I just can’t say enough great things about this place. What a gem. The chips and salsa, table side guac, and queso are out of this world. Ordered the steak and chicken fajitas to split with a friend and they were nothing short of incredible. The place was pretty empty on a Thursday, which seemed surprising, considering how good the food was. The fact that it is BYOB made this place even better. We had our book club here and shared a lot of wine, food, and conversation. Would definitely come back again and recommend it to others.

Food was beyond tasty. I gave the place a 4 out of 5 because of the wait stuff. Otherwise yummy. Highly recommend

This place is bizarre. It stands out from other restaurants in Southwest, but not for any good reasons. The music was really bad pop, which was probably the most striking thing. it was the sound of bad Christian rock, solamente en español. The décor was hokey and outdated. The food was safe. in that you probably won’t be disappointed. but it didn’t have any spice or significant flavor(and no bottles on the table to bring it up to the level of heat you might want at a Mexican place). The only thing that saved it was that the food wasn’t as terrible as everything else; however, you can get a better plate at half the price anywhere nearby. For two people, the total came to about $ 25(just drinking water). I don’t know what these folks were going for, but it wasn’t good. A strange modern Mexican-American fusion maybe? Won’t be back.

We really enjoyed our meal here. I had the ribeye with the poblano cream sauce. It was fantastic! Perfectly cooked, and the cream sauce had a amazing flavor without over powering the steak. Others at my table had the fajitas, and we shared the table side guacamole. Everyone enjoyed their meals and said they’d definitely come back. The menu prices were a little higher than expected, and were not right on or other places I found on the Internet. The Ribeye was $ 25 I believe. I just found some of the menu here on Unilocal buried down in the pictures. Also I missed that it was BYOB, but there is s liquor store across the street if needed.

Addictive Eclectic Ribeye with Poblano Pepper La Crema Sauce, MONEY As a major Foodie being raised in SW Detroit and a regular visitor to my old stomping grounds to support the hard working family owned eateries, I have to say this has to be the Very Best New eating spot for decades in all of Mexican Town. Little known the area is kinda split between the Clark Park area and Springwells Village section which is just a couple exits away at Springwells off I-75 only 10 minutes from the heart of downtown Detroit. The area most missed by the suburbian’s which think Mexican Town is only on Bagley have been missing dozens of unique non tourist trap real deal Mexican eating spots, that guess what the Mexican’s in the Barrio eat at. Ah Ha so now you know the real deal. In reality many of the long time decades old Mexican Town eateries are only plating up Gringo style meals that why you only see the folks from the suburbs visiting thinking this is the finest offered, NOT you must venture out folks to explore all of what Southwest Detroit has to offer. Please continue reading for a interesting Foodie venture you must try soon. A executive Chef Luis Garza who spent years working for Andiamo’s now brings gourmet Steaks along with unique Mexican crafted meals to the area. For now we’ll call it a hidden gem that you must try for those looking for a fine dining experience not found in other parts of SW Detroit. We had the most amazing meal and service Thanks Ana our waitress and the table side made Guacamole in the Stone ground dish. After reading the reviews just had to try the Rib eye smothered with Poblano Pepper La Crema Sauce, believe me a Steak like no other that warmed our belly also the Mole Gallina which I know as Chicken Mole where the sauce is the boss and Yes the very best I’ve had around town as most use it from a jar, this is house made with that special Chocolate only found in Mexico. A large selection of Steaks, Seafood and Mexican specialties can be found on the menu that are many of the elaborate dishes we’ll be trying soon, next will be the Aged Sirloin with Guajillo, Ancho and Chipotle Butter Cream Sauce along with the traditional Stuffed Poblano Peppers I’m so enlightened by. Also we tried a couple old school Tacos, Chorizo and Asada both off the chart great, I notice a few different Fish Taco’s I’ll try next time for a super treat I’m sure. A very nice pleasant clean eating area with get this white table cloths, yep I made one hell of a mess Ha Ha. This place is # 2 on Zomato for the most talked about eating spots out of 1100 restaurants, so now what does that tell you. Stop by say Hello to Chef Luis, brother Hemero and MaMa Maria for a most delightful dining experience. Oh Yea please LIKE them on Facebook too. ENJOY find on Instagram also.

A friend had been raving about this place and their table side guacamole, so when I saw a groupon for it I decided to give it a shot. First off, the place is very casual, maybe even a bit divey in appearance. You can bring your own alcohol though, which I thought was nice. They start you off with chips and salsa. The salsa has a pleasant kick to it and good flavor, and the chips are a bit thicker but have good flavor. We ordered the guacamole to start with and I liked that they asked how spicy we wanted it. It tasted fresh and well seasoned, but as a personal preference I feel like it should have had a bit more lime. We ended up running out of chips, but they brought us some more out without a fuss. We decided to split the chicken Chiles Rellenos with veggies and red rice as our sides. The pepper was packed full of chicken and the outside had a beautiful thin layer of fried goodness topped with a flavorful red sauce and queso fresco. The veggie side was crispy green beans with a flavorful salsa type sauce, and the rice was perfectly cooked. I was really happy with our food, but the main reason this place gets 4 stars is because the service has a lot of room for improvement. The waitress wasn’t very attentive for how few people there were.

