Tank is good but there are several places in Chicago with better phở than Tank. Nha Hang Viet Nam is better than those places. It’s a smaller restaurant than most of the other places on Argyle and surrounding area, but the food is big time. Additionally, the prices are a lot more reasonable than some of the other places and the owner is really nice. My new go-to for Vietnamese food!

This place is very very small. I think there are only 9 tables(approx. 40 seats). The inside looks very warm and welcoming. As you walk in, you will notice how lively it is. Perhaps the TV in the corner is always on? Perhaps because of the icicle Christmas ornaments on the walls? I’m not quite sure. We arrived pretty late one night. There were over 20 of us. We basically filled up the entire area as a few tables were already occupied when we arrived. The man there who appeared to be the owner was extremely friendly with the clients, including our family. He proudly told us everything on the menu was good and that anything bad would be free of charge. Such confidence! The man was correct. All of us were happy with what we ordered. I tried my nephew’s bun rieu and it was lovely. The crab soup was good and also were the nuoc mam chicken wings and banh xeo(Vietnamese crepes). Their smoothies were also good. Super fresh! My favorite was the jackfruit smoothie. So… Why four stars and not five? The bathroom was dirty. The service was slow, which was understandable since it was truly a large group. Not only that, there was only one waitress. Nevertheless, I would expect her to bring the correct dishes to the people who actually ordered them. She got confused multiple times. I ordered wings as appetizers but got them last, just a few minutes before my family was about to get up and leave after having paid the bill. Another complaint is the soup. It was delicious but I thought the name was deceiving. It said«sup mang cua»(asparagus and crab soup) on the menu but there was no asparagus. In addition, the chicken wings were tiny. They weren’t even complete wings. When I think of wings, I think of the drumette, the wingette and the tip. Those three parts make up a chicken wing. We only got the drumette. I was looking forward to the best part– the tip(which unfortunately I did not get). Overall, I highly recommend this place. The owner is outgoing and the food is amazing and authentic. We will definitely be back the next time we’re in the area.

The food is amazing and full of flavor. Staff and owner are very friendly and welcoming. This was our first time there and the waiter took his time to explain the dishes. Will definitely come back, highly recommended.

What a charming place. The main draw is the friendly and welcoming vibe you get as soon as you walk into this family owned establishment. No one in our party of 4 was hungry when we can for dinner but I just could not let a visit to Chicago go by without stopping for Vietnamese food. We ordered grilled pork chop over rice, sliced grill pork over rice, duck salad, and 2 fruit smoothies(strawberry-banana and mango). The grilled pork chop was thick, nicely charred, with a nice meaty taste. The other pork dish was thinly sliced and well flavored. My duck salad consisted of boiled duck over a bed of shredded cabbage, shallots, mint, and came with a yummy sauce. Two big pieces of shrimp chips adorned the plate which my daughter whisked off my plate before I had a chance to snap a picture. :-) The salad was refreshing and satisfying. Service was from a very nice young man who was attentive without being obtrusive. At the end of the meal, the owner came over to our table and asked with the sweetest smile, «Who wants ice cream?» The complimentary dessert was certainly a nice ending to our lovely meal! I will be back the next time I visit Chicago.

I’m a big fan of Nha Hang and Le’s Phở — my two favorite phở spots in Argyle. Nha Hang has a huge menu, so there’s plenty to choose from. I usually get phở or vermicelli, but I decided to try the rice noodle soup this time. I can’t remember the name of the dish, but I remember it was #67. It had wontons in it, so it tasted more like a Chinese dish rather than a Vietnamese dish. It was still good though! I especially love it here because they always give you complimentary vanilla ice cream topped with crushed peanuts. Definitely a must-try!

My kids finally dragged me out to this cute place. The food is great and very economical. It IS like eating at your folks place as stated in other reviews. Just off the restroom there was a trombone case standing next to the kitchen area. I noticed a circular power saw under the chest by the front window. Quirky and novel in a good way. And yeah, the complimentary vanilla ice cream dessert topped with chopped peanuts was a really nice finishing touch.

I used to only go to Uptown Phở but decided to try this place. Nha Hang Viet Nam was pretty good but I still prefer the bun bo hue from Uptown, which had better flavors in the broth, better textured noodles, better meat. Also tried the fried whole shrimp here, it was ok. A little too sweet and the shells are just not fried enough to be eaten whole. When I was eating here, a group of homeless people started hanging out in front of the restaurant and some times walked into the restaurant and was aggressively asking for money. Felt a little unsafe.

My favorite place to go in Argyle. Been here twice and each time has been amazing. The menu here is extensive — it has your everyday phở to traditional Vietnamese dishes. The bahn xeo here is huge and extra crispy. I love the fried chicken wings with tamarind(?) sauce — the portions I’ve gotten from dish have been spotty however. The catfish is delicious but the portion is kind of small. Phở is great as well. I love how they give free ice cream! It’s such a simple addition but it completely changes how you feel at the end of the meal. The owner also is very nice and energetic!

Nha Hang serves up some of the best phở along Argyle. The broth, although not as heady as others, tastes wonderful and homemade, the noodles still have a little chew, and the vegetables and herbs spring with freshness. I especially love that they give you a healthy amount of sawtooth coriander. Condiments abound at the table, but you won’t need much, if any. The meat, whether it be chicken or round of beef, could be more tender, but the other elements compensate enough. I usually pass on the free vanilla ice cream with crushed peanuts, but it’s a tasty perk.

