I had almost giving up on Jiu Jitsu until I found South Loop BJJ recently. Chuong is the head instructor and his explanation and techniques are easy to understand and follow. He will also stay after class to answer specific questions. I sense Choung has strong passion for the sport and that vibe pushes everyone to train harder. Facility is spacious with plenty of room to change and stretch out. The mats are very clean which is important since we spend 90% of our time on the floor. South Loop BJJ is an awesome gym for anyone that wants to learn bjj, self-defense or just to want to get in shape.

Can’t say enough about this place. The instructor Chuong is «top caliber» not only as a teacher of BJJ but as a person. The students in class are great guys, humble and helpful. I feel very fortunate to be part of this team.

Was in town for a company trip. Love the teaching style. Class starts off with a set of bjj related warm ups like shrimping. Then we actually do some stretching. Of all the bjj gym I been to, none of them did any stretching. Next we do a set of technique sequences. I learned a good half dozen techniques. It was very detailed. We went through most if not all the possibilities of the technique. They show you what works, how to make it work and what doesn’t. Here I have absolutely no question because the teaching was so good. Most other bjj gyms only go through one or 2 technique. Sometimes they even show you a very complicated and long move at once without breaking it down. I’m usually left confused and can never make it work during live sparring. Then we did some positional sparring which again most gyms lack. As common with all bjj gyms we end with live rolling/sparring/randori. I love the curriculum and teaching style. Imo all bjj gyms should teach like this. Would totally make this my gym if I get the chance to come back. They also have an awesome thick and soft tatami mat. Disclaimer: I’m comparing this gym to other gyms from my hometown(not Chicago) that I experienced. I have no experience of other gyms in Chicago.

I’m really glad this place opened up in the south loop. I had been looking for a good BJJ place near my home and then I found South Loop Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Imazaki Dojo. The dojo is spacious and clean. The instructor Chuong is very experienced, detailed, and patient with beginners. He’s constantly teaching me ways to improve my skills. Classes are usually small so there’s a lot of individualized attention/mat time and all of the students there are nothing short of professional. Conveniently located. Great instructor. Highly recommended!!!

Whether you’re brand new to BJJ or already an experienced grappler, South Loop BJJ has something to offer students of all levels. Beginners can greatly benefit from the individual attention afforded by the small class sizes. An emphasis on both technique and positional sparring ensures that students get the most out of their training session. Chuong is a detailed instructor, often spending extra time after class to answer questions about the day’s techniques. The culture is down-to-earth and welcoming — no egos here!

South Loop Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is located in the Imazaki Karate Dojo space, with classes running on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Chuong is a highly skilled, detailed oriented instructor with tons of experience. He’s very dedicated to his students and will invest a lot of time answering questions before, during, and after class. Classes are usually on the small side, so you get a lot of mat time and personalized attention. Highly recommended!
