I went to this wine store for the first time based on the wines listed on their website and on wine searcher. None of the several wines that I was looking for(and that were listed on both websites) were available. They hasn’t just run out, based on what I was told. Instead, they list wines that are«representative» of what they might actually have in stock. I am tempted to give only one star but will add a star because their very meager selection(the shelves of the very small store were not full) include some wines that, although easier to find, are good wines. I understand running out of wines and inventories that are not up to the minute, but this didn’t seem to be close to accurate.

Despite the name, this is a great place to go for craft beer, as well. In fact, this review is entirely based on the beer selection, because I am not much of a wine drinker, while I have bought beer from them often. I should start by saying that this store, size-wise is very small. With larger stores much closer to me(BevMo, Fairway) I would still rather purchase beer here almost any day of the week over the other larger locations, for two reasons. The first is selection: if you don’thave a lot of space, the selection is key. If you’re going to sell craft beer well, you have to provide a wide range of options, and most of them have to be good! This is very much the case at Nicholas Roberts. The beers are definitely slanted towards American craft beers, with a few Belgian and UK options, but there is always something good to try. Local, regional, national, and a few imports are all represented on just a few shelves, and I am usually excited but what I can find: Horse River, Old Engine Oil, Cisco, Founders, etc. If you are like me, and you are constantly hung up at the bottle shop because of an overwhelming number of choicse, this N.R. has the solution: an excellent selection, in a very limited space. The other reason I keep coming back is the mixed sixpack, a venerable institution, largely neglected, or at least inappropriately implemented at other venues. N.R. does the mixed six justice, allowing nearly all of their beers to be included, and at a reasonable price. If I had a gripe, my one gripe would be that they don’t have a lot of large bottles, mostly 12 oz’ers.

Two very powerful words: CUSTOMERSERVICE. Peter & his team know their wines and drink EVERYTHING that is stocked on the shelves, and accordingly give very good advice to customers. While this store isn’t the largest, it does stock an impressive selection and most of the wines won’t be familiar to the average wine drinker. They have a lot of bottles below $ 20 that can blow you away for the value, and then of course they know the higher-end range very well too. I’m pretty sure Fridays are still free tastings at 5:00PM, so that’s a good way to stop in and try new wines. They also have a monthly wine club that you can join as well, which is a great way to sample many different wines that have been selected. Stop by, don’t be intimidated by the lack of hiding places in this store(no way to say«I’m just looking, thanks!»), and tell them what you’re looking for. I’ll bet they give you a great recommendation and you’ll be happy with the experience.
