The membership is not cheap but it’s never crowded, there’s always a treadmill or two open and it’s not pretentious. The classes are great as well! I highly recommend this gym

I really like this Y — forewarning — the membership’s not that cheap… but when you consider all the classes that you would potentially pay extra for elsewhere, it’s a good deal. I really utilize the classes — the instructors are charismatic, enthusiastic and skilled in their fields. The classes are challenging enough to be a great workout, but easily modified for beginners as well. I like the Pilates(with Mary), Zumba(with Eva) and Spin(with Herb). There’s also plenty of treadmills, open gym times to shoot hoops, and weights, not to mention a huge pool. The Childcare is only $ 2.00 for any non-member child to play for two hours — dirt cheap and the workers are super sweet. Also, no need to feel self-conscious — you will see people in great shape, and people getting in shape, young and old, men and women doing everything. No intimidation or judgment… This facility is clean and spacious with something for everyone. I enjoy being a member and highly recommend! :)

The previous user’s review of this YMCA is, in my opinion, somewhat off-base. I worked out at the Walnut Creek YMCA for about six months when I lived in Des Moines, after previously having been a member at Aspen Athletic in West Glen, and at Ames Raquet and Fitness before that. The Walnut Creek YMCA is still my favorite gym in Des Moines. The staff is friendly; it’s big, clean, never too crowded, unpretentious and has all the modern amenities of any other gym in the area. In 2009 I moved to New York City where I have belonged to Equinox Fitness Clubs and New York Sports Club. I still don’t think that any of these higher priced clubs are any better than Walnut Creek YMCA. As a member of the YMCA you get the same conveniences of a name brand club, at a fraction of the cost. It’s Des Moines’ best kept secret, in my opinion. Added bonus: they let me work out for free on my last visit to Des Moines. Ditch your spendy gym membership now and join the YMCA!

As a YMCA member for over 6 years I have been to several across the country in my travels. This one is average at best. Several of the treadmills skip a bit, some of the cardio equipment is obsolete, and many of the televisions on the equipment never seam to work. The facilities are never really clean. They have a steam room, but it is clear they do not clean it every night as the BO is pretty bad. As far as a gym thought it’s not all that bad. I never have to wait for equipment, it’s not overly crowded, and the staff is very nice. They have a good assortment of classes for adults and children as well.
