To me, HMS is the best of both worlds: Not only does it carry the inventory of an art store you’d find in Dallas, it’s also a local, family-owned and operated business. So you can shop local(and hyperlocal, if you take classes next door at UNT) and have a well-stocked arsenal for your war against bad art. Creative institutions like these are getting harder to come by in Denton town due to the double-dip recession. And we all know how Fry Street real estate has been gobbled up by franchises. But like the sturdy British maritime vessels the title brings to mind, it has weathered the economic storms well — at least, it has since I was an art student in the late ‘90s. Advice: Try to shop after or before peak class hours, or you’ll end up waiting behind a line of art students. And don’t freak at the prices: The money you’ll save not idling your engine on the Lewisville Lake bridge is well worth the markup. God save the queen.

I like HMS, and I am forced to use it because it has certain products that the other art stores around don’t have. Though multiple times I have gone and they are closed when they say they should be open. I have also gone in to buy watercolor paper off the roll and no one is in the store at all to assist me. They have the art supplies you want for a vastly overpriced cost in comparison to other places, but good luck catching them while they are open.
