These guys are great at what they do. I brought my ’65 Beetle here immediately after purchasing it and had them completely rebuild the motor and transmission.
Any time I have questions, they have answers. Any time I want to learn something new about my car, they teach me. This team of professionals never ceases to amaze me with their knowledge and the genuine advice that they continue to hand out when asked.
I’ve never been so satisfied with a car and it’s performance. I’ve brought the bug back here to routinely maintain it and to make small adjustments and improvements — and will continue to do so for many years to come. I absolutely highly recommend coming here to anyone who has a vintage Volkswagen — I won’t take my car anywhere else.

I used Painters Grinding for my old VW’s for over 20 years and began having problems with them a few years ago, but last month was the last time I will ever go there again. I went to Painters last month because the brake pads on my 1984 Westfalia (101K original miles) needed to be replaced. Sean said my rotors were fine and suggested the more expensive German brake pads. I ask him to go ahead and replace the pads. When I came to pick up the vehicle I approached it and noticed the door had been left unlocked and the door was ajar. I looked inside and could see that the vehicle had been broken into and camping equipment was stolen. I asked the guys at Painters about it (starting with Sean and then some of the other guys) and they said I was lucky and if they had locked the doors the break in would have resulted in a broken window. I can’t say I was happy with their excuse, but what could I do? When I drove the vehicle off the lot the brakes squeaked like nothing I had ever heard before. It was so loud that people in other cars and on the streets were staring at me. I drove the camper for about 100 miles before I couldn’t stand it anymore and took the vehicle back to Painters. They told me that to solve the problem I needed new pads and new rotors. WHAT!!! Note, they told me the rotors were fine when I brought it in the first time. I was not happy that the mechanic who just charged me $ 200 for new brake pads wanted another $ 400 for another set of new pads and also rotors. I asked if they could credit me for the first set of pads they installed, but they wouldn’t work with me. I decided to go somewhere else to have the vehicle looked at. I had heard of Blazer Automotive for many years, but never took my VW’s to them. They are old VW guys who know what they are doing. Larry Blazer looked at the brakes and determined that the rotors were indeed fine, but said that the pads Painters installed were the wrong ones. He replaced the pads with softer ones that didn’t squeak at all and charged me $ 150 total for parts and labor. Now the camper brakes perfectly and doesn’t make any noise. I took the pads that Painters put on there back to them and asked them for a refund on the parts and labor since they misdiagnosed the vehichle. They gave me 50% of what I paid for the parts themselves, only $ 30.
If you have an old VW and needs more than just parts, do yourself a favor and never go to Painters Grinding again. Instead, go to Blazer Automotive. They are old timers that have been in the business just as long and are honest and will take good care of you.

These guys know old VWs like no one else! Friendly and honest staff give you straight forward advice and do excellent repair and rebuild work. Have done me right with ’71 Fasty, ’76 Super and an older Beetle. Sean, Eddie, the whole crew, always right on– they will tell you anything you wanna know and save you tons of time and money. I go nowhere else.

Great shop, great guys and great work. This is the place to go for your air cooled needs. We’ve got two vintage air cooled Beetles and Painter’s has been a huge part of the rebuild process.

I was referred to Painters from a friend who is a VW enthusiast. My project coordinator was Shawn. The project was a 1971 Bus. It was a multi-​system project that literally took months to locate obscure parts… but that’s what we wanted. We wanted them to work on it slowly, so we could spread the expense over time, and we didn’t need the bus for transportation. They we’re considerate in updating us, and accepting our partial payments as it progressed.
After many months, they worked magic! We can now putt-​putt around Denver in our bus. We found them quite fair, reasonable, and helpful. Thanks Shawn and Painters for hanging in there!
