If you are looking for quality authentic japanese food, Kurofune is a place to try. The restaurant has quality sashimi that is super fresh and their cuts are always generous. Their kitchen food is also very delicious. their hwae dup bap with peter sauce and their tempuras! I also recommend their green tea mochi and ice creams!

So I’ve been coming to this place for a while. They changed owners a few times and finally got someone who hired a Japanese sushi chef(who I think pretty much runs the place). This place is a go to during the week if you’re looking for good sushi. Always fresh and great quality. Prices are fair considering it’s great sushi. I love to go and sit at the sushi bar because: 1) I come so often I’m friends with the sushi chef and 2) you get a little bowl with some seaweed salad and chopped sashimi, on the house! My go-to meal is the tuna zuke salad(the zuke dressing is fantastic), soba soup(excellent broth and filled with buckwheat noodle), and whatever sushi I’m in the mood for. I really like their tuna jalapeño roll that’s covered in kani salad. Any sushi you get from here will be good. I don’t normally get food from the kitchen(besides the soup) but if anyone in my party does, they’re never disappointed. The service can take a while if they’re busy. That’s another reason I like to sit at the sushi bar because the sushi chefs make sure you get your food in a timely manor. Overall, great neighborhood sushi joint!

This restaurant was fantastic. The servers were so sweet and kind. The food was fantastic. I had Crazy Roll and Bulgogi. The Korean meat was so juicy and flavorful. Totally worth $ 20. I got so full so quick. It was amazing. Prices were reasonable. Definitely a once in a while date night type of restaurant. The ambience is somewhat small, dim, with Christmas lighting. Overall experience was great. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this spot. We’ll probably be back again

My family loves this place! The food is delicious and the service is amazing! The restaurant is always clean, has a nice ambiance, and the servers always provide excellent service. Great service is a priority for me when eating out and Kurofune really takes the cake with their service. They will go above and beyond to accommodate you – all you need to do is ask! I love their seared tuna and fried clam appetizers and their tempura is done very well. I’m not a big sushi or sashimi fan but I always find something good to eat! Kurofune is a good place to take someone out(or the whole family!) for a casually elegant meal and it’ll become your go-to Japanese place!

Kurofune is my go to sushi place when visiting my family in Commack. Quick service, tasty food and always new menu items to try. I like that the establishment is friendly and clean and their red bean ice cream is a must have. Kurofune really is one of the better sushi restaurants in the area with ample parking and a full liquor menu! I hope the next time I’m there, titos vodka is on their menu! :)

It takes a lot to upset me at a restaurant since I’m pretty easygoing, but tonight I felt I had to share my experience here. It was the first time we ate here and we had wanted to try it. I went with my husband, his sister, and his brother-in-law(they are both vegan). Basically to sum up the visit: 1. Sister and brother-in-law were brought pork gyoza instead of vegetable(big mistake, in my opinion, and I’m not even vegan) 2. The wait time was ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and the worst part of the experience… we got there at 7:30pm, we were seated in 10 minutes, but by the time our food came out it was 9:15pm! Sorry, but that’s unacceptable considering how many empty tables there were… and this was AFTER the pork gyoza was given, so you would’ve expected them to try to make up for the mistake. 3. We asked for green tea, which never came. We had to ask a separate waiter again for the tea. 4. My husband asked for brown rice for his sushi and instead it came with white rice(not a huge deal, but again, after all these little things going wrong you’d expect them to get the orders right). 5. To top it all off, my in-laws were charged for a tuna salad instead of their avocado salad even though(again) they don’t eat meat yet were charged for it. Just a lot of stuff to go wrong when you’re waiting almost 2 hours for your dinner. Food quality was average but more expensive than places that I found more tasty. I guess I should’ve known I was in for a mediocre dinner when the moist hand towelettes they handed us in the beginning of the evening were ice cold :(

The menu has been updated and expanded adding more good things to eat. Service is top notch and the prices are very reasonable n comparison to other Japanese restaurants. The lunch menu served from Noon till 2:30 is a bargain.

Real, authentic Japanese fare. Not a wanna be Chinese owned(lets fool the Americans) Sushi place. Extremely fresh sushi, and the flavor combos are just right! One of the best Sushi places I have ever dined at. The lunch is reasonable priced for what you order. Better than Manhattan! The wait is worth it!

Terrible service. Can’t speak English. Waitress left us alone without checking with us for 10 minutes. Food is ok, not great.

Came in on a weekday night after a friend scouted this place out on Unilocal.High reviews, but it didn’t translate over very well when we visited. Perhaps we caught them on an off night since food was very slow coming out. Perhaps a bit understaffed behind the sushi bar/kitchen? There was complimentary edamame, but once that was finished all of us were getting a bit frustrated and hungry. $ 23 for a salmon teriyaki dinner bento box? Seemed like the largest offering on the menu for my hunger, but it’s debatable if it was worth it. Besides the typical bento box make up, it did come with salmon sashimi. My party didn’t seem overly enthused about their food, probably because of the long time we waited. Seems like the staff were aware of their short comings that night and did offer some complimentary mochi in the end. Overall the ambiance was modern and nice. Prices(above average) are reflective of the Long Island area and that makes me cringe only because of the cheaper prices here in Queens.

