Walked by here yesterday, they are out of business.

A friend of mine once said«How can you F up a Gyros?» Well, time after time this place does and increasingly in worse fashion. I don’t think their spit works properly so they must shave off the Gyros and cook it on the grill every time. This leaves the Gyros tasteless so I am guessing they have to jazz it up with olive oil. One is left with tasteless meat covered in greasy olive oil. No thanks. I am done giving this place chances which is really sad since up until a year or two ago it was quite good. This place closed a few days before Christmas with no warning or explanation and has not reopened since.

I work down the street and have been ordering from there for years. The old owners were great. Ever since someone else took over the whole place has gone down hill. We have given them a few tries but its just a bigger disappointment every time. Today I ordered a tuna melt. It was cold and hard. There should be no reason for that considering we are 1 block away. Not only that, but I had the biggest pieces of celery in there that you could choke on and the cheese wasn’t even melted. Someone else ordered a salad and it is way smaller and more expensive than before. We also had no utensils and napkins with our delivery. That was our last attempt ordering there.

Stopped in on a whim last Saturday to give them a try for the first time in years. At first entry I could tell the place has new owners and it looks to be getting a bit run down, no worries the times are tough for small business all over and if you let the décor suffer and the product is still good, so be it. I chose their«steerbuger» with no onions. It is a two patty burger with bacon & cheese. Pretty standard fare, not bad, the meat was tasty and at least for $ 5 you go filled up. I was the only walk in customer, but they had at least two pick up orders while I was waiting so I guess the are doing ok. The new owners must be middle eastern since they have added some hummus and a falafel to the menu.

I only order for delivery and really only two things: Greek salad and Italian beef. The salad is very good. I could go crazy for their dressing — it’s nothing much — some red wine vinegar, oil, and oregano I suppose, but it’s so sour and I LOVE sour!!! The italian beef is one of the best I’ve had. For me it’s usually all about the gravy(I get it juicy plus juice on the side) and theirs is just perfect!!!

I went here the other day for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak(minus the mushrooms) which was delicious. The meat tasted like it might have been gyro meat(so yummy) with onions, peppers, cheese and a creamy sauce. The sandwich was sizable for the price. The service was quick and friendly. The menu is huge enough for anyone to find something they like. My only complaint is that it seems to be a high school hang out with too much PDA and really loud talking/random noises. I know this is not the places fault… but be forewarned. I think I am going to start ordering the food to go…

If Jefferson Park had a «Saved by the Bell» spot, this place would be it. Décor is bleh. Outdated, early 90’s. All that’s missing are pictures of Michael Jordan jump shots. Unless… there are already pictures there? Hmm… i think there just may be some Chicago Bulls memorabilia from the Golden times… I always get the philly chicken or philly cheesesteak with fries. Good bread. Good seasoning. Nice flavor. Not a heavy greasy brick. Crinkle cut fries are a plus for me. Not super oily. It keeps its hot, steamy potato texture that way. I’m a fan. There’s a lot on the menu and not nearly as suspicious like other hole in the walls that have faded yellow glowing wall menus with missing letters and roaches crawling out of the plastic, and food that’s been packed away from God knows when. Clean. Friendly. Fast. Bunch of pluses in my book.

Fun note about Steers: They have plaques of sports figures hung above the counter – Bill Cartwright, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Mike Ditka and… Dikembe Mutumbo? Huh? Where’s the Cos for a game of «One of These Things Is Not Like the Other»? That reminds me of a great story told by my friend who went to Georgetown law school, about a night several years ago when Mutumbo walked into a campus bar and held court… well I’ll leave it at that. Anyway, I came here for a chocolate malt, but I’m not sure if she heard me right. If the malt powder was there, it was very faint. But the milkshake was very good, great chocolate flavor and perfect thickness. And only $ 2.80! If they’d put the right amount of malt powder in there, it might have been near perfect.

I had lunch at Steers. I had the Hot Dog Special(2 Hot Dogs, Fries, and Drink). The hot dogs were good and the bun was fresh and soft. They tasted like they were Vienna brand. The fries were my favorite type, crinkle cut. It is getting harder to find places that serve crinkle cut fries, I am glad I found one. The reason I have put a lower rating on the place is because of the interior. It was clean inside, but very dated. There will be an increase in the rating if they fix up the interior. There is very dated wallpaper. The worst part is all of the sports pictures are badly faded. Aside from the bad looking interior I thought the food was good. I will return again and try some of the other offerings. There is a lot of choices on the menu.
