On Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 I was driving west on Rte. 66. About ¼ mile before the Nutley Street exit, I came out from under an overpass and a large stone came down and hit me in the windshield directly in front of my face. At that point I decided to call 911 to save the next person from possible disaster. The 911 people patched me through to the Virginia State Police and that is when the trouble really started. The dispatcher who shall go unnamed and unnumbered was not at all helpful. Before I had a chance to say anything she informed me that I need to call my insurance not the VSP if I want a new windshield. I told her that I wasn’t calling to get my windshield replaced but that I wanted to prevent a highway death. She then said, «Well, you told me that a dump truck through up a stone.» I never said that! There was no dump truck in sight. At that point, I told her that workers like her were the reason that citizens don’t bother to call the police. She hung up on me. I called back and got patched through to the same person. She was still of no help so I asked for her badge number and name. Just ahead in Centreville I saw three cops giving speeding tickets. The moral of this story if you need a speeding ticket count on the Virginia State Police but if you need help or want to report a problem don’t waste your time.
