While the beer selection is still top notch, I have to say I’ve had a few misses at Spurbeck’s as a returning customer — mainly the fact that they sell expired goods. Now I’m not too picky and don’t mind if non-perishable goods are a few months past the suggested shelf life, but I purchased a small bottle of A-1 sauce that expired in February of 2012 — nearly three years ago!(Note: Still tried the A-1, the vinegar has really taken over.) Earlier in the week I bought a sixer of a Harpoon Winter Warmer that I later noticed was more than a year old thanks to those handy born-on dates. I understand Spurbeck’s is a tiny mom-and-pop shop, and I love that, but you just don’t expect so many run-ins with expired goods as a customer. On a positive note, I finally tried one of their deli sandwiches and it was delicious.

This is a small, cash-only country grocery store on the corner of railroad ave and main st in Cooperstown. The real reason for stopping in is the surprisingly great selection of Ommegang and Duvel beers in the back of the store. I was able to find a few that hadn’t been made in a few years, so it was a great find!

Great beer, wonderful sharp cheddar aged over a year on site! Old-fashioned general store vibe.
