Very tasty tempura! I got the Obento Special which was about $ 12.50 for miso soup, pickled cucumbers, mushrooms and beans, and the actual obento(Rice, tempura vegetables, peanut spinach, wasabi, ginger, 4 pieces of sushi roll, radish, and meat of choice). The fish was a bit over done, like broiled to death so it was hard to eat. Another point of improvement is the tea we ordered which was really weak. However, I was satisfied with this meal, there was enough food, and it’s a nice place for lunch. Our waiter was also very quick and attentive.

My favorite sushi place to either go with family or friends to dine-in or to order and eat it at home. The maki rolls are very rich in taste and I love the texture too. My favorite maki rolls are: dragon, roberto’s special and red eye maki. I like to order extra Roberto’s sauce and eat it next day with pasta or rice. Delicious. In my opinion you get the best bang for your buck when it comes to sushi at Midori.

I love their interior décor. They have private Japanese rooms with a table and no chairs. You sit on the floor in a private room. Good place to bring someone special and have someone to cater to you while you enjoy some good company.

The amount of food you get for the price is really decent. Pretty traditional feel. In the combination you seriously get a lot of food. My only complaint, and for all I know it was a one time thing, was that there was way too much wasabi on our Nigiri. I like wasabi, don’t get me wrong but I want to taste the fish and not just the wasabi. Other than that, the cuts of fish were generous and I would go back.

My favorite sushi restaurant in Chicago. I’ve been coming to this restaurant since I moved here from California ten years ago. Really all I can say is go try this restaurant. Roberto will chat with you if you sit at the sushi bar. He will remember you the next time you return and you will return. Roberto special and red eye are two of my favorites. Their spicy mayo is addictive. Veggie folks great veggie options, sweet potato I crave along with the mushroom. A must have after a great workout. This is not the place to go for looks, this is the place to go for great sushi. If you have a big party ask for the private room. Most comfortable seating in a Japanese restaurant from here to California.

Absolutely the«Worst» Shashimi I have ever had. The KIKA stand at my local grocery tops this by 5 times what I received, and it costs half of what I received. Shame on you! I ate the entire 9 pieces, shirking at every one, however @ $ 20.00?! I wasn’t going to pay for it, and not eat it. I should have sent it back right away. The tempura dinner my Mother ordered was well prepared, however at $ 19.00?! was way overpriced for 4 shrimp, and veggies. The tea was nice, and the waitress was sweet, and humble, I felt bad telling them, however, I was thoroughly disappointed with the sashimi. It felt like the chef took one look at me, and decided he could get away with pre-sliced pieces, pre– prepped dry items(YUK!) and shoddy rice. It was just like something that had been sitting in the refrigerator for three days from take-out. Writing this now, I am even more offended thinking about how I just got completely ripped-off for something I could order from a grocery store for less than half the $ 50.00 hard earned money I just wasted here. Thank god the company I was with was great. Fortunately I will not be coming back, much less sending anyone else to have an equal disappointing experience. I suggest you explain to the chef, not to judge a book by its cover, and serve the BEST that you have to offer every time. However, if this is your best than I think you need to take a look elsewhere. Perhaps run down to your local Whole foods, pick up some KIKA togo sushi, and learn from there. Too bad, cause I really wanted to like this place.

This place is one of the few Japanese restaurant I’ve come to love. All of their dishes are superb! I love the variety of their maki’s, rolls and sushi. They have the best katsudon I’ve ever tasted. I always thought that NY and CA will always have the best Japanese restaurant since they are near the ocean. I was dead wrong. There is one here in IL and the best thing about it is that it’s near my house. The price is a bit pricey but it’s worth it with the quality of food that they serve you. It’s good for groups since they allow people to drink inside. It’s not really good for kids because the space is a bit small. But, if you go by yourself it’s all cool. Since you can at the bar while you eat your sushi. Overall this place is another place that people should try if they want it eat some good Japanese food.

