Very good place to buy breads but a little too pricy

I love custardy things like custard buns, so I was pretty excited to try the crispy cream. It doesn’t quite live up to its name of being crispy. Overall it is okay. Not great but not horrible either. I also tried this strawberry«hotdog»(I think they called it a strawberry and cream baguette). Definitely unique… Again, I wouldn’t say that it’s horrible, but it’s not something that you would immediately want more of. Also had some unsweetened green tea from here. All three items were decent enough for what it was.

Small bakery store in Mitsuwa. My girlfriend and I found this place while roaming around, looking for Matcha Love. We wanted to get fresh sushi but this place caught our eye with its delicious looking pastries. We got the matcha cornet, teriyaki chicken roll, and the croquet roll. The matcha cornet could’ve been better without the bitter matcha powder on top. The teriyaki chicken roll was good, not enough chicken. The croquet roll was kinda gross and extremely oily, had to throw it away. The service was nice, but we will only be coming back to try the strawberry bun and the curry roll.

Best cream puffs and friendly staff!!! I’ve been going here for years. The loaves of bread are soft as clouds and I can’t wait to try their new items.

I prefer this location over the Irvine one since you have more options. You MUSTTRYBOLONIYABREAD This is not bad for a Japanese bakery; it catches my eye for the sweets. I’ll admit some of the goods are a bit too saccharine for my granny taste buds. The price points are usually reasonable. 1)The Bavaraian Chocolate was alright. I got it out of curiosity, but it didn’t knock my socks off. 2) Walnut France is pretty soft and the walnut pieces aren’t too large/hard when you’re eating. 3) Bacon Epi is alright, my brother loves it. 4) The muffins are pretty good. I can’t explain it, but it tastes different from the Western ones as they are softer and not as crumbly. 5) The BOLONIYABREAD… that’s where it’s at. I’ll admit it is a little steep for a loaf of bread, but the butter goodness is worth it. I like to toast it lightly and eat it like that. Think of a toast and croissant crossbreed. I hate eating croissants, but this is an exception. I try not to get this too often. Who knows how many calories are in it?

If you are a fan of phillo dough and creamy custard this is the place to go to! We ordered a plethora of pastries and were not disappointed(strawberry cheesecake, chocolate donut, crispy crème, and some others). Also, the bread that is sold in loafs there(but not made from the bakery I don’t think) are delicious — especially the onion cheese bread! Toast it up, slather some butter on it, and you got yourself a delicious snack!

It’s always fun to look into the bright & shiny display case boasting the delicious pastries. I can’t help but to get couple of those treats even though I’m already full from eating at the food court inside Mitsuwa! Love their little danish filled with fruits & cream cheese. The savory pans with tuna, egg, & curry are awesome. Their brioche loaf is something special along with the yutaka(the fat ones!!) bread make our weekend brunch shine! There are many good bakeries around the area but Hamada ya is just different. Give them a try after having lunch or dinner at the food courts & enjoy a great finish to your meal with a dessert from Hamada ya!

Their egg donuts are really good! A round donut with a boiled egg in it. Not too sweet and not too salty. It’s yum. Remember to ask for heat up when u purchase it!

I had a bad experience at Bön Epi in Irvine this morning and decided to take my business elsewhere. I was specifically looking for some cream puffs and sandwiches for my mom, who loved them at Bön Epi. My Unilocal search led me to Mitsuwa and to Hamada-Ya. I’ve been here before, but had only purchased bread in the past. I was happy to find some wonderful pastries AND ham sandwiches. Score! Most of the sandwiches came with half a tuna sandwich and half a ham sandwich. I like tuna, but my parents aren’t the biggest fans. So the nice ladies behind the counter offered to swap out the halves so that I could get just ham sandwiches! So nice!!! I ordered a bunch of pastries as well and was very happy with my purchase. The ladies were so kind and attentive and the items were delicious! We will be coming here from now on.

My favorite bakery! I’ve been coming here for years ever since I was little. The shokupan made by Hamada-ya is my long-time favorite; it’s buttery, soft, and each bite into the bread is absolutely divine. I recommend buying the thick slice shokupan and eating it with butter and strawberry jam, it’s something my mother used to always make for me in the morning. As for the pastries sold here, I recommend buying the danishes and orange walnut bread. The danish are crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, and the orange walnut bread is not too sweet, but has just the right amount of orange zest in it that will make you want to eat it again.

Love everything here. I like my chocolate parties because they use expensive chocolate and butter. I always have to stop by every time I shop at the supermarket

This place is a solid 4 stars. The cream they use in the cream cornet and cream puff is light, rich, and the sweetness is right on since I prefer not to go into a diabetic coma after eating from the food court. I think it’s the only thing I get from them is anything with the house cream.

