Loved it. I had the Flautas and they came 5 to an order at Lunch. So much food and great quality. The food came quickly as well which is a bonus at lunch. On the Dive scale — it’s clearly an upscale dive. Who doesn’t like an upscale dive? Absolutely going back to try the grilled chicken and the tortilla soup. And there is a full bar.

I tried this place based on Unilocal reviews and have to say I was pretty disappointed. Maybe I didn’t get the right thing? I got the three taco plate and the meat was super dry on all of them. I got beef, chicken and I think pork. My margarita was huge for $ 5 bucks! and enjoyable, but don’t expect a buzz lol. All and all I would go back but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Barbacoa tacos are the best. I also tried the pastor and bistec, but barbacoa is definitely the winner here. They have a mild-ish green salsa and very mild red salsa at their salsa bar. If you want heat though, go for the green salsa in the molcajete where they put your orders out at. That stuff is full of flavor and spice. Charro beans were rather bland and rice is a little mediocre as well. Just get tacos, you can’t lose.

i do not know how this place still exists. the food was mediocre. i ordered a fajita plate and it was just reheated and burned fajita. i also orderedbeef quesadillas and the cheese was not even melted. the beef inside tasted like boiled meat and hardly any meat. the two piece chicken tasted so bland and was very expensive at $ 7 for the plate. way too expensive for shitty food.

We got the #9 taco plates with chicken and one barbacoa. It comes with rice and beans. Everything tastes pretty good. The meats were tender and seasoned well. The taco shells were a little greasy. Also got a margarita that wasn’t very good. It was missing the little bit of sweet to accompany all that sour taste. I would go for the food but not the drink.

I wasn’t impressed. Tacos were greasy. Needed to get a key attached to a large wire ring to use the locked bathroom. I usually don’t mind dives. This one was a turn off. The barbacoa meat and bistec were delicious but the pastor and cochinita was dry and blah. The tortillas were greasy.

This place was delicious! I loved the chips and my fajita tacos were on point and not overly greasy! Salsa bar is bomb and we will be back for lunch!

For a taco joint this place is awesome! People that love Tacos y Mas or Fuel City Tacos need to come here, these tacos are GREAT! Tacos are a great price, good size and served very well. The molcajete sauce is amazing if you like spice, if you can’t handle spice don’t have it, they have other alternatives. At $ 1.35 a taco or $ 13 for 12tacos, the price is awesome for real Mexican flavor, not texmex flavor, MEXICAN! Try it, you won’t be disappointed. Next to try is their grilled Chicken, can’t wait.

Whatever you’re doing right now, stop. Proposing to your significant other? Hold up — your heart may belong to something else. Signing mortgage papers? You’re going to want to invest those dollars elsewhere. Delivering a baby? You tell that kiddo to wait. El Rey’s barbacoa is THE barbacoa of all barbacoas. You’re going to be a fool on your first visit. The amazing smells and options are going to temp you to order other items. Don’t worry, we made that mistake too. We ordered flautas, a quesadilla, and one barbacoa taco each. While all items were delicious, our tastebuds were outraged to be denied endless barbacoa. We brainstormed different paths that would lead to more as soon as humanly possible. «Is it time we tried pot? That gives people the munchies!» $ 5 margaritas, home-cooked authentic Mexican food, and the best barbacoa this taco fiend has ever experienced. So what are you waiting for?

Hands down best filling plates and tacos! Excellent customer service! Everyone is super nice and the atmosphere here is so upbeat and laid back we came back a second time and left feeling just as great as the first time. Please give this hidden gem a try! Got 4 tacos side of rice and two vampiro drinks all for under $ 20. All they need is a patio to along with this yummy drink and it would be beyond perfect. Will definitely tell a friend.

I wish I had a better review to offer, but when my dining companion and I walked in yesterday around 5, there wasn’t any chicken available. A place that has chicken as their main dish, and you don’t have any prepared. I was heartbroken.

Great spot! We ordered a chicken quesadilla and the four taco plate. I had to try the rice and beans as well and they did not disappoint. Everything was delicious. Their corn tortillas are amazing. I’ll be back again very soon! Almost forgot to mention the wide array of fantastic salsas(very fresh).

This is a divey Mexican food joint at its best. As others have said, the barbacoa is «move to Dallas» good and should be part of any visit. However, at $ 1.35 each, it doesn’t have to be a big part of your order — just order one of everything. The best part of your visit is that their POS system consists of the cashier writing your order on a big white dry erase board and then wiping it off when you get your order. The salsa bar provides some nice options to dress your tacos. Check this joint out — it will get your belly full without leaving your wallet empty.