Hands down, El Asador is the best authentic Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to. My favorite dish all of time is the Enchiladas Verdes. I could eat these daily, I actually did at one point :) I went here for a wine pairing dinner that they had with Motor City Wine and sampled some of the most amazing food, not specifically on their menu, but with variations of ingredients that they use and I HAD to post the photos because every single item I had was phenomenal. I want to go back here so badly and chow down. I 100% recommend.

Having grown up in the area, when I crave Mexican food, and am near this side of town, I usually go to Mexican Village(my whole life). Today, based upon reviews, as I headed back to the office between appointments I decided to stop at El Asador. Well, I certainly do not regret the decision. Was the lunch a couple of dollars more? Yes. Was it more than worth it? Yes! The service was attentive, and quick. I ordered the chicken enchilada Verde. What set this place apart? Taste, flavor, & presentation. The code came out hit and nicely seasoned. The salsa was fresh and flavorful. The meal came on a large platter and consisted of a small salad with vinaigrette,(which I completely appreciated), the frijoles were not the standard dark kidney bean, but a pale pink, and the rice(which was a bit soft), contained peas and carrots. The flavor of each item truly sets El Asador apart from any other competitors. The enchilada verde even had nice touch of a couple of potato nuggets on top along with the authentic Mexican queso fresco cheese. The Verde sauce was amazingly flavorful. By the way, you have the choice of 2 dudes: rice, beans, vegetables, or potatoes. What? Unheard of! I felt like I was eating at one of my friends homes growing up! Can’t wait to try it for dinner with the family.

Food is great and prices are high but you get what you pay for. I will be back, it’s authentic. The guacamole was all show and nothing special for 10 bucks. Wife loved her shrimp covered in cheese and lobster sauce. I got the Seafood bowl with all the goodness the ocean has to offer. The pablano soup is a must try and I even took a large soup home. I love this place and can’t wait to go back, wife got us a Groupon for our next trip.

Having been raised on authentic Mexican food, it’s hard to find a place worthy of challenging your mom or grandma’s cuisine. Truth! I however, am so in love with the food here. I recommend the Poblano soup, a fresh bowl of Guacamole(made on the spot in front of you), and Scallop tacos or Cazuela de Mariscos. Cooked perfectly, fresh, and flavorfull. The physical setting is a bit small, preferably for an intimate dinner as opposed to a dinner with the boys. The parking is often times a bit tight as well, but it is well worth it!

a small and delicious mexican restaurant. the table side guacamole was really the highlight of the meal. nothing beats fresh avocados smashed with cilantro right before your eyes. and the serving was massive, served in a huge mortar bowl, with fresh fried tortilas. our dinners were also of a higher standard than most mexican restaurants. my steak was pounded thin and breaded and came with freshly sauteed onions and peppers. everything about is was fresh. even the beans and rice, which usually are a throw away were flavorful. when i tried to order a beer the waitress told me they didn’t serve alcohol but she stated that they are byob, so that made me want to come back even more. love, juston

I come here at least once or twice a month for lunch. Best tasting fish soup I’ve ever had. Soup has shrimp, scallops, salmon, tilapia, whitefish, squid, and a crab claw. Service is slightly slow cuz they only have one cook, but well worth the wait. The most authentic Mexican food I’ve tasted since visiting the Bronx.

If you love to find a little place with amazing food take a trip to Springwells road in Detroit. Its a bit south of Mexican village. But its worth the adventure. The place is very basic but the food is first class. This is really a steak house with a Mexican flavor with Italian traces. The seafood is Pacific style too. But the chef knows how to balance flavors. A little deep fried pepper in the salad. A potato and Mexican sausage starter and a steak rolled with spinach and hollandaise sauce. The place is 2 star but the food is 5 star!

Tacos were ok. I really enjoyed the tortilla soup. That was the hit. Next time, I would recommend the table side guac. They roll a cart to your table, grind it up with a mortar and pestle, and serve it right there. You should walk around and check out the local street art nearby too.

Not your typical Mexican restaurant. It’s on the outskirts of the Mexican Town area, has some of the traditional fare us non-Mexicans expect in a Mexican restaurant, but is oh, so much more. Atmosphere/building: very casual, clean and nice. No big expense on making this place hip, but rather well maintained and just a neighborhood place. Dress casual. Service: just ok. Actually a bit less than ok. Friendly and nice, but slow. Too slow. But that may also make it authentic. Don’t come here if in a hurry. Food: great food, cooked right, with a non-traditional flare. Filet cooked perfectly, with a spicy au jus. Table side guacamole made to perfection. Even properly cooked seafood. And cheap! It’s byob, so that really helps on the bill too. This food should be in an upscale trendy joint in NYC at 4 times the price. So come and get it before they upgrade the location and start charging the going rate.

