I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Cupcake Café before. Well, Unilocalers, I’m sadden to say this will be the last time I’m coming here. Took our daughter for her 7th birthday after dinner to get some cupcakes. We’ve been here before so we assumed we know what to expect, right? WRONG! The cupcakes were limited to certain flavors. The price had gone up by 75 cents a cupcake. Now, each cupcake is $ 3.25 so it’s overpriced plus the size much smaller than before. It’s smaller than the average cupcake size. Naturally, one would think that it’s money well spent since they’re so delicious and it’s a treat. Well, WRONG again! The cupcake doesn’t taste fresh :( I guess we should have known and looked at the recent reviews before stopping by. The place was empty like a ghost town. I’m calling it now, if they don’t improve in at least taste and quality, they will close shop soon.

The most disgusting cupcake I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. I drive out this way everyday and my daughter saw the sign for the Cupcake Café and I figured we’d stop in this evening to grab some for the way home. The location alone is less than desirable. It’s a small«store» that maybes allows about 3 to 5 people in the store at one time. No indoor seating so your forced to sit outside or take it to go. The girl in the store was less than friendly and never once said hi, just gave us the cupcakes and put her hand out for the money. Customer Service isn’t a strong point here I’m guessing. She picked out the Oreo cupcake, and I chose the Blackout cupcake. Can someone please tell me why a chocolate cupcake smells and tastes like bleach? My daughter also stated hers also tasted funny and wasn’t good. Besides the bleach taste, the cupcakes were so stale. Next time, we’ll stop for frozen yogurt.

Purchased a $ 4.00 Frappé, it was okay, very icy. BUTTHE best part was the Cheap straw I was given. Threw half the drink out, can’t drink an icy thick coffee with a bent, thin straw. SOANNOYING. Totally riped off. I asked the girl if she had a better straw, she looked confused and didn’t answer. Owner has No pride in their business. Cupcakes and coffee shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out.

Tons of flavors to choose from! Ok, I will say right away that I prefer Mr. Cupcakes. My husband was told by a coworker that Mr. Cupcakes himself is a jerk and to support this place instead. I don’t know how true any of that is but for my birthday my husband bought one of each flavor from Cupcake Café so I have a very clear opinion of this place at this point. Their strawberry cupcake is AMAZING. Best ever. Whipped cream frosting, fresh strawberry flavor. Their whipped cream frosting is so superior to their buttercream which I wished was creamier and less sweet — and I almost never wish things were less sweet. I really enjoyed their vanilla based cupcakes but was not a fan of their chocolate cupcakes. They reminded me a lot of Hostess chocolate cakes. Unfortunately, and I feel really bad saying it, a lot of the cupcakes had a «been in the freezer for a while» taste to them and a lot of the buttercreams apart from the vanilla left a weird taste in my mouth. Maybe they have too many flavors to bake them fresh often enough? Still, most of the ones I tried were solidly good cupcakes and I ate a lot of them. I have to mention that maybe I am insane because I shared the rest with a large group of friends and they went insane over them. Insane! Everyone wanted to know where they came from and semi-joked that they wanted to throw parties just so I bring these cupcakes. My husband also thinks these are the best cupcakes he’s ever had. I still prefer Mr. Cupcakes!

So I had a taste for some flavorful cupcakes on a Saturday, my husband suggested just getting dessert from the restaurant we were planning to eat dinner at but I was adamant about getting some cupcakes from this place before we go to dinner just in case they were closed after we finished eating. The place was very crowded. No biggie I’m a patient person but as I am waiting for my turn to place my order. myself and the other customers began to form a line. However some apparently overly entitled women comes in out of nowhere and says my kid wants that one! Now bc the place was so crowded along with the tone of entitlement in her voice I thought this women was adding on to an order of someone that was before me in line. It turns out that she wasn’t and she was just skipping the line .I didn’t realize this until the woman was on her way out the door. at this point I became very annoyed with the whole situation bc at the very least the cashier should have been trained to keep order in the store and give direction to the people who were ordering so that there could be some structure in the store. I had to say excuse me I’ve been here and I’m next bc she was about skip over me a 2nd time. No apology was given. I was dignified enough to even say thank you to the cashier after I received my order and she did NOT even reply with you’re welcome. She just went on to the next customer… there are other places to buy dessert from and I don’t have to tolerate an unstructured ordering process along with poor customer service! I will drive a little further out in Clifton to purchase Mr. Cupcakes!

