For a quick meal with friends before a night out, I was thoroughly impressed with the Indian food. The chicken tikka masala and pandoori naan were amazing and my plan to have leftovers for lunch were demolished after I cleaned my plate. The reason I can’t give this more stars is because the service was lacking. It took about 15 minutes before someone came to the counter to take our order. After our food was brought out, we didn’t see any one — no other customers and most disheartening, not staff. Yes, I know it’s fast food — but the fact that no one checked on us or minded the counter made me wonder what they were doing behind the curtain…

I happened to stop by here after our Unilocal event thanks to some great suggestions by new Unilocal friends! And I must admit, I’m going to have to agree with them that this is one of the best places in town to get great Indian food! The restaurant is nice and clean. On the smaller side, but accommodates a decent amount of people. It seems like most people choose take out though. The portions were great. Definitely more than India Star. Flavors here rival that of Namaste, my other fave place in town. The prices have got to be the best in town for what you get though. The Food: Chicken Tikka Masala — 4⁄5 creamy, great flavors. Will get this each and every time I’m here($ 8.99) w/rice Lentils Makhani 4⁄5 flavorful and great spices.($ 6.99) w/rice Garlic Naan and regular Naan — 3⁄5 tasted great and fresh($ 2.49/each order) Samosa — 3⁄5 what you would expect a samosa to taste like.($ 2.49) for two I will definitely be a regular here as long as they are consistent with their foods. Flavors were great and the portions were more them other places in town.

I’m very conflicted on my review of Kurry Express. My boyfriend and I have eaten there three times with delightful food and service, though I will say there is a large language barrier… so it has caused issues with communication. However, the food is great and usually comes out very quickly. Tonight’s experience was so poor that we don’t know what to think now. I ordered chicken tikka masala and my boyfriend ordered paneer tikka masala. We waited about 20 minutes(at least 10 minutes longer than usual) and the server brought us the«paneer tikka masala» and our naan. They didn’t give us rice or my chicken tikka masala. We sat around exchanging glances for a good ten minutes before my food was brought out. Still no rice though. We sat awkwardly dipping our naan in our food for a while, at which point my boyfriend questioned me on the protein in his food– turns out they’d given him(a vegetarian) the chicken. So we switched food and waited another 10 minutes before my boyfriend had to go up and ask for rice… Which took another five minutes. I’ll also mention that we were one of 2 tables in the restaurant. Though the food was good as always, we were very disappointed with the service. Giving a vegetarian a chicken meal in an Indian restaurant seems ludicrous. I’m sure we’ll give them another chance to redeem themselves as we love the food.

Caution: Be warmed that although they’ll tell you its mild; in fact its very spicy. Also, I felt it was too expensive. As others have said, price doesnt match up w/quantity. Moreover, slow & unfriendly service. Finally, I too did not appreciate the cheap paper products(thin hot dog trays that the rice stuck to & plastic bowls for the curries) they serve diners.

A decent spot for Indian food, there are way better places to go around Des Moines. I ordered a tikka masala and a saag chicken to go around 5pm on a Friday– the order took about 25 minutes, so not super«xpress» to me. The tikka masala was decent, a bit bland compared to what I’m used to, and the saag was extremely salty which really disappointed me! Probably not somewhere I would go to again.

Solid take out joint. Food wasn’t too spicy for our taste. Naan wasn’t the best but we enjoyed our food.

A self service place. Option to dine on there. Food is good especially rotis and malai kofta. Reasonable prices. Biryanis are ok. Try their curries and appetizers, they are better than biryanis. Overall a good place when compared to other Indian restaurants in Iowa.

Good value for the money but be warned — if your dish is served spicy, it’s gonna come out VERY spicy!

This restaurant was AWFUL… I would not even give it one star… we ordered the butter chicken and the lamb curry. We went out of our way and exited the highway for curries that had absolutely no meat. There were max three or four TINY pieces of meat in that poor excuse of a curry. Will never come again!

I like the place good food! But the spices they use in the food are more than what is needed. I would stick to curries & Naan! Their ras malai is good to have. Avoid Biryanis, Appetizers

Seeeeeeeriously impressed by Kurry Xpress — wowza. Grabbed takeout from here over the weekend after coveting some Indian food for quite some time. Called ahead with the order, arrived 20 minutes later as advised, and was promptly handed the glorious bag of dinner. We paid $ 30(with tip and tax) for Paneer Saag, Chicken Methi, garlic naan, and butter naan. A little pricey, but so very worth it. I was worried that ordering the Saag would mean that I’d miss out on that delicious Indian spice, but boy was I wrong. The spice and heat in both of our dishes were insane — and I mean that in the best way for spice addicts like us. The naan was a little thinner than I prefer, but it was still tasty(and you get a lot for $ 2.49!) The chicken methi was probably one of the hotter things I’ve ever tried, but again, the flavors were out of this world. We both could not have been more pleased with our experience here. Can’t wait to return! Fellow Unilocalers, thanks again for steering me in the right direction!

Really good Indian food! I had the chicken tikka masala, and tried the chefs special and chicken saab. All the entrees were hot and delicious. The naan was warm and buttery, and the gulab jamun was the perfect way to end the meal. Also we got to watch Bollywood movies while we ate! I would definitely go back again when I’m in west Des Moines.

