This restaurant was formerly La Cofradia. The signs outside said Mixtura, but the menus still said Cofradia. My visit was on Saturday Oct 13, 2012 This restaurant was recommended by a co-worker. So I took my Peruvian friends for their anniversary to this place. When we walked in, it had a damp humid smell, looked clean but smelly. There were only 4 tables, however, it took 5 mins for the hostess to show. The restaurant has a weird layout. The bar was empty on the other end for a Sat night. A singer was playing ‘old 60’s/70’s music that we could hardly hear. While the hostess took us to our table, we asked for Pisco Sours. She had no idea what we were talking about. Granted, this was a peruvian restaurant and they are famous for their traditional alcoholic drinks. She said: «I’m sorry, today is my first day». Soon, arrived our waitress and we requested 4 pisco sours. We were surprised that when she came back with the drinks, she did not offer any chef specials or recommendations, so we went ahead and placed our order. By the way, the pisco sours were delicious. We ordered 2 ceviche fusions called Ceviche Botijano(ceviche mixed with black olives, weird, but super good), we also had a grilled lobster ceviche(amazing), causa with shrimp(yellow potatoes) and choros a la chalaca. We were expecting bigger portions, and what we got were tiny little appetizers. We could only split the ceviche in 1 tablespoon for each of us. The causa was very good, but it was more into the presentation side than flavor. Choros a la chalaca was very good. For entrees, we had tacu chaufa — a mixed of the fried rice and beans with veggie in teriyaki sauce and bbq ribs. The rice was good but the ribs were over cooked. For dessert, we had the lucuma tiramisu. Overall, our dinner was good. The flavors were new and exquisite, as always, you can’t go wrong with Peruvian food. So I’d give 3 ½ stars for flavor(could’ve been 5 but portions were too small). On the other hand, the service was poor, especially because the lack of recommendations, and no knowledge of the Peruvian Gastronomy. Seems that the place was trying to be a 5-star restaurant with a 2-star service

Mixtura now occupies the space vacated by the renowned Peruvian restaurant La Cofradia, and is the second location in Miami as Mixtura turns into a franchise. The menu is not the same as the Mixtura on Collins, but the food is equally delicious. As of the month of August, Mixtura in Coral Gables has been open for about a month, and there are still many kinks being corrected and improved as far as service and ambiance. Let me get the food out of the way before I move on to what needs improvement. Mixtura offers one of the best ceviches I’ve ever had. I will not describe it and spoil the surprise but I’ll just say it is awesome. I also tried the lomo saltado, made with tenderloin tips, the way«pitucos» prefer it. The fries on the lomo saltado are delicious yellow potatoes from Peru, which nowadays are fairly available at other Peruvian eateries. Everything was juicy and sauteed al dente, with a side of rice. I finished off with the cappuccino suspiro, recommended by the hostess. To simply put it, it is a version of a caffeinated suspiro limeño. Excellent. The food was overall very good, although nothing could top the ceviche which was extraordinary. OK, let’s move on to the rest of my experience. The restaurant is beautiful, swanky and clean, although I found the layout of the restaurant lacking in feng shui. Mixtura has a dining room with few tables, followed by a long strip of tables. If you are seated on that strip, the constant trips of the waiting staff to the kitchen could become a bit annoying. On the good side, the big glass panels open up the space towards the street. The view, sadly, consist of people trying to parallel park on Andalusia Avenue. Depending on your mood, this could be more captivating and funny than watching any episode of the Real Housewives . But on the day this review takes place, what I found more entertaining was the music and the singing coming from the kitchen at the far end of the hallway. I am guessing that I visited on «take your boom-box to work» day. The whole chic ambiance was destroyed by a good dose of top pop hits mixed with terrible singing. Without knowing, I had become a judge on American Idol –the restaurant version– where the contestants are the cooking line. The kitchen was wailing to the beats of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, the whole time I was there, oblivious that the restaurant was open for business. Being the honorary American Idol judge, and if you have to ask, the winner was the contestant doing an updated rendition of Wild Cherry«Play That Funky Music». Including the obscene words, the chorus went a little bit like this«play that fukin’ music white boy, play that fukin’ music right». You either laugh or shake your head. Also, I found strange that the senior waitress, who was training the bus boy on restaurant etiquette, ignored to the fact that the subtle melodies from the audio system were being overpowered by the kitchen prima donnas. To me it was the stuff you read in bad reviews but, maybe as an exception, I found it to be priceless entertainment. I mean, thank you for giving something to write about, and thank you for serving great food. I can’t wait to visit again, although this time I’ll opt out of the Mixtura«choose your soundtrack package».

We had dinner with my family last night, we came across a flyer and decided to give it a try, The restaurant is clean and beautiful, tastefully decorated. The music was perfect and not too loud. Our server was prompt and courteous. The food was awesome. Had one of the octopus appetizers with seaweed and an olive tapenade type sauce(awesome), a mixed ceviche appetizer(even more amazing) and the Arroz con Mariscos –Lomo Salteado and a Jalea de Mariscos ALLOFTHEMABSOLUTELYDELICIOUS. To top it off, the bill was very reasonable. Would definitely recommend and we will be back!