We decided to try this place after seeing the great reviews on Unilocal.Upon entering the restaurant we were immediately greeted by Carlos who also happened to be our server for the evening, he was very kind. The restaurant is not very big maybe 15 or so tables so it’s more intimate but that’s ok. There is artwork on the walls for sale, the photos were beautiful but a tad pricey. As soon as we were seated Carlos brought fresh chips and salsa to the table. The salsa was ok a little too spicy but it had good flavor. We ordered the guacamole which is prepared fresh at the table to your liking it was AMAZING. Do not come here and not get guacamole you’ll regret it lol. We also ordered the tortilla soup as an appetizer. Which was a different variation than what I’m use to, but still quite tasty. It had a creamy tomato base topped with fresh cilantro, fried tortilla strips, cheese and diced avocado. For our entrée we decided on the fish tacos(mahi mahi) grilled. I’m not even exaggerating when I say this but these were by far the best fish tacos I’ve had in a long time. They were seasoned and cooked perfectly and served in a flour tortilla. Overall this place is great, from the service to the food. We will definitely be returning in the future!

My husband and I had a wonderful meal at El Asador. Upon parking, we wondered if we had the right place. The simple sign on the building is no indicator whatsoever of what awaits you inside. Upon entering, a waitress asked me if we had a reservation… I kind of giggled. What place in the hood requires reservations?! Apparently this one. Without a reservation, you may be offered the«bitch» table by the kitchen door, so maybe call ahead when you plan on visiting. The prices are a little higher than I expected considering the location. Entrees run anywhere from $ 15 – 30, but rest assured, they’re completely worth it. Not listed on the menu is the fact that all entrees come with your choice of soup or salad, plus two sides… but the sides are negligible, to be frank. The rice, beans and potato wedges we tried were all«just okay». The standouts are the soups and entrees themselves. Both soups we tried were well-made and balanced. My favorite was the creamy tortilla, but the chicken consumme was good, too. I ordered the ribeye(medium rare), because Neil Y’s review said I HAD to. My husband went for the grilled mahi-mahi tacos. Our soups were served not long after ordering, and our entrees were delivered shortly after. That was probably the second-best steak I’ve ever had in my life. It was cooked perfectly and was ridiculously tender. The creamy poblano pepper sauce on top was killer without being too spicy. Jacob’s tacos were also a hit; he only regretted that he didn’t have more room to finish the third taco. Portions were large, service was good and the bill was reasonable(especially considering how good everything was). This place is the definition of «diamond in the rough». You owe it to yourself to make a reservation and visit El Asador. **There is NOBAR but you are more than welcome to bring your own beer and wine.***

Like many reviewers before me mentioned, this is a hidden gem in SW Detroit that provided one of the best meals I’ve had in a really long time. It was my first BYOB so I felt a little guilty walking in with our beers at first… then slightly rebellious as there were a couple of ‘Detroit’s finest’(DPD) eating an early dinner there but our waitress eased our apprehension. I had the Camerones en Salsa de Langosta which are lightly breaded giant prawns stuffed with cheese in a lobster cream sauce with poblano peppers. I am not normally a seafood dish kind of girl, but fellow Unilocalers convinced me otherwise. The shrimp were giant and delicious but this lobster sauce… man, this lobster sauce was sooo good. So rich, but so good. Between the chips & salsa starter, creamy tortilla soup, I really didn’t have a whole lot of room to eat but half of the entrée(even though I wanted more!). I took the leftovers home(again, not something I’d normally do with seafood) and they even reheated well the next day — bonus! I also had the pleasure of trying a bite of the melts-in-your-mouth fillet mignon with 3 chile butter which was knock your socks off amazing. The prices are insanely good for the quality of food and attentive service you receive here. I can’t believe I even found a Groupon ahead of our visit to make the cost even more reasonable. With or without a Groupon, we will be back. I highly recommend dining here — even if you’re not familiar with SW Detroit.

A hidden gem in Southwest Detroit, I would frequent this place every week if I could. The soups are delicious, and the guacamole is made table side with a mortar & pestle, so you know it’s fresh. The highlight are the entrees: I tried the Camarones en salsa de langosta for a steal at $ 15.99 (Breaded shrimp stuffed with cheese and topped with a lobster cream sauce). It was incredibly creamy, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Friends have raved about their dishes as well. Would 100% return, because this place deserves more 5 star reviews. In the Mexican part of town, they are my #1 choice.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I am a believer. We found this place by accident. I am so grateful we did. It is a Mexican steakhouse that’s BYOB. That’s amazing in itself. The gauc. was prepared right at the table. It was the best I’ve ever had in Michigan. The fish tacos were good and the vegan enchiladas were just the right amount of spice. The prices were pretty good. I will definitely return with my bottle of choice.