I live within walking distance and have always loved Midori’s. I’m not sure if it’s a stage in in my life but I don’t dine as often anymore. However, when I do, I tend to have high expectations and I tend to be disappointed when a place pretends to be something it’s not. Midori’s is just one of those places you can rely on for a consistently great dining experience. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the most luxurious dining experience or always the easiest menu to chose from. But it is tasty, and you get the sense that you are somewhere where food is prepared with care and pride. This means a great deal to me and to most people that have less of an opportunity to dine out. All of the food here is authentically Japanese and the experience is as close to it as you can get for the price. The portions are generous and the staff is as friendly as you invite them to be. This place is a real gem and deserving of 5 stars for providing me with great food and service over the last 15 years.

I love Midori! I’ve been coming here since I was little girl. My parents used to come here for family dinners and we’d rent one of their private rooms. Their private rooms are like those you would imagine a Japanese tea room would look like. You have to take your shoes off to get in, your feet go into a small crawl space under the table and the floor chairs have backings so you can lean back after you’re stuffed full of sushi. The doors are those sliding rice paper doors, and the servers would come in with their kimono’s to take your order. It brings back so many great memories, and the place hasn’t changed since then. The sushi chef is still Chef Robert who makes the best spicy tuna hand rolls ever!!! These are my all time favorite!!! it’s his secret recipe and I have yet to decipher it for my own personal gain. He would never tell me either. If you really want the burn-your-mouth spicy tuna, ask him and he’ll make it for you. But i’m warning you… you may want to keep a side of ice cream on hand or miso soup because his spice is out of this world! If you want the group room, make a reservation in advance. I didn’t and we had a group of 6 sit in the main dining room. I’m pretty sure we were loud for the couples that were sitting around us. Other than their sushi, i like their steak katsu. The breaded steak is so crunchy, and crispy! Yum! If you want to get away from the uppity, snobby, over hyped Japanese restaurants you need to check this place out!

This place is pricy for mediocre Japanese food. I tried a tuna roll and some shrimp tempura roll that had a few slices of cucumber, a ton of rice, adorned with avocado on the top. It was so average. Nothing special. I couldn’t even finish my rolls because it tasted so bland. And these two rolls came out to be roughly $ 20 without tip. My boyfriend ordered one of the dinners, I believe he got the beef dinner. It came with a side of rice and a lot of tempura. The tempura was good, but the beef wasn’t very tasty IMHO. It was more like Korean bulgogi; I’m not a big fan of bulgogi. I don’t see myself coming back, but if there’s one thing I recommend, it’s the dinners or combinations because you get a lot.

I like this place don’t get me wrong, I just wish I could give it 3.5 stars because I can’t give it a 4. I think it is a good sushi place but find their rolls have too much rice in them and overwhelming it with too much sauce. They serve plenty of food for the price so you’re getting a good deal from your order but the maki rolls are served with so much sauce that it takes away from the taste and texture of the seafood in the roll. I ordered the Green Line make and really enjoyed the shrimp and wasabi-based topiko on top but could not taste the eel because of the sauce. I like that they serve a nice green ginger salad and free appetizers with mushroom and green bean salad too so I over ordered and couldn’t finish my dinner. I like their age-tofu but it is not the best I have had, but it’s the most I have had(they served 4 pieces of larger sized tofu pieces) I wouldn’t reorder the gomae, I didn’t like their sauce. I will return however and likely try their tempura, teriyaki, or sukiyaki.

Totally authentic Japanese style sushi house! Warm towels given in the beginning… women wearing kimonos… and excellent sushi! What a gem in North Center Albany Park… The service was super slow tonight. That was very annoying. I felt like I was serving our table. But I do love the place… they just need to work on service speed. Or have more people assisting on a Friday night.

This hidden restaurant is surprisingly okay. The food is decent and well priced for the locale. Sushi and rolls were fair tasting and quickly served. The tempura was light and tasty. Service is pleasant and they are very attentive to families. The overall cleanliness is just okay. Could stand some attention to the décor that look like it hasn’t been wiped down in years. The take out is excellent as a result. It’s great to have this spot in the neighborhood that serves consistently decent food.