I’ve been going to this place for a few years and now I’m finally writing a review. Hamada-ya consistently delivers high quality(and delicious) products. Their recent addition, the Boston Cream Donut, is absolutely amazing — I don’t understand how they can make such a perfect thing. The proportion of cream, bread, and chocolate is perfect… and the bottom of the donut is bejeweled with perfect little nubs of crunchy bits, but everything is moist and creamy and chocolaty. Even with the risk of more people buying the BCD and them selling out, I just have to praise it and spread the word.(Also, my waistline could use the help). I really don’t think you can go wrong with anything here though, seriously. The cream cornet is flaky and amazing, the hot dog thing is savory and great, curry bun is also really tasty. The sandwiches and the danishes are all great too. I just love this place. All the workers do speak English so don’t be afraid of ordering something — sometimes they greet you in Japanese, but don’t freak out. The only down-side here would be the price, but they are really high quality products imho. This place is better than any French bakery that I’ve ever been to.

Had lunch at the food court and was already stuffed. However, being a fatty and a bread lover, I couldn’t resist and glad I didn’t. The Boston cream donut. SOGOOD! The cream, the bread, the chocolate… drooool. Can’t wait to go back to try their other goodies.

I love Asian bakeries. Their breads are fluffy, and their pastries are not overly sweet. I was so happy to check this bakery out when I happened to be in the neighborhood. I purchased a small loaf of Yutaka bread and a melon bun. A cute little older lady was working behind the counter. She was helping everyone in Japanese and English. I have not tried any of the bread I purchased, but I’m excited to have Japanese toast in the morning tomorrow! –Update Both melon bun and Yutaka bread were delicious! I wish the crust on top of the melon bun had been a bit crunchier. The Yutaka bread was excellent toasted with jam and mascarpone cheese. I wish I had more.

It was surprisingly delicious! Didn’t expect a little bakery located inside a supermarket to taste this good. Had the green tea cornet since I love everything green tea, glad I got it. The strawberry cream cheese pastry was also very good. Will definitely stop by to pick up more pastry next time shopping at Mitsuwa.

*update* located inside Mitsuwa Market, Costa Mesa, CA. 4.5 stars. Refer to older review for further details and additional photos. Has not changed. Breads are still bomb. Worth to drive the extra mile to this market because you can shop for groceries, have lunch, eat desserts, and grab some treats here to take home with you. My favorite is the sugar donut with red beans in it, yum!!! I end up buying too much because I just want everything! Breads are TDF to die for!!! Kenzie happy!!! Just be sure to get here 11am for parking. Lunch rush is til 1−2pm. It’s a freaking mad house in the food court. Thanks for reading! :) ~*kenzie*~ P. S. some pastries are seasonal like the pumpkin pastries. Have to try their seaaonal pastries! !!

A great little bakery tucked away in Mitsuwa Marketplace. It’s tough not to stop by when shopping in the market. Like most places in Mitsuwa, the service is friendly, and they have a wide selection to choose from. They have fresh loaves of bread and rolls, but they also manage to mix both sweet and savory pastries. From curry donuts and croquette rolls, to Melon Pan and An Danish, the options are abundant. The have seasonal danish offerings too, such as Pumpkin Caramel Danish, Strawberry Cheesecake Danish, and Pear Caramel Danish. Apple Cinnamon Danish is my current favorite; it’s like a mini deep dish apple pie with a flaky croissant-like crust. Just be sure to come early enough, as you favorite items might be all gone toward the end of the day.

This review is for the Hamada-ya bakery inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa. Hamada-ya is a chain of Japanese bakeries, this particular taking one corner of this Mitsuwa’s supermarket section. Small in size, it is actually well stocked with Japan’s bakery goods, a delicious yet strange combo of European style baked items and Nippon’s own pastry offerings. Having travelled to Tokyo, the fares offered are as close as you can get to the real deal. Their Euro inspired offerings include English Bread(what may look like just like plain sliced white bread, but with a fresher fluffier taste), Fruit/Sour Cherry/Apple tarts/Danishes, Quiche lorraine, English sandwiches(also known as Bento Sandwiches. Crustless white sandwiches cut in half, four halfs per box, multiple offerings per. My favorite), Sweet Cream baguettes(decadent), Cream Puffs(with fresh cream and sweet custard), Cream Cornet(filled with thick sweet buttery cream), Croissants(smaller than the norm, but with a better buttery crust that gives it both flavor without flaking), while their Japanese fares include the Tuna Melt, Curry, Egg and/or Sweet Cream donuts,… …and way too many more. These are the one I have tried so far, but there is much more to offer for such a small establishment. Some I may try, some are just too weird(Yakisoba pastry, Hotdog pan?) maybe later, some are too common, here or when I visited Japan, and some just scare me: the Chocolate/Pineapple Danish; grab Danish, apply thick layer of creamy dark chocolate, grab slice of Pineapple, dunk one half also in dark chocolate, stick to chocolate side of Danish, grab pastry bag filled with sweet white chocolate(starting to see the pattern yet?) and lay dozens of lines of it, let cool, buy, eat, feel all your arteries instantly cake over with a sweet layer of choco flavored cholesterol, flatline, move towards the light with a satisfied silly grin in your face. *The Good: Everything tasted, convenience of location, offerings. Little odd things like the chalkboards with the items/best selling/flavors of the day. Fresh, fresh, fresh. *The Meh: Some items are in the pricey side. *The Bad: Nope, nada, zip, 文句を言う何もない。 Highly recommendable.
