Time warp. When I lived in Northside as a kid, there was this spot called Blue Jay in Hamilton Avenue that is so reminiscent of this spot. Its still there, actually. Wooden bench seats, vinyl table covers, sketches of the proprietors on the walls, and of course the standard fate of nostalgia… black and white photos of white folks from decades ago. Gotta love it. Comfort food… is…so comforting. I had Ruth’s Meatloaf dinner, a side of potato cakes(yes Cindy G… they were kinda done done) and macaroni & cheese with a dinner roll. The meatloaf was yummy… the rest was alright I guess. I cleaned my plate, if that matters. :-) I do plan to go back for breakfast though. Probably have a post-workout meal there after my Saturday morning session at LA Fitness. I’m cool with Hitching Post… I’ll come back e’eryonce-in-a-while if I’m in the mood.

Had the chicken fingers, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. Not impressed by any of it. Friendly service though.

Good home cooking style food. Very friendly staff. Usually not that crowded. except for Sunday mornings. If you plan to catch brunch here then be prepared to wait for a bit. Was really surprised that they didn’t serve chicken and waffles. seeing that it’s primarily a fried chicken place. Things that’s make you go hmmmmm…

Been coming here for decades. Food as great as I remember, although the prices are a little higher compared to other greasy spoons. Overall I feel it’s worth it.

Pretty good if you need just a quick lunch. The food doesn’t blow me away, but I think it tastes good. Last time I went I had the fish sandwich which was surprisingly good. It came with crinkle cut fries which were amazing. I took home a slice of the chocolate peanut butter pie and WOW was it good. The pie is probably the best thing about this place. I won’t be rushing back, but if somebody wanted to go I would probably join them.

I’m never very impressed by Hitching Post. I have eaten the fried chicken many times and have also tried the mac and cheese, French fries, bread rolls, and some of the pies. The fried chicken is okay but is nothing special at all. It doesn’t have any extra flavor, the breading is plain, and it’s pretty greasy. The sides are all subpar and taste very processed and mass produced with cheap ingredients. The pies are all traditional American country diner style cream pies. Every time I eat here I feel very unhealthy after I finish. Basically, I eat here when I want a quick meal that I can get close to home while still supporting a local business. But I don’t expect it to be high quality and it isn’t. The service is always prompt and I have never had a problem. I normally order take-out and it’s ready quick, about 15 minutes. Will I eat here again? I’m sure I will. Have I had better? Definitely. Would I recommend it to others? No.

Pretty decent comfort food… I ordered the two piece fried cod dinner with onion rings and potatoes cakes… they initially forgot one piece of fish when they brought the food out… no big deal but the second piece when brought out was not cooked as well as the first one. I’m thinking they were in a rush to get it out and pulled it from the fryer a bit early. A little disappointed by that but I did enjoy the potatoe cakes, onion rings, and the family restaurant feel of the place.

Probably not the place for me. As a vegetarian there is not a lot of interesting stuff on the menu. I had an egg sandwich that was very ordinary. I tried the kettle cakes which I thought were pretty bad. They tasted like grease soaked dough you’d get at a county fair. I felt bad about myself after eating them. The atmosphere is not wonderful. It was a beautiful day out and I felt like I was eating in a cave. It is very country and I guess the prices are good for what you get. The service was ok– I had to asked for a coffee refill. I suppose I should have avoided it as they are known specifically for cooking chicken and other animals.

This place has been on my list to try for quite a while. I love breakfast and had heard they had a good one. The place is small and the décor dated, but I certainly would rather have that than mediocre food. Hitching Post puts the priority on food and that’s how it should be. I ordered the veggie omelette which came with mini potato pancakes and their famous kettle kakes(think beignets). The omelette was perfect; fluffy, not too much cheese and not at all greasy. The potato pancakes I wish had a little bit more spice, but I realize that’s a personal preference. I always desire something sweet after my meal and their kettle kakes provided the perfect ending to the meal. I will have to go back and try the fried chicken, but will definitely keep this place on my list for breakfast.

