Fifth stop on a diverse pub crawl. I am straight, but I felt very welcome in Menjo’s. There was a mix of patrons of all races and ages, and the bartender mixed a great traditional Martini, as well as more funky girly ones. The neighborhood is sketchy, but the lot is fenced and appears pretty secure.

I’ve only come here for food. The staff has been extremely slow on not-so-busy days. While the food is generally pretty good, it’s a bit far outside it’s value. Macaroni and cheese should not be $ 12 before adding meat.

Do no trust your cars in this lot. It seems the club cares more about having people valet your cars than hiring security. Someone broke into my car earlier this week and busted out the window and messed up the ignition while seemingly trying to steal it. The lot is small so if they had security this would not have happened. A lack of security in Detroit is a major fail to me, as is spending money on valet people over it. And charging $ 5 to park in the small lot is ridiculous anyway. Who would pay the valet to park their car in the bars own lot, right there next to the bar? F these people I also came upon some interesting information a couple days ago about this. A friend of ours was outside talking to the valet guys while my friend and I were dealing with my car situation. The valets made some references to having criminal minds, being felons themselves, and basically acting like they had something to do with the incident. This could have been one guy but that is enough. Not a normal reaction by any definition. Didn’t seem shocked and didn’t suggest calling the cops. And it makes sense seeing as they are outside the entire time. The lot is small enough that if they were out there no one would have touched the cars. From what I heard the lot is supposed to be valet only and you cannot park your car yourself. There is no sign that states this and a few people parked their own cars so it is not clear. Having valet doesn’t equal a requirement, usually an option. The valet people park the cars against the lines to get more cars in there. I guess the way my car was parked in a normal spot meant less cars they could park in that lot. This would be their motivation to try to move or damage my car. It was my dads truck I was driving actually because I was in town visiting. The entertainment and dancing is usually good. Drinks are hit or miss depending on the bartender like anywhere else. I find the guys there make better drinks. I got a watered down excuse for a long island from a woman there after coming from a bar that actually knows how to make them, dissapointing

I came here on my 2nd night in Detroit while visiting from Milwaukee. Note: it was a thursday, which apparently is Twink night, aka college night. Well, I definitely saw that as soon as I walked in the door! This place isnt too far from downtown considering the trek I took to GiGi’s, it’s just west of Woodward on 6 mile. Neighborhood was dark and quiet when I arrived, it looked like most of the clientele at the bar wouldnt set foot outside unless they were going to their car. But those people are asking to get nailed anyway. So, bottom line, you have to pay a valet fee for the attendants to park your car 10 feet away in a gated lot adjacent to the club. Cute I guess? LOL. Inside it had an almost 70’s disco club vibe at its core that had a few coats of attempted revitalization attached to it. Not bad, kinda quiche, but not mind blowing either. It reminded me of La Cage here in Milwaukee. Michigan boys are very cute; they tend not to drink as much beer as we do here in WI(a testament to their fitness, keep it up!), so I was mostly drinking liquor all night. Decent prices, friendly bartenders, struck up conversations with some locals including the local drag queen celeb Sabin. They have a very cute, enclosed and tastefully done patio outdoors too. Speaking of, they had a drag show /monologue session with said Queen, then the dancing(which was fairly minimal to begin with) continued. Gay bars in Detroit, I’ve learned, tend to have their ‘nights’ you go on. Menjos is Thursday nights, but it wasnt nearly as busy as I expected. «School is out, its summer, that’s why [the students] weren’t there,» a local reminded me. I guess I’ll have no choice but to be back! sidenote, the local slang«menhos» may have lived up to its name. lots of action in the bathroom from what I saw. womp womp!

Thursday night dollar drinks started weekends off early during the time I lived in Detroit. It’s a mostly men place, but welcoming to all. They play fairly decent music and the dance floor dominates the club. Bathrooms are a free-for-all and sometimes even more of a party than the bar. There is a tiny patio for fresh air or smoking. The memories! This is one of the first places snuck into with fake ID at a young age, one of the first intros into finding my queer world. The neighborhood can be kinda sketchy, but I never had a problem. Even used to go across the street to an all night coney place.

Menjos is a great place to go for groups and you get the feeling that you are in an actual club and not a slut house like at Backstreet. Menjos is very welcoming to groups and the staff is great. Prices on everything is very reasonable and I have never had any problems at all. I enjoy coming here with a small group of friends and having a good time.

Hmmm, I am interested to see the renovations that Sara mentioned… During the time, I spent in Detroit, I looked foward to my Thursday nights @ Menjo’s. What, I liked best about Menjo’s,??? Mixed Drinks & Beer cost only one dollar, Thursday nights. I never thoguth I would ever see a place, that only charges $ 1. per drink, even if it is Georgie vodka. Belevedre Vodka was only $ 5. per drink…

This Metro Detroit gay bar not only is a great place to grab some cocktails but to shake your tail feather or get your karaōke on. Located on McNichols(7 Mile) in Highland Park, Menjo’s is a fantastic gathering spot whether you’re gay, straight, or somewhere in between. Newly renovated, Menjo’s is a welcoming and always fun local hangout. Throughout the week Menjo’s has drink specials like on Sundays where Long Island’s are a mere 5 bucks. During the warmer months lounge on the patio with a well made drink in hand. My most vivid memory of Menjo’s was a Halloween costume party I attended several years ago. The winner was a guy who dressed up like Aunt Jemima. Need I say more? Their Halloween parties are always a bash! So, whether you’re looking to do a little dancing or a lot of drinking, Menjo’s will certainly satisfy you’re needs.
