The posted hours are 8 – 12 Mon-Sat and 8 – 11 on Sun. My husband & I decided to try it this morning at 830. The lights were off but the front door was open so we walked in. A lady came from the kitchen and tild us she was closed making cakes. My husband asked her when she would be open and she just walked away. It’s obvious they don’t need business.

I really think this place could have a lot of potential. They just need to put a little more effort in selling fresh pastries. I’m from Glendale, Ca, and in Glendale they are known for a large community of Armenian bakeries. When I heard there was an Armenian bakery near me I immediately rushed over to have my fix. I was very disappointed. The fruit on the baked goods were old. The pastries were stale. It tasted as if it was left out for a week. The cream on top of the pastries was not even creamy. If anyone has ever eaten a cupcake while it sat out for 3 or 4 days… that is what it tasted like! In addition… they are way overpriced. For a fruit tart, some kind of mango moose and some other pastry it was about $ 13.

I’ve been ordering cakes from California Bakery for a few years now and hopefully will keep doing it for a long, long time. They are tasty, creative and ooooohhhh! so good! Last weekend we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and the 2-tier cake was decorated with silver balls and silver sugar roses. I didn’t want to cut it! The owner is always coming up with great ideas for flavors and decorations. You can always depend on her taste.

Nestled in the district known as Denver’s Little Russia(a few doors down from the popular party venue National Restaurant), the cozy California Bakery offers much more than its name might suggest. Yes, you will most definitely find an array of scrummy baked goods. Some reflect the owners’ Armenian/Georgian origins, such as the oozy, cheesy wonder that is the Khachapuri. Others indicate the Russian influence on the Caucasus region, like the fried, lamb-packed goodies known as Pirozhki. And if you’re looking to buy the savory flatbreads known as Lahmajun in bulk, look no further. However, California Bakery offers some more filling meal choices as well. For example, on my most recent visit, I devoured a Tarna wrap. Thinly-sliced meat marries perfectly with crunchy salad fixings, pliant flatbread and a zesty, garlicky yogurt sauce to create something akin to a Greek gyro or Turkish döner kebap. Washed down with a plain yogurt drink(Tahn) from the cooler, I left feeling immensely satiated. Please note that there are only a few tables within — most of California Bakery’s business is takeout in nature. Nevertheless, it is well worth a visit, or two or three! And afterwards, why not go across Leetsdale Drive, to the Eritrean-owned grocery called Marhaba, and check out their East African, Middle Eastern and Eastern European items?
