This is one of the most disgusting, amoral, vile companies I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. If you have a choice between doing business with Dave Hanly, Inc and taking a bullet to the eyeball, may I suggest you learn to read with one eye. I began working as an assistant to a completely blind man around a year ago in December. He had recently been taken advantage of by a previous caretaker who stole tens of thousands of dollars from him, and this had put him in a very difficult financial situation from which he has yet to fully recover even a year later. He was part of an oil co-op and had made a payment arrangement with Dave Hanley, Inc to pay around $ 400 a month regardless of the cost of his oil through the winter season, and to then pay off the balance at the end. When all was said and done he had a balance of around $ 1000. Still struggling financially he had the intention of applying for assistance at a variety of places that help people in need with utility payments. On his behalf I instructed Hanley to send a paper statement of the total balance and to NOT continue billing the credit card they had on file. The beginning of the next month they went ahead and took another $ 400 off of the card. This put his bank account into the negative and caused a chain reaction of overdraft fees. I attempted to contact Hanly by both phone(their answering service took the message) and email, and they ignored me. I had no choice but to file a complaint with the bank for a fraudulent charge. I also sent Hanly a very stern letter letting them know what had happened and instructing them to absolutely NOT process any more charges to the card on file. The next month, they did it again: another $ 400 charge. When I finally got to speak to a human being who actually worked for Hanly as opposed to an answering service she claimed to have no knowledge of the instruction not to charge the card, and finally took it off file. In the end Hanly tooK $ 800 which could(and likely would) have been paid on his behalf by a charity designed for just such purposes, and around $ 200 in overdraft fees were charged because of the situation, something the bank never resolved. Now it’s many months later and Hanly has been incessantly calling his house demanding payment on the small remaining balance. They have shown absolutely NO remorse for their actions and have taken a holier-than-thou approach to the situation, as if they should be bowed down to for having set up a budget billing plan in the first place. The secretary I have had to speak to repeatedly is such a foul person; there aren’t adequate words to describe her. Well. There are, but I’m a gentleman so I won’t use them. My last interaction with them was a few hours ago when I happened to be at his home when they called. I informed them that he was in no position to pay the remaining balance and that they could continue to call if they wanted to, but it wouldn’t change the situation. I was told we would be hearing from their lawyer. I welcome that. I welcome the law suit from the incredibly crass fraud committing oil company against the blind home-bound man. It should be a PR miracle for them. Truly.