Came in with my wife and mom a couple days ago and were excited to dine here because we have heard so many good things about it! This is definitely«express» I will tell you that, you order at the front counter, take a number, get your utensils and paper plates, and take a seat. We approached the counter and proceeded to look at the menu. Honestly, the items all looked very similar, I had no idea what to go for so I asked for recommendations for us all. The gentleman at the counter was very friendly and assisted us. We eventually got the Samosas for an appetizer, plain Naan bread, a creamy chicken curry, a spicy chicken curry, and a not spicy lamb curry. I’m sorry I do not know the name of the dishes we ordered. We sat down and waited for the food, the appetizer came first quickly, the Samosas were very good, good texture and flavor, a bit small however. The wait for our main course took a bit longer than expected, especially for an express location, but it wasn’t too bad. All of the dishes tasted great! I was impressed with the curries and the Naan bread we ordered. I recommend getting Naan bread to go with the curry because you will finish the rice it comes with and still have extra curry left. Good overall experience! I recommend you look at the menu before going to this restaurant so you have an idea of what you want.

We stopped here to get a quick bite to share before heading home. It was very clean and the staff were smiling and welcoming. We got the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. The chicken tikka had large onions and pieces of bell pepper, which was different from other local Indian restaurants. It was nice but took away from the traditional taste a bit! Also, we thought the portion was a bit small, especially for a dinner price. Overall, we liked it but prefer other local Indian restaurants. It’s worth a try!

Fast Indian food on a paper plate! Count me in! This is a good little spot for a quick bite of some very tasty Indian Food! I love Samosas and these folks know how to do it right! Piping hot, and beaming with flavor! For a «fast food» type place the flavor is great, and they will even make it more spicy if you want! Great portions for the price and always fast! I have only got Vegan stuff, so I can’t speak for the meat but the veggie options are great!

I have gotten take out from this place a few times. The food is pretty good, although if you don’t like spicy food some of it might be too spicy for you. I actually don’t mind it spicy. I would recommend the samosas. The price of the take out is a bit more than if you were to get a pizza or chinese food. The service is lacking. Usually when I call in, the person on the other end acts like they are doing me a favor. And then when I pick up the food, very rarely do I get a thank you… even when I say thank you… which really pisses me off. One time I stopped by without calling to put in a take out order, and the guy acted like this was the oddest thing he has ever heard of. He even said«most people call in,» and then tried to dismiss me. Seriously WTF?

This is one of my favorite Indian places in Des Moines. I always order their chicken tikka masala and saag paneer — both are delicious. The wait time is a bit longer than expected, but the food always comes out super hot and fresh. Beware that the food IS going to be a bit spicy, even if you ask for it mild.

Perhaps I’m spoiled from living in both Iowa City and Denver, but the two Indian restaurants I’ve been to in Des Moines fall short of what I’ve come to expect. The good: Food is well seasoned and portions are very generous. My $ 6.99 lunch order came with a nice pile of onion pakoras, salad, rice and a good sized portion of aloo gobi. The bad: You are not asked how spicy you want the food. While it tasted good, I like mine to be red hot. Furthermore, if you are going to serve a salad and appetizers with your lunches, appropriate condiments need to be provided. No raita or chutney was provided, nor were napkins or plasticware. Also, when you’re taking a customer’s order, its rude to keep earbuds in your ears. As a note, I was not given naan(despite leaving a tip on takeout) with my order like a review below indicates.

I have been here twice, bought two groupons to this place. Was a bit worried as some of the groupons here in the des moines area have led me to places like the kabab house which are on the verge of closing or honestly just not very good. I was pleasantly surprised here though. I ordered the Malai kofta(vegetarian«meat» balls in a cream gravy), samosas, and an order of naan. The samosas are great and the two dipping sauces that they serve with them are perfect. Very authentic. The malai kofta came in a plastic one use tupperware and I received rice to go along with it. There were some crispy fried«veggies»(couldn’t tell what they were) that came with the meal as a side. The malai kofta were excellent, soft and buttery but not too mushy. The gravy that it was swimming in was awesome to dip the naan into. Here are a few of the items I am not too crazy about: 1. everything is served in plastic or styrofoam. I would never be accused of being an environmentalist but this place’s carbon footprint must be enormous 2. the crispy fried vegetables which came with a side were less than crispy. i could tell they should have been crispy and were probably crispy an hour before I got them. 3. the price, without the groupon my order would have come out to about 15. While the food was very good i would expect a price point closer to about 10. Bottom line, its the best Indian food in Des Moines, I would rate it 3.5 and would be a 4 if the value for the money was better.

I decided to try out this place after a co-worker gave me rave reviews about it. After eating there, I would definitely have to say you can’t judge a book by its cover. The Indian Food has to be one of the best in Des Moines. I had the Paneer Saag lunch special and they give you a bang for your buck! Lunch specials come with a complimentary salad and vegetable pakora(fried vegetable fritters). The portions are Very large. They definitely give you more than any Indian place in I would say this place is definitely striving to improve because on my first visit, service was slow. However, during my second visit three weeks later, service was a lot quicker. Something to note is that if you’re looking for fancy dishes and an environment, this place may not suit you. All meals are served on a Styrofoam plate, plastic silverware, and plastic containers. It’s self-service where you order at the cashier and throw away your own food. It’s no big deal to me. Overall, I definitely recommend this place!
