I want to say, off the top, that I have never actually met this pediatrician. She might be a perfectly lovely woman and a great doctor.
HOWEVER…we are new to the area and had to choose a pediatrician when we enrolled in our new insurance and we just chose her as she has an office close to our home. I called to get records set up and make a first appointment and received the ‘welcome packet’ and record release form and that is where my problem began.
My son (currently 20 mo) has been on the Dr. Sears schedule for vaccines — basically he gets the shots on time, just spread out instead of a ton of shots at once, as there is a history of medicine allergies in my family so I wanted to be cautious. HOWEVER, this doctor has a policy where she will accept no ‘alternative’ schedules and her ‘intro’ letter stated that if we were planning on an alternative schedule we should find another doctor. I called the office, of course, to talk to them, thinking maybe, since he was almost caught up and would be caught up within the year, that that would be ok. IT was not. I was told that the doctor would either give all shots to get him completely up to date or she would refuse to see him.
Now, I understand that there is some argument to ‘alternative’ vaccine schedules and this doctor is not completely out of line. My biggest concern is the «all or nothing» approach — I want a pediatrician who is willing to work with me on my child’s health and not judge my parental choices. That is why I am posting this. In case there are other parents who, like me, want do be able to discuss these things and not be shut down completely before we are even in the door.
Again, she might be a great pediatrician, but I wish I had known all of this before, so that I didn’t have to go thru the hassle of finding a new PCP for my son.
