This theater is truly a hidden gem. My friend and I loved It’s A wonderful Life, and past shows have been just as good. With the intimate setting, every seat is good. The performers are always quite talented, and they serve free treats in their charming parlor!

I saw The Subject Was Roses here last Summer. My boyfriend’s good friend was staring in the play so we showed our support. This was a first visit for both of us so we had no idea what to expect. The theater itself is set up in a condo in the Lakeview area. There are risers that are built into the would-be dining area, the whole place holds around 30 people max(I’m guessing). At first the whole thing is a bit odd(in a good way) and a bit confusing. I have been to plenty of theater performances but they were at Chicago Theater, Oriental, etc… not someone’s home. Once the production started though, all confusion was gone. I couldn’t get enough! Everything is so intimate and personal and so extremely creative. There was a point where they utilized the kitchen and made toast and the smells were amazing… not something you would experience at Chicago Theater that’s for sure! The hosts were also very accommodating, offering free beverages and homemade cookies(which were delish!). The play itself was very good and we were bummed when it was over… we wanted more! I definitely would be back to see another production at Oil Lamp Theater.
