This place isn’t far from Cobo hall and when I walked in I smelled the food and instantly got hungry, we sat down and the waitress brought us water then we ordered beers but in the process of ordering a beer she sounded and looked confused when she was telling what types of beers she had like she was new or something so then they didn’t have the beer I wanted so I ordered something else, surprisingly they still had it, we then ordered food I had gotten the Anchor burger with ground beef, Kraut, pepper jack cheese and steak friens, not a bad deal for $ 7. We had to remind the waitress that it was to be medium rare, after the food got here the burgers did not have Kraut so we asked for some Kraut on the side then we had to asked for napkins ask for silverware, just had to keep asking for items, the Bun was soggy on both sides, the burger itself wasn’t bad for a Bar but it was your standard«Bar Burger», nothing special. We waited for awhile to get our Kraut and it was sitting on cooks bench for over 5 mins til the waitress brought it over to us. The bathroom was tagged up in graffiti, mirrors broken and had quite a raunchy smell inside. Not the place u want to go to for a Burger and a beer

Stopped by Anchor Bar for a quick bite to eat and a beer before a Red Wings game. Anchor Bar has the basic bar food. I got a Grilled Cheese with Bacon and fries. Also, my group split a few pitchers of Labatt’s before the game. The food is just enough to fill you up and give yourself a base before consumption of mass quantities of beer. Purpose served. The main draw for us to Anchor Bar was the free shuttle to the Red Wings game.(You can take your beer on the bus too!) Shuttle runs every 15 – 30 minutes depending on game-day traffic.

Stopped in for lunch after purchasing a Groupon in an effort to try out different restaurants downtown. Service was good, food was ok. Had a bacon cheeseburger and steak fries. Might return for drinks but not food.

I have mixed feelings about Anchor Bar… — Drink prices are reasonable & the shots are poured generously. — The«kitchen» is small & basic, just don’t expect much. — The(current) staff is a mix of attitude and/or inexperience.

The owner of this bar is one of the rudest and pompous men I have ever met. My fiancée and I were sitting at a booth waiting for our two other friends to arrive as they were stuck in traffic. We had been ordering drinks while waiting for them. After 10 minutes, the owner came up and said that he was going to kick us out of our table and that we would have to leave because our friends weren’t there yet and this was«a four person booth». We tried to explain that they were on their way and that we were continuing to drink and order food. He told us he didn’t care and he was the owner and«makes the damn rules.» We will absolutely not return and I would take your business elsewhere as well.

I usually look for the local bars when I’m in town for the night. I walked into Anchor Bar at 11pm and was greeted by the poorly lit and depressing atmosphere of the place. One of the keg coolers was broken so four of their draft beers were unavailable. The bathroom was filthy. The bartender was somewhat attentive but impersonal toward me. All this would have been OK but I felt like the outsider in the local bar. Across the street at Tommy’s, I was treated like family.

A cool place to get cheap drinks, play pool, and get some good bar food. They also have an awesome jukebox! My friend ordered the chicken fingers and tatchos. Both were delicious! I would come back here just to be eat the chicken fingers.

If by anchor you mean something holding it back from going further, than I know exactly what the anchor was. Anchor bar was a nice place that I ventured into after a Tigers game. Everything was great, except for shady patrons. Upon entering the place there’s a group of idiots in the hallway that leads into the place. They seem like tourists who were lost. They start walking and don’t even pay attention. Practically walk right into us. Whatever, it happens. When we get in we see there are some pool tables and nice looking bar. My friend grabs the first round while I set up the pool table. Their tables are good, and make for a fun time. I went to the bar to get the next round, and I once again encountered some less than friendly people. Two guys who seemed like regulars. One of which got up and went to the bathroom, and I went by his seat to order some beers. His friend felt he needed to let me know that someone was sitting there. I assured him I knew, and that all I wanted was to order a round of beer. I get my change and when a fiver falls on the floor, I got to get it. His friend comes back and asks if he can sit back down. DUDE, does it seem like I want your seat? Let it go, went back to playing pool and enjoyed ourselves very much. The beer is super inexpensive here, and a great deal. Swing on through, just avoid some of the morons that might be inside.