Decided to check out this spot for brunch today and was pleasantly surprised. Seemingly out of place in the hip Hyde Park/Oakley area, it’s an old, countrified diner-like joint, known best for their fried chicken, but skilled with the skillet as well. Rumor is lines can get long on the weekends(makes sense in this area) but we were able to walk in and be seated within minutes in a Sunday at noon. The breakfast menu consists of standard fare like omelettes and egg/meat/potato platters, but is highlighted by their homemade kettle cakes – which are essentially beignet donuts. Amazing! My wife and I opted to try an omelette plate and eggs and pancakes and split them. She got the veggie omelette featuring nicely sautéed mushrooms and onions, tomato, a mix of cheeses, and fluffy egg goodness. The omelette plates also come with perfectly crisp, greasy little potato pancake rounds, and 2 of the beignets. Quite a deal for less than $ 9! I got two eggs over medium, bacon, and pancakes. The eggs were done just as ordered, the bacon was salty and crisp the way I prefer it, and the pancakes were flavorful and fluffy. All in all exceeding our expectations. Not the fanciest place, with linoleum tablecloths, and country décor(read: lots of chicken figurines), but tasty comfort food that was most definitely a win.

Tucked in a small strip mall on the corner of Madison Rd & Edwards, the Hitching Post is a well grounded eatery ever since I’ve been around — and that’s a good fifty years. A clean, quite restaurant serving breakfast, lunch & dinner in quite simple fashion at a reasonable price. Wanting breakfast, I ordered pancakes w/bacon & eggs. Hard to screw that up & I pretty much licked the plate clean. Atmosphere is pleasant and sparkling clean. Not gonna be considered ‘high end’ but maybe more of a local ‘greasy spoon’- but there’s nothing wrong with that. Glad I dropped in & hope more people rediscover this ‘unpolished’ gem in Oakley

This place is the best kept breakfast nook in Cincinnati! Staff is always awesome and service is so fast! Not to mention the portions are perfect and food is delicious! One of my favorite dives ever!!!

My husband and I came in today for breakfast around 11AM and there wasn’t a wait. We both got Frank’s Hometown Fries — potatoes topped with two eggs, cheddar cheese and your choice of two additional toppings. I got bacon & onions and my husband got ham & mushrooms. My husband always orders his eggs medium well & this is the only place we’ve been where they were brought out exactly right! The portion was huge and each came with two kettle kakes. Side note: GETTHEKETTLEKAKES. They’re delicious! The hometown fries were really good, but too many potatoes and not enough bacon for me! My husband loved his and the pieces of ham he got were pretty big. As we were leaving the place seemed to get busy for lunch — we are planning on going back to try the fried chicken everyone has been talking about!

We walked in, and my husband immediately said«ooo, this is an old people place.» If you knew my husband you would know this is actually a compliment. He makes it his M.O. to find a «meat n three» or comfort food place everywhere we go. I think we’ve found it. :) The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly, even at 1 on a Saturday. The food was satisfying. I had the«famous» fried chicken with mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese(I want to rename this the«cholesterol special»). The chicken really was great– something in their batter or oil makes it more flavorful than your run of the mill KFC. It was hot and tasted like quality chicken. The mac n cheese was that creamy orange soft mixture I’ve come to love at a place like this. The mashed potatoes seems like instant– they were definitely the under performers in this show. My husband’s buffalo chicken sandwich was«everything I expected but no surprises», he’d give it 3 stars. He also had the potato pancakes which had the same tasty flavor of the fried chicken and were a nice size. We split a piece of the strawberry pie for dessert– tasty and epic, so pretty! I’m considering ordering a pie for my husbands birthday from here– I would trust it to be tasty and beautiful! Definitely planning to return and enjoy again– perhaps some of their tempting breakfast options!

We came here for brunch, so this rating is for brunch only. We ordered biscuits and gravy, which comes with 2 eggs. The biscuits were tiny and the gravy was watery. They use water to thin the gravy(it separates and floats on top of the gravy) and the pieces of ground sausage were microscopic. We also ordered the pecan /bacon pancakes which we liked. We ordered goetta as well, yet, for all the Cinci hype we found it quite disappointing(try livermush from North Carolina and you’ll never eat goetta again). It seems there are just too many cost cutting measures in place here, which makes it impossible to up their rating. It’s basically a no frills diner. Our server was nice though and the Unilocal Check-in discount was great.