One of the better Vietnamese Restaurants I’ve been to in Argyle. The phở and the Bahm Mi tasted authentic, price was reasonably cheap compared to all the other restaurants in the area, the broth was on point. The biggest issue i had was the lack of any music or ambiance as all i really heard while eating my food was the two owners talking to each other in their native tongue. Overall, I’d suggest this place if one is looking for a small hole in the wall style restaurant and want to save money.

I’m not actually a fan of much Vietnamese food, but between the vast menu and the cozy atmosphere of Nha Hang Viet Nam, I can’t imagine anyone not being charmed by this place. There is something for everyone here, and at incredibly fair prices. Hot tea and ice cream often show up as nice surprise bookends to your meal, and the service is so kind that you feel like they’ve known you for years. It makes me happy knowing this place is a beloved neighborhood staple, as it so deserves to be.

GROSS. DIRTY. Avoid if you care about your health and cleanliness. My second time there. Enjoyed it first time. Then today… Had my spring rolls… was having my Phở, and about to order a sandwich until i saw the owner sitting at a table and cutting his nails with a nail clipper… I tried not to look but i could hear the sound. Then the lady chef sat… and massaged her bare foot. GROSS. How could they do this? I stopped eating my food. Asked for the bill, paid the money and some tip and ran out… On the way to home i thought i was going to vomit… I was so grossed out. They are lucky that i donot want to hurt a mom and pop business, or i would have called Department of Health or whatever they are called. They seem like real nice people… but come on – that kinda shit should have no room in restaurants. Get your act together.

(3.75 stars) Nha Hang Viet Nam feels like home cooking. It’s served by a mom-and-pop, and it feels a bit like eating in a family member’s strangely decorated dining room. We sampled the catfish cooked in a clay pot(which was tasty, though a fairly small portion compared to their otherwise amply sized dishes), and Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce(perfectly fresh and delicious). The summer rolls were tasty, though the ones we had at Saigon Phở were somehow better — fresher, more flavorful. All in all, NHVN is a good option on Argyle, and very reasonably priced.

After living 2 blocks off of the Argyle stop for a few weeks now, we finally decided to try the local Phở. Argyle Red Line is also referred to as ‘little saigon’ or ‘little vietnam,’ so there is a lot of competition in the area for authentic Vietnamese food. I had personally never tried Phở before, so over the course of my lease here I will likely be trying some other Vietnamese places. As a first test run though, this Restauarant passed easily. The interior of the restaurant feels like my grandma’s kitchen table with asian décor surrounding us. Audio Equipment from the 80’s and a staff that speaks 3% English. Regardless of the décor and accommodations we came to this place to try some authentic Phở, and boy was it delicious. I ordered #36 the medium size original beef phở, while my date ordered chicken phở. The food came out in less than 10 minutes and in front of us was the broth and phở base with beef and noodles. On the side came fresh mint leaves on the stem, a heap of bean sprouts, jalapeños, and limes to add to the Phở. I went all out and added everything I should to be authentic and it hit the spot. The combination of beef broth, lime, noodles, and mint is something I’ve never tasted. But this restaurant gave me a good baseline for what Good Phở tastes like. I will be back her someday again, but first I will have to see how it compares to the other local Phở! [4.0/5.0]

This place is a refreshing discovery that keeps me hopeful for Argyle. Not going to lie, I always defaulted to Tank for phở but it has been lackadaisical at best these past years. Vietnam Restaurant has very good prices(read: cheap, affordable) for the amount of food and service! The owner managed to give us great service, making sure our water was never empty while serving five other tables. The phở had a more gingery taste that gave it a richer taste. UMM and we get free ice cream for dessert? Yes please!

Another addition to my list of approved phở places! Nha Hang Viet Nam is roughly about two blocks from the L stop in Argyle, so it’s easy to get to. It’s small but difficult to miss, and once you step inside, you can’t help but notice the charming and small dining room. I believe this place is run by a local Vietnamese family(family-run places always make me so happy). My friend and I ordered two bowls of phở(I got the medium Phở Viet Nam), an iced coffee, a club soda with lime and the pork and shrimp spring rolls. Everything was excellent. I made fun of my friend for ordering the soda because it legitimately sounded so lame on the menu but it tasted like fresh Sprite(like if Sprite was real: o), and the wedges of lime really made the drink something refreshing and special, perfect for a summer day. The spring rolls were quite big and freshly wrapped, and the sauce we got to dip it in was delicious. I could clearly taste the quality. The coffee was also very thick and strong, but the finish was very smooth. Good stuff. The phở here was very, very good. Immediate wins: tons of condiments for us! I hate it when phở places bring you one plate of condiments for three bowls of phở. But they were very generous and we got fresh branches of basil(on my way to the bathroom, I could see the owner cutting up the branches of basil), ngo cai(another win!!! I haven’t found too many phở places that serve this), lime wedges(not lemon: D), sliced peppers, and a huge pile of crunchy, fresh bean sprouts. The phở itself was delicious — the noodles were soft but chewy and the broth was a light clear, color(always a good sign) and very flavorful. My only complaint would be that the meat was a little tough to chew, but I’m willing to overlook that. They also don’t give you a ton of meat in the medium, so order the large if you’re super hungry. Overall, for the prices, seriously great place. I’m already itching to come back and try some of their other Vietnamese dishes. Come here if you want a more intimate, family-style dining experience over Tank! P. S. Free dessert, yay!

It gets pretty authentic here. The food hits your tummy like home. I especially come here for mi quang and canh chua. Once it hits the table… SILENCE. Service and cleanliness is decent. The restaurant does need a facelift though. It looks so 1980s.
