The surrounding neighborhood has been described as a «ghetto.» It is certainly not. I feel quite safe and secure playing there. The course is well maintained and has good drainage. The fairways are packed tight and the greens are small — it’s something of a challenge to folks who like to overwhelm a golf course with big hits. Great place to test your aim and accuracy. Friendly, helpful staff

I was pleasantly surprised to find this course in a deteriorated area of the city. It has some history behind in… it’s the oldest course west of … I forget. The staff can easily rattle off a history lesson for you. It was a fairly straightforward play here. If you are a bit rusty on your play, beware of the houses which back up to the course. 18 holes took about 3 hours. I learned that Cincinnati charges non-players just to ride along.

I really enjoyed my 9 holes here. Probably because I’m working out some of the kinks in my game, and had some shots I was very proud of here, but still it seems like a nice course. It was pretty hilly for me, and therefore challenging, but I appreciated the differentiation. Fairly thin fairways and small greens, but who doesn’t like a challenge. I want to give a different idea of the location of this place than the first review. It is near the ghetto, but I would argue the fact that it’s in the middle. It is towards the nicer part of the area and you even play in the back yard of some pretty decent houses. One part that contributes to the ghetto-ness is the fact that you have to cross a street, but that gives it character!

Golfing in the ghetto. I love it. Avon is perhaps the most fun golf course in the city. It’s extremely cheap for 18 holes and a cart, a deal you can’t beat. When I first when to play there, admittedly I was a little worried. You go through some pretty run-down parts of the city before you get there, but magically, once you arrive everything switches over again. The course itself is fairly well kept up. I’ve only had one day where it was what I’d call unplayable, and it wasn’t the courses fault. That said, if you’re looking for a true challenge, look elsewhere. Avon has no par 5s and most of the par 4s are reachable from the tee box. So if you want to bring out the big guns, you can sometimes overdrive the green. Believe it. Avon is really what par 3 courses should be. Long enough to give your irons a bit of a workout, but short enough that you can bang out 18 holes in less than 3 hours. That’s another great thing about Avon, it’s rarely busy. I’ve never really had to call for a tee time, you can just show up and they’ll get you on. Also, they have this choice cardboard stand-up sign of Billy Dee Williams hocking Colt 45 malt liquor. Someday, I promise you that sign WILL be mine. Probably the only problem with the course is the driving range. The range has you hitting up hill, and the tee box area is far away from the club house. It’s really rather separate from the course. That’s a bit of an issue. For one, you’re not getting an accurate measure of your hits, and two, it makes getting there a bit of a pain. Still, Avon is my go-to course when I want to get a quick 18 in before work. If you get to know the club house people, they’ll start cutting you deals, too. So break out your clubs! It’s time to play!