It’s a steady three and a half star but it gets 4 stars just because if you want a bar burger at 150 at night will still be open and cook it that makes it a home run to me decent selection and normally a good crowd for games service has always been good

I really wanted to try this place. It’s just a shame that we came in at such in inopportune moment. There was no one there but us and a few others, but no one came to serve us, so after 10 minutes we walked out. Perhaps it’s the Anchor Bar because all the servers have Anchors attached to their feet.

Great low key spot with sports photos all over the walls. Serves drinks and bar food(I did not partake) until 2am. The beer selection is good and cold and the juke box is full of fun tunes. 2 pool tables, golden tee and tvs make for a fun spot. Was walking distance from the double tree.

Simple dirty bar. The burgers are cheap and taste like it however it is exactly what you expect from a dive bar. I have been to better dive bars with better food however it was decent. The juke box has some good tunes to choose from. The liquor selection is pretty good they have 2 james which is a favorite of mine. The beer selection is pretty average your basic trash can beer. Would be fun if I was a bit more intoxicated.

Anchor Bar was my first bar of the Detroit Weekend. I needed some lunch after my flight and needed to kill some time till I could meet my friend at work. Anchor serves a fine burger and makes an even better drink. It is a little bit divey, which, if you read my reviews, you know I love. The wait staff did a great job checking on me and keeping my drink filled and didn’t mind at all that I lugged my suitcase into the joint. I would certainly drink there again!

Cheap drinks, decent bar food, and a dark atmosphere that straddles between both divey fun and, in a weird way, a little romantic. Anchor Bar has been around forever and was long known as a hang out for Free Press journalists and other members of local press. These days you’ll find a whole lot of service industry folks, especially late at night after they’ve gotten off their own shifts. Also a lot of Red Wings fans, as it’s just a couple blocks away from Joe Louis. There’s darts, pool, and various video games to keep you entertained. The menu is standard bar fare, nothing that really pops out as amazing but nothing that you can really go wrong with either. It has an old, dark wood interior that I love, and makes me imagine what it must have been like to hang out in there 30 years ago. Overall it’s a solid spot on game day, with a group of friends, or when you need a stiff drink to forget the day.

Awesome spot. I was in town for a conference, and some buddies and I checked out Anchor Bar to watch a hockey game in. The interior is pretty awesome: a dark, old-school, wood-paneled sports bar. It’s the kind of bar that is going out of style in a lot of places, which is too bad. Anyway, the beer was free-flowing, the food was good bar food, and the waitstaff was very personable. If I lived in Detroit, I’d definitely come back!

This is a sports bar. You come here to drink and watch hockey/baseball/football(sorry the Pistons suck now), and generally not eat food and dine in. I like the atmosphere. It’s grungy and dirty. It reminds me of college with those bathroom stalls that barely shut and the smell of fresh urine. BUT they have an awesome selection of beers on both draft and in bottle form and everything is ridiculously CHEAP. And did I mention how much they love the Wings here? Look at all of those photos I inserted! And of I think what are Detroit Free Press writers above the bar. Neato! Most importantly, I discovered my love for Short’s Brewing Company. ITISEVERYTHING. Why have I not tried this before?! I asked for a brown ale that tastes good and the bartender lady from the gods hands me over this delicious nectar. Their Huma Lupa IPA wasn’t too shabby either. I’m even moreso intrigued what their seasonal and limited edition ales taste like. You can’t get this on the East Coast. So this is like a party in my mouth for me. Wait for it, they have a Key Lime mother F**king beer. Peaches & Cream, Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Stout, Black cherry, bananas and BLOW cream?! Where the hell have I been and then there are normal beers with insanely creative names. But I need to stop talking about Short’s because I’m sure Anchor Bar doesn’t have every single flavor of the rainbow on demand but still a pretty damn fine selection. My life has been forever changed. They’re also super friendly and they love the Red Wings. What more could you ask for? Well, my friend’s car got broken into. Maybe we shouldn’t have made this our last stop at like 1am. But anyway, the staff and her boyfriend helped us tape her window back together again so that it was at least drivable and saved the day, as opposed to the Detroit Police that never came.
