small counter with a few stools if you want to eat there, though I suspect most people carry out. The family running the bakery was very friendly, and this place had a charming old fashioned vibe that has become all too rare these days. The prices are right, too – our cupcakes were a dollar apiece. Next time I’m in this area, I will be stopping by to try a mini pie.

This is one of those Detroit area gems that I have driven past a million times before stopping in. It’s a quaint little place, like stepping back in time. Clearly they put time and care in to everything they do and I love the way they box everything the old fashioned way. I usually get the donuts for my mom, and their sweet potato pie is the best on the planet. I recently tried their apple pie and the crust is perfection.

I went here 2 weeks ago. I have tried to go a few times based on reviews but I had missed them because of them being closed. The neighborhood is spotty(I usually have a 4 year old and 6 year old in tow) but the prices were good, the little tarts looked tasty and the donuts were tasty. The varieties are very limited like an old bakery –ie no sprinkles, just fritters, custard, lemon, etc) The atmosphere reminded me of something down south… quaint and peaceful. I don’t know that I would make a run to go back because it isn’t convenient for me but it was good :)

I grew up eating their wonderful pastries and I have never found a better cream puff anywhere. The best thing is that while everyone else is jacking their prices up this bakery is staying true to their customers. From cookies, cakes, pies and so on this place is where you wanna go because the love they put into their products you will definitely taste

Family owned and operated bakery. Donuts and cakes are deeeeeeeelicious. They also make really good birthday cakes. The prices are much better then other bakeries.