For $ 20, you and your date can eat at the most authentic Mexican taqueria in the entire state of Texas. At El Rey, the meat is deliciously moist and melts in your mouth. Because the meat is *so* good, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Try something from their nice selection of authentic Mexican beer(Victoria!) with a smattering of tacos(barbacoa and cochinita are sooooooo good!) and you’ll be in heaven, if you like authentic taqueria style Mexican food. My husband and I joke that no matter what we order here, it’s always $ 20. Tacos and beer and chips? $ 20. Quesadilla and margaritas? $ 20. A single chip? $ 20?(I haven’t tried yet, but I just assume.) So grab $ 20, invite all your friends, and like Jesus with the loaves and fishes, you’ll feed them the best Mexican food around!

Great spot on the way to or from Dallas Love. One of the problems with hole-in-the-wall places is that, despite how good the food may be, they are dark and uninviting. This place breaks the mold; bright, recently renovated in urban chic, and, thanks to the bar, has a little bustle and life. The tacos are great. Pastor, bistec, barbacoa, and cochinita were all good, but I liked the barbacoa and cochinita the best. A moderate selection of salsa which are all freshly made. Lots of drink selections all ice cold. I’ll be back to try the chicken and some of the other varieties!

The specials sign caught my attention– A dozen tacos for $ 13.00. Perfect. We wanted a snacky meal that would be unique to the mostly Mexican neighborhood, authentic, and inexpensive. My sister was visiting from Brazil and craving Tex-Mex or Mexican food, so this was a good opportunity to satisfy all our preferences. I purchased 12 taco special so we got all four different varieties.— –Pastor –Bistec –Barbacoa –Cochinita All 4 were jucy and flavorful, but Barbacoa was my favorite, robust BBQ flavor. Every item seems to be made fresh in house including the 5 different complementary condiments –green veranda –warm smoked salsa –pickled onions –salsa –roasted jalapeño– were my favorite, I could eat them up like candy. And did. I got our order to go, so I will have to wait to review the lobby at a later time and date

Really great customer service. The food won’t blow your mind but it’s good Mexican food. The tortilla soup is clean, simple, wonderful. It’s comfort food! Great for a light filling meal, hangover, or a cold.(Quick tip: add the green creamy sauce.) Tacos and enchiladas are good, tostadas are really good. The drinks are a new thing so they’re cheap. $ 5 Margaritas are strong, but taste like lemonade so they hit you when you least expect it. $ 5 Vampiros are really good, too. I usually add a $ 3 shot of 1800 tequila, and I’m good to go.

Try the chicken enchiladas plate! AWESOME! I have eaten here several times(ordering something different each time) and it never disappoints. It’s a hidden gem among all the Mexican restaurants on this street and in Dallas!

Reliably good, recently remodeled, and reasonably priced. Very friendly counter service. The $ 2.50 mid-shelf tequila shots and hand-made, agave-sweetened margaritas with fresh-squeezed lime juice might partially explain the friendliness of the customers too. From the kitchen and grill come a focused selection of typical meat options… but there’s also the harder-to-find Yucatan specialty, cochinita pibil, on the menu everyday as well. If ordering a grilled chicken combo plate, ask for all thighs or legs for the best flavor and most moisture.

What a great way to start the weekend after such a long week. I really wanted to just have some breakfast tacos this morning instead of ordering, and since staying on maple — there are just so many great Mexican/street taco joints. The place may not look the greatest, nor the neighborhood but this place serves some delicious food! They’re currently in the process of remodeling, but they’re still open. Do not let the looks scare you away or turn you off! We ordered a total of 7 breakfast tacos, 3 potato, egg and cheese. 3 chorizo and egg, and also 1 bacon and egg. The set up is an open kitchen so you can see everything cooked freshly. The flour tortillas are lightly grilled giving it just the right amount of crunch and chew. The potatoes in the taco were cooked great, the bacon and chorizo were also spot on. They really load up on the tacos unlike some places that’ll skimp you! So you get your money’s worth and it’s all cooked perfect. The salsa bar is pretty standard– it included a regular red salsa, a green tomatillo salsa, and their roasted salsa. They also have fresh grilled jalapeños and onions. Nothing too fancy but it works just just right on the tacos. I’ll return to try out the carnitas and barbacoa too.
