I’ve tried this place twice since moving into the hopsice complex. I’ve been very underwhelmed each time. The first time, I was looking for a snack and tried the mozzarella sticks. They were fine. However, they served them with ranch dressing rather than marinara. That was weird and not really enjoyable. They also sell soda at a higher price than the vending machines around the corner. The second time, I tried their cold italian sub. The ingredients were fine and didn’t taste bad. However, the amount of meat and cheese was terribly under-proportioned for the bread. The sandwich came with a choice of sides. I got the pasta salad. It was better than the sub, by far. It had way too many olives for my taste, but I’m fussy. I’m happier walking across the street to the 7 – 11 for a hot dog. Better food and better prices.

I completely disagree with Clean Plate’s review. I work nearby and I have been visiting this café for nearly 4 years. There is nothing«gruff or rude» about Drew(the owner), he is one of the nicest guys and always goes out of his way to make my experience a great one. Regardless of how busy they may be he always takes a minute to say hello and ask me how I am doing. He has taken my breakfast order 30 minutes after they stop serving breakfast, he has made special order items for me just because I wanted something different or done in a different way, his staff is super friendly and the food ROCKS! Sure, you aren’t generally going to get an entire lunch entrée with a side for less than 5 bucks and that is because it isn’t a drive thru or serving less than par food. You will get fresh, cooked to order meals that are plentiful in portion and taste great. They always have different specials of the day that are interesting and yummy to try. The pretzel sliders are one of my favorites. Add to all of this Drew and the Blue Heron Café do a lot for charity organizations throughout the year. In my opinion you won’t find better than this if you are looking for a delicious lunch.

If a café has a great variety of offerings and they’re all wonderful, I’ll revisit that café daily. Even if said café is in a hospice. Don’t be scared, fool! Infamous«One-Sentence Review» of Blue Heron Café «If you find yourself paralyzed from how great the food is here, you’re on the campus of the hospice so you’re in luck»

The Blue Heron is open for breakfast and lunch until 3 pm. The current owner, Drew, is a bit gruff(some have said rude), the prices are a bit high and the specials are often odd(he loves to throw Gorgonzola into everything, is heavy handed with the fryer, sometimes offers an inexplicable quesadilla with pomegranate seeds and often pairs seafood and cheese.) Many Hospice employees and volunteers make it a point of not eating there, but as the place is inside the Hospice complex and there are a few other employers nearby, Drew has survived because of his location. The chicken portions have decreased greatly while the prices have only gotten higher. There is personalized attention from Drew once he’s gotten to know you and Rick is absolutely worth his weight in gold. He is the runner, takes orders, does prep and dishwash and is usually the only smiling face in the place. I do have a few favorites on the specials and on the menu and eat there more often than my wallet probably allows. The place is cleaner than it used to be and they are pretty fast in preparation. Lots of sandwiches — hot & cold — lots of salads, but their soups are bland, underseasoned and watch the specials, they are often on the menu for days…
