Great bartender. Good service and good burgers. The prices for drinks are fantastic. The view is awesome. The people are very friendly. I loved the bloodies! Had a great time.

Best view and coldest beer in the valley. Great bartenders, and good, and well priced food. When i have time to stop, i’m here. Check out my pix, and you’ll see why you need to stop here if you’re in Colfax, or on the way to Grass Valley. Heads up, that everyone smokes at the outside bar. And thats the only bar to sit at.

Used to be THEPLACETOBE but now it is just NOT! I believe it may be the difference in staff but also the owner is a complete jerk! I have gone to the Red Frog, hoping to get a better experience than the last… Unfortunately this has not happened. The view from the back deck is THEBEST! Maybe it wold take a new, much nicer owner to revamp the reputation it once had.

I want to first say that I did not stop here to eat, and after my experience with the staff and the clientele, I won’t ever be spending my money here. Without going into too much detail, I happened upon a man that definitely needed help. We stopped at the Red Frog to get him water and try and figure out the best plan of action. We decided that paramedics were needed and upon asking the staff to call them, I was asked to take him down the road to the other bar and call 911. Needless to say, I did NOT do that — and they were rude, insensitive, and could care less if the guy died — as long as it wasn’t there because that is «bad for business.» If you can’t be a decent human being — I don’t want you feeding me and I sure as heck don’t want to encourage others to give you money. I can’t imagine what they might do to a young girl that has been served one too many — I’m sure that the“gentlemen” who suggested that I take the man in need elsewhere would be more than happy to take the inebriated woman somewhere else too…

There are two watering holes in Colfax and The Red Frog is definitely the only one you want to go to. My boyfriend and I were very impressed with the professional courtesy of Sara, the bartender, and staff, and the over sized porch overlooking the canyon. It was a hot day and the water misters were doing their job. The décor is hilarious and we could tell it is a favorite watering hole with the locals. Let me restate that; it’s THE favorite watering hole with the locals because it’s the only bar in Colfax that’s worth going to. Believe me! By the way, Sara earned the tip of two bartenders that day!

I’m giving this place 5 stars for a beautiful view, funky décor, jukebox, outside bar and the best simple old school cheeseburger and fries. After holding an open house at Scotts Flat my friend and I were famished. We saw the reviews on Unilocal and popped in and sat at the bar. Crystal Moon was our bartender, very nice & patient. The menu is basic & limited but my burger & fries were yummy and the view amazing. Add to that everyone was friendly. I played some old school country on the juke box & I will definitely be back. My kind of whole in the wall.

GWEN for the WIN! Extremely courteous to locals and tourists, alike. What a gal! I’ll come back to the Red Frog for her, alone! What a great bartender.

This place was all that was open on a Sunday night as we were driving through the highway. We expected shitty fried bar food, but instead were created with one of the coolest experiences of the weekend. This place is right on the edge of a mountain with an amazing view off the back patio and crazy weird décor, reminiscent of something from Twin Peaks. The people were super friendly and helpful, and the food, while not delicious, wasn’t bad. It was also very cheap, so there are no complains.

Awesome and fun place to hang out after work. Just wish there were more people my age here! But I guess it’s a bit early for that… Having fun for Dallas’ birthday!

The majority of my time spent at the Red Frog(which consists of 1 – 2 times a year because someone decides we should«try again») has been less than glamorous, but last night was the worst to date. I initially sympathized with the lone bartender Gwen. It was a busy Saturday night and she just had a barback for help. But then I realized it was her birthday and the slow service was also due to a number of people giving her birthday drinks and shots. We had hoped we could lighten the blow of crappy service with some embarrassingly awful karaōke, but was told«the karaōke guy just never showed.» So music was dependent on an expensive juke box while we waited to be served for at least 30 minutes in the outdoor section of the bar(where we had been served all night). After the group got a little rowdy in an attempt to be served, we were asked to leave. We told them no one had served us and we saw her look at us and roll her eyes… the response? «Why didn’t you come inside then?» I don’t expect much from a dive bar in Colfax, but when there are 10 customers waiting for drinks that have been cool despite the poor service and buy you birthday shots… maybe walk outside and pour a couple beers. Someone needs to replace this Gwen girl with a nicer more customer service oriented person. I guarantee your sales will go up!

Random stop on the way to Auburn! Great find! Don’t be fooled by the outside! Fun décor inside, an AMAZING view from the outdoor bar and seating area, very affordable drinks and simple food! The staff was beyond friendly, and you could tell everyone there was enjoying themselves!!! Prices?,. Can’t beat ‘em! Will go again!

Yesterday I took my sister from Florida to this establishment-we sat on the back porch with a beautiful view of the canyons, mountains, autumn leaves, railroad tracks afar, and greenery. We had double cheeseburgers with the mountain high fries. Delicious and cooked exactly to our liking. Service was quick, beer was super cold. Fantastic homey cozy place-not very big. We went during the day but could tell at night it may be a different type crowd.

Stopped here for a quick beer on our way back from colfax. We sat out on the back porch where half the bar is which overlooks a huge canyon and mountain range. It is gorgeous and a great relaxing place to enjoy a drink. The bartender was very friendly also. We did not eat so i cannot comment on the food. The only negative thing was that my boyfriend wanted another beer and couldn’t order one because the two bartenders walked into the kitchen and we ran out of time. Other than that it was a great place to stop with a great view and atmosphere. I would like to spend another evening here sometime

This is a bar with a great few off the covered indoor/outdoor back patio. If you like me enjoy authentic flavor this is a good place to stop for a cold one. They have a limited menu as well with burgers pizza and the like, but this is obviously not a fine dining establishment;). Service(Gwenn?) was very attentive and genuinely friendly. Recommend you stop here to have a beer and a snack and enjoy the view!

We’ve stopped here going to and from camping at Scotts. The staff is always super friendly and inviting. Their breakfast burritos are really good! Also a fan of the Jalapeño Poppers. They have a nice outside covered bar and deck out back with a awesome view of the mountains! I would recomend checking out this place if in the area or passing thru.

Decent enough bar. Beer is super cold and the view from the back deck is amazing. Dollar tacos on Tuesday, unfortunately they are probably making a big profit because the tacos taste like canned meat garbage. Service can be slow, depending on when you go.

Beautiful view of the Sierra foothills. No better place to be than sitting on the outside deck on a summer day. One of the best kept secrets for a warm afternoon!

After a long hot hike on Steven’s Trail, we found the Red Frog. I now have a new concept of heaven, paradise, nirvana, elysian fields, whatever. It goes like this… I enter a low-lit building where I’m greeted by staff. I walk out to the smoke-friendly back bar area which is a shaded outdoor open-air patio, and I’m greeted with a cool breeze and a fantastic view of the foothills. The back patio is decorated with a multitude of nautical, sealife, mermaid, and frog décor… there’s even fish and whales and frogs in the treetops nearby. None of the barstools match but I like that kitschy charm– like every patron brought their own from home. There’s even an old school arcade table. An angel named Linda takes my order with a smile and promptly brings my water and my coconut margarita, and even leaves a pitcher of water because she knows how thristy I am. Shortly after my drinks, my cheeseburger and fries arrive… the burger is deliciously greasy and I happily lick my hands clean. A fantastic venue filled with fantastic people, great drinks & food at good prices, and OH! Did I mention the overhead soundtrack to all this? Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Tom Petty, Guns N Roses, Merle Haggard, Eminem, Percy Sledge, Gnarls Barkley and Pink Floyd, IN that order. Yep, it’s heaven! :)