I don’t know what everyone’s problem is. My cupcake was DAMNGOOD!!! Cake was fresh and perfectly spongey, icing was thick and flavorful, not overly sweet. I had the French vanilla and the boy had banana something or other. Went perfect with our coffee at home after Zinburger. Girl behind the counter was sweet. Seriously… I don’t know what everyone’s problem is.

UPDATEFROMMYORIGINALREVIEWBELOW12÷5÷14: I went back today to return my two cupcakes, and the girl said they can’t do returns, only exchanges, and offered me 2 new cupcakes. Uh. no thanks. Why would the others be any better? So I picked out Starburst and a Peppermint Patty equal to the $ 6.50 I wasted here. Oh, and got a halfhearted, uninterested apology from the girl working. I wish the manager or owner was there, maybe they would have been more concerned since it’s pretty disturbing when a cupcake shop’s cupcakes taste like bleach. Oh well. Guess I’ll never be going back to their original location either which I actually liked, too turned off now. DISGUSTING is the only word. I don’t know what happened tonight. First time at this location but I’ve been to their original store in Nutley numerous times with no problems so I didn’t even think to check my cupcakes before I got home. Got home just now with my two cupcakes and they REEK of bleach, and taste like bleach. You couldn’t pay me to eat these. I have no idea why this is, but I didn’t intend to pay $ 6.50 for a box of bleach. I’ll be going back tomorrow for a refund. Completely bizarre and unacceptable.

Looking for something to satisfy my sweet tooth after lunch… popped into this place for a treat. Tiny place, not enough room to maneuver around to look at all the cupcakes in the case(another couple was debating as well thus blocking the case). The woman behind the counter looked pissy… ur surrounded by cupcakes… wat’s ur problem… crack a smile for goodness sake! $ 3.50 for a regular sized(believe me) cupcake… it was good but eh… def not worth going back!

The cupcakes are not bad, but what you really need to come for is the cream puffs. My favorite are the cookies and cream, biscoff, and nutella. And now they have these brownies… OHMYLAWD. I came here for the cream puffs but left with the brownies, and boy was it worth it. Super fudgey, really just the best brownies I’ve ever had. They have a bunch of varieties that I’m working my way through. Don’t leave the promenade without trying them!

We went to this café after having Joe’s Crab Shack. It was this tiny place in a middle of a shopping complex. They had a lot of cupcake options and all of them are stuffed. We got Michelle Ma Belle — Vanilla cake, stuffed with Kahlua toffee custard, topped with crème de cocoa whipped cream and crushed toffee, at first. It was great, not too sweet but very creamy. So we decided to give Carmita a try — vanilla cake, stuffed wtih chcolate peanut butter mousse, topped wtih vanilla peanut butter icing and a Dollop of mousse and crushed nuts. However, it was too sweet and we were disappointed. The service was pretty slow. There was only a couple in front of us and ordering 2 cupcakes and a drink. We had to wait for at least 10 mintues to get our order.

I’d been looking to stop in here for a while. Ordered a carrot and a Boston crème pie cupcake. The carrot was hard as a rock, dry, and totally unpalatable. Even after we had left a tip at the sales counter, the sales girl did not acknowledge our complaint about the stale cupcake. She said«they come fresh daily and they’re just refrigerated.» That was no refrigerated cupcake. I’ve tasted better cupcakes boxed from the grocery store. I spit out the bite I took and threw the rest out. The Boston crème pie one was fine but not amazing. For $ 3.50 I would have at least expected an offer for a different cupcake. I definitely won’t be returning here.

Not terrible, but I wouldn’t come back. The cake part was alright, but the icing on both the banana cream and chocolate peanut butter tasted just like Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines. I heart Betty and Duncan cause I’m a terrible baker(but a good eater). But… your icing should taste a lot better then Betty and Duncan, Cupcake Café.
