The Detroit City Airport (DET) used to be the main airport for the city back in the 40’s. Then the airlines moved to Willow Run Airport (YIP) out in Ypsilanti, Mi. That was too far away so Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) became and still is the main airport for the area. It is out in Romulus, MI.
Some think that DET airport is small but in reality it is similar to the Bob Hope Airport (BUR) In Burban, CA. It has the same runway layout. The Galaxy C-​5A has landed many times at BUR so it could also land here at DET.
The DET is conveniently located only 6 – 7 miles from downtown Detroit. From a pilots viewpoint this airport is very conveniently located.

it’s a city airport, what can I say? It’s small, not too much going on here. I was here to rent a car and it was quiet. The surrounding neighborhood is really not great, so if you happen to fly in here you really should get a cab or rent a car and stay someplace else. No wi-​fi, dirty bathrooms.

Not too much there and a really quiet sleepy airport. They do have a nice big runway and they have an old terminal that is now pretty much out of use.