Hitching Post is said to have some killer fried chicken(and I will be back to test that) but for this visit we ventured out to try a good old fashioned country breakfast. What we didn’t expect was for this place to be such a hot spot! On a Saturday afternoon around 12pm we found ourselves with a 30 minute wait for this strip mall country cookin’ joint. People were lining up around the block to eat here and I couldn’t believe it. By the time we would have left to go put out name in somewhere else it would have been just as long, and sure enough we were seated within the time and the wait was not that bad. This place is as country as it gets. The tables are topped with roll out linoleum, are there are gingham and roosters everywhere. Kind of funny to see in Hyde Park. Our server was very fast and friendly. We opted for two coffees to start and two omelettes. The omelettes had less cheese in them than I am used to, but the texture of the eggs were great. Light and folded over properly with all the yummy fixins inside. I was surprised to learn that both meals came with potato pancakes and beignets. At first I felt like a huge fatty, but I couldn’t resist and just dug in! The potato pancakes were small and over fried. They tasted like they were mass produced and just thrown into the frier. The beignets on the other hand were HEAVENLY. Having had my fair share of beignets(both good and bad) I was scared to even see this featured on the menu, but much to my surprise they delivered in a BIG way. I would go back right now and just order those that’s how freaking insatiable these little buggars were. Overall: The atmosphere is not much to look at and from what I experienced there is almost always a wait. But for a cheap greasy spoon/diner breakfast this is up there. Pro tip: order the beignets.

The experience here was ok. We went with my mother and mother-in-law. We were seated quickly for a Saturday brunch seating and served equally as quickly. Staff was very friendly. Food was standard diner food but fairly good quality. I had steak and eggs. I asked for my steak medium and it was closer to rare. The fried potatoes that came with it were limp and not even close to done. My mom had the potato cakes with her meal and they were delish! We probably won’t go again. The experience was just not good enough, even though it wasn’t horrible, to choose this place over the 50 other really good places in the Hyde Park area. They seemed fairly busy though so it must be popular with the locals.

Whenever I try a new place I want it to be great. Today, this was not the case. Having read the mixed reviews on here I decided to check it out anyways because City Beat recommended it for great fried chicken. And who doesn’t like great fried chicken? We waited about 20 minutes to be seated, which was fine. When we sat down we were ready to order because we looked at the board during that time. To our dismay they do not allow you to order the buckets/family meals for dine in. There were 4 of us and we each needed to order our own fried chicken meal. Again, fine. The disappointment here is that the food was flat-out not good. The fried chicken was the best part, and it was mediocre at best. The breading had no flavor, it was dry(okay, maybe my fault for ordering a breast, but my friends also thought theirs was dry), and it wasn’t very meaty. The mac and cheese was very creamy, not my preference but I know some people like it that way, but it had hardly any flavor. The green beans were cold and again, hardly any flavor. I barely ate my food because it was so bland. I prefer food to be made using spices, seasoning, herbs, etc. Also, my partner ordered coleslaw for a side and it inexplicably arrived well before everything else. Confused for a mayonnaise salad?

The place has the feel of an old timey place that found itself suddenly being taken seriously with sort of a hipster kitsch décor. I came in for lunch and I wanted to try the highly celebrated fried chicken. I let the server talk me out of it and I wish I hadn’t. I had the Kentucky Bourbon Beef sandwich. It has problems. First, my definition varies greatly from their definition of thinly sliced. A thinner slice on the beef would have hidden the fact that it’s not very high quality. It was kind of tough and even though it was slathered in that corn syrup based sauce they refer to as a Bourbon sauce it was dry. Every bite all I could taste was corn syrup. Too much of the sauce. The onions were not sauteed as promised. They had been on the flat top only long enough to get soaked in grease without getting cooked at all. The black pepper bread was good though. As I was finishing up my sandwich my server cruised by at a very fast walk and hollered over her shoulder, «I’ll grab your check for ya hun» from about nine or ten feet away. She came back with my check and gave me a perfunctory and obviously insincere, «Unless you wanted a dessert or another drink or something?» which is server speak for«My lunch rush is over and I’ve made enough tips for the day so GTFO so I can get my side work done.» You pay at a register up front that was flanked by some very tired looking pies. On the menu the mention of fresh baked pies had me thinking about having dessert but these almost made me glad the server hustled me out. Worst advertising for pie ever. Why on earth would you proudly display those poor old things? It was like a warning for those that are planning on coming back NOT to get pie the next time no matter how good the menu made it sound. I’ll be back to carryout the fried chicken but the service and food here made me feel like I was an afterthought. I work too hard for my money to spend it here.
