Great owner run deli and sandwich place in Cranford New Jersey. Been here a few times and their sandwiches are fabulous. I usually order their specialty Sloppy Joe’s; Hot Corned beef, Pastrami, ham, roast beef and turkey. Hot entrée platter specials. Very fast service. Popular; so can be busy. Serves breakfast but have not tried it. Coffee is ok but not exceptional. Try to always stop in when on town. Excellent table service or order at counter.

The sandwiches are the best! The joes or the wraps. Breakfast and lunch menu is great too. The place is clean and the owners are really nice. I highly recommend going there or ordering a platter to go. You won’t be disappointed.

What a great place, we go here for breakfast and lunch as well. Food is always fresh and appetizing, The service is fantastic, and friendly we always feel welcome here, we always look forward to going back again. Very clean and cheerful environment, my wife had great fried chicken, I love the omelets, and the french toast is great, and of course there famous sloppy joes sandwiches are very appetizing, it is our pleasure to always visit, and treat ourselves.

A platter of sandwiches was ordered from this deli about a week ago: roast beef, turkey, and chicken and red pepper. Pros: The roll ups were tasty and fresh, and the meat was plentiful. Cons: there was little to no dressing which made them quite dry. I also couldn’t help but feel frustrated that every single small roll up was wrapped up in plastic wrap. Although I can understand that this might help during prep/cutting and with overall presentation, it’s a LOT of wasted plastic and garbage. Also –1 for the delivery guy who straight up laughed and said, «never heard of that one!» when he was asked about allergy menus… really? That’s a strange response for someone working around food.

Good sandwich place. I’d have given them four stars, if the owner and staff were a bit friendlier. Fresh rye bread, good subs, sloppy joes — if you can find parking.

Yummy sandwiches that are huge and not too expensive. You can eat in or take out, and you will certainly leave full!

Great place for sandwiches. Clean place and fresh food. Their Dagwood sandwich is my favorite — turkey, coleslaw, swiss on rye. Messy and hits the spot. Writing this makes me want to go get one right now which is awkward because I just had ate. Lunch take two!

Hadn’t been here in a while, as i only seem to go to one or two places in Cranford for 90% of my meals. stopped by there this weekend, and wanted to relive my youth. Ordered a Turkey Joe… and as much as i enjoyed reliving my past… i understand why i cannot and will not eat that sandwich on a regular basis. The sandwich is three slices of bread, with turkey, coleslaw, and swiss cheese… plus a healthy amount of russian dressing… and to top it off… what ever dressing comes out of the sandwich as they cut it… gets pasted right back onto the side. such a «hot mess» as my wife would say. but, it did bring back memories… oh well… maybe in another 5 – 10 years i will try one again.

Surprised to find that there are only 6 reviews for Mr. J’s. If you are ever in Cranford you must come here and try their sloppy joes. Mr. J’s sloppy joes are to die for they are not your typical ground meat and red sauce slapped into a hamburger bun. OHNO this is REAL business. imagine a triple decker sandwich with your choice of meat and their homemade russian dressing as they call it. Basically is a coleslaw with thousand island sauce plus some love. The bread is sliced thinly so it is easy to eat and will not hurt the roof of your mouth. I also tried their peirogies before DELISH served with caramelized onions and a dollop of sour cream. The lady at the cashier was shocked that I ordered so much but hey I was there for business why not splurge on the company tab right?

When people come in from out of town I make sure to bring them here for lunch. It is a ordinary shop, run by a husband /wife team who are friendly and keep the place spotlessly clean. The star here are the sloppy joes which are not the beef and red sauce variety — but instead are a double decker ham on rye sandwich slathered with homemade cole slaw and their version of thousand island dressing. Worth a trip for a unique sandwich.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in Brooklyn and spent a lot of time at local diners and«mom and pop» type restaurants, but whenever I see such establishments, I always get curious. Having visited Cranford often, I had passed Mr. J’s Deli several times, but I always came during hours it was closed. Then, this past weekend I finally got the chance to check it out when it was open! True to its name, Mr. J’s has a long counter on the left when you walk in. The seating area can easily accommodate over twenty people and scattered throughout are fridges of drinks and snacks you’d expect from a deli. Looking behind the counter, I saw some nice looking muffins(red velvet for one) and loaves of *huge* rye bread. It was breakfast time, so I ordered two eggs sunny side up. This comes with a side of home fries and toast, made from the aforementioned big loaves of bread! My girlfriend ordered the«Turkey Sloppy Joe», really a Reuben style sandwich complete with coleslaw, russian dressing and a stack of turkey(not quite Katz’s, but very satisfying). I have to say that everything was cooked and prepared perfectly. My eggs were runny in just the right way, the home fries had a really nice crispy layer with soft potato underneath and the toast was wonderfully chewy but had a crisp, toasted outer layer. The service at Mr. J’s was friendly and you were made to feel like you belong. While I was there, I observed that many of the customers who came in to order food were regulars who knew the staff on a first name basis. That really felt nice to see this from both a customer service and neighborly perspective. I’ve already decided to go back to Mr. J’s soon. Why? Four words: Corned Beef Sloppy Joe!