I’ve been to Kurofune numerous times now since its reopening and I have to say that their sushi is the best in the area. Im a sashimi eater so I only expect fresh fish and they never seem to disappoint. I usually go with a chirashi or Japanese sashimi dinner. Their staff is also extremely nice and attentive.

We came back for lunch today, and were once again blown away by the excellent food, sizeable portions, and warm and welcoming service. This time, we had the rainbow garden(still absolutely excellent) as our appetizer, and cooked food as our entrées. My mother had the oyakodon and loved it, my father had the curry rice and cleared his plate, and I had the katsudon and BOYWASITGOOD. The oyakodon and katsudon were huge, and my mom and I ended up taking it home for lunch tomorrow! I’m absolutely enamored of the new Kurofune!

Went to Kurofune tonight for the first time since they re-opened and had one of the best meals I have had in a long time. What an outstanding experience. We started with two appetizers, the avocado boat, with tender scallops and masago roe & the baby octopus tempura, which was crispy and tender and delicious. We were given a bowl of edamame on the house. All entrees come with miso soup and a salad, which had a lovely, light dressing. I had the sushi deluxe, which came with eel, salmon roe, and a spicy tuna hand roll, along with a nice variety of nigiri. The fish was immaculately fresh and the ratio of fish to rice was perfect. My husband and son had sashimi platters, which they really enjoyed. But my daughter’s meal was the star of the show-rainbow garden: an assortment of cubed fresh fish with lettuce, crab, avocado, rice, seaweed and a hot sauce. It was amazing. The service was friendly and attentive. We were all pretty much blown away by how good it was. Planning on coming back on memorial day for lunch.

Good sashimi good saki what else could one want. The waitress was very friendly. The couple on the table next to us have been visiting for 35 years. Did not realize the place was that old. My daughter had a soda in a bottle that had been closed using a glass marble that had to be opened by punching the marble down into the bottle.

I’ve visited Kurofune since its grand re-opening and coming from a Japanese person who has eaten their fair share of sushi from Japan, I would say this is the only authentic sushi place on Long Island. A lot of my friends say Kotobuki is a nice sushi place, but I find that only certain things on the menu are okay, while Kurofune is much more consistent. Everything I have tried at Kurofune exceeds my expectations. The sashimi at Kurofune is the best. You can’t say you’ve had real sushi unless you’ve eaten this. Their fish is fresh and it doesn’t have a super fishy taste(ironic, right?) like other not-as-fresh places have. The sushi chefs are the possibly the one and only actual Japanese sushi chefs on LI with decades of experience. The rolls come with a nice amount of rice, unlike many other places where the seaweed on the roll is actually expose because of the lack of rice. You can tell that they don’t skimp out on the ingredients because there is a nice amount of stuff inside the roll. Furthermore, the seaweed is top notch. It’s a funny thing to say, but seaweed is a critical – often overlooked – component of sushi. Kurofune’s seaweed is crispy and thin, which are the characteristics of expensive, high-quality seaweed. On a side note, one appetizer I really enjoyed is the squid tempura. It’s light and crispy and the squid inside is nice and chewy. The sauce that comes with it is amazing.

Summer 2015UPDATE: I’ve had to downgrade them from 4-Stars to 2-Stars. The sushi chef Kameda-san no longer works there, and the sushi is no longer the same. It is more«Americanized» & less authentic Japanese style. Also, they’ve increased the prices. There are now better places around to get good sushi. I recommend Kura Barn in Huntington, on Rt-110/NY Ave. — — — — — — — - OLD Review Below: Kurofune is back, and is just as good as it was! The«Japanese Sushi» is pricey, but comes with top-shelf selections, including Toro. It was well made and very tasty. If you’re looking for high quality sushi, prepared by a chef who’s actually Japanese, then this is the place for you!

It would appear Newsday’s report of Kurofune’s «death» was«premature.» Restoring my original star rating, and I hope to get there tomorrow or Friday to check it out! And I have been back. The menu is different(I kinda miss ‘Sushi Joe”) but the quality and freshness hasn’t changed. Happy to see it back!

Great dinner! We grabbed sushi last Friday night and have never been to the restaurant before and were pleasantly surprised. They had an excellent menu, plenty of different options and I loved that the special rolls were a good variety, I had 2 that were really tasty. They give you edamame which is nice and the ginger dressing on the salad is excellent(hard to find a good one!) The regular rolls were great as well. They have fantastic sushi rice and fresh fish and the chef prepares the rolls nicely proportional. Lastly, the service was great and the owners were friendly and made sure all customers were pleased. Will be going back.