Stopped in for a quick dinner, and was not impressed. The restaurant is tucked in between a bunch of Korean businesses. I went at 5 p.m. on a Tuesday, and there were only two other parties. The waittress took our order quickly, and brought out food in a timely manner, bit we ended up waiting another half hour after we were done before she even came out of the back to clear the rest of our plates. The menu is big, with lots of sushi, entrees and noodles. I had some sushi, and was disappointed in the rice. It was very sour, like there was too much vinegar in it. The salad dressing was also sour. I also ordered tempura udon. The vegetable tempura — a sweet potato, two string beans and a zucchini — was good. The shrimp had too much batter on it so the breading was very thick and I could barely taste the shrimp. The noodles themselves were bland. The flavor of the broth was off, almost like the spinach had been soaking in it for too long. The food wasn’t inedible by any means, but something wasn’t quite right about the flavors for the whole meal. I would much rather eat at Renga-Tei, or Katsu if you’re looking to spend a bit more and just order awesome sushi. The biggest plus about this place is that it’s open Tuesday and for lunch, while Renga-Tei(lunch only on weekdays) and Katsu are not.

HANDSDOWNTHEBESTSUSHIINTOWN I didn’t really have an appreciation for sushi until Midori came into my life… My favorites are the Roberto special and the Spicy Shrimp Maki!!! A new, more recent thing I’ve tried is the shrimp salad! Yummy! Ive recommended this place to my friends and they all love it… Thank you Midori for your life changing sushi !!!

One word. ROACHES I’m going to make this review as short as I can, but people need to know this. So my friends decided to take me and my wife out to have sushi for the first time, this was their go-to spot. We all got together on a Wednesday night and headed on over. I was so excited to try sushi especially at this spot I heard so many good things about. Didn’t know what to order so my friends took care of me. A cool thing my friends pointed out was that if you get enough sushi they will place it on a «boat» platter for you.(I’ve uploaded a photo) We were waited on by an older woman who was very, very, very much in a hurry. Unfortunately, she unwittingly played heavily into the«hurry up and buy» stereotype; however, the younger waitresses were a lot more patient and kind. Let’s cut to the chase, The sushi arrived, and everything looked lovely. As we began to eat and as I was conversing with my friends, in the corner of my eye I noticed something move; something that might have been a bug but I did not want to look, as not to ruin the experience for my self and for everyone else at the table. I also thought if it we’re indeed a bug, It was most likely just a fruit fly(less disgusting, but disgusting nevertheless). As we continued to eat and attempted to enjoy our meal. My friend stopped everything and regretfully informed us that he had just spotted a baby roach run out of the inside bottom of the boat to the top of the platter and then back in. (Pirate roaches, I guess) That was it for me. Ruined the meal for me and sadly ruined my first time experience with sushi as well! Since it was a baby roach In the platter(probably more than one) there most definitely is an infestation of roaches in the kitchen/back area of this establishment. After we informed them to what had just happened, they took the boat from us and went to clean it in the back and serve us new sushi on top of the same boat. I had to run back and tell them, «Please! No boat this time». (No need for a Roach Pirates of the Caribbean Part 2!) Needless to say, I and a few others pretty much lost our appetite. Totally disgusting. At the end of the night, we attempted to receive compensation due to the epic fail roach riddled sushi boat, but Roberto(the owner, OR on ownership level) gave us the biggest hard time and STILL made us pay for it all! After pleading our case he lowered it down to 25% off; we then decided this wasn’t good enough as a bug in the food is cause for the #1 rule in american dining being broken. After begging and pleading some more he finally lowered it down to 50%. Eat here if you like bugs and roaches potentially dancing in your food and want to be rushed.

I dream about Roberto’s Special. I don’t live in Chicago anymore, but I always stop by whenever I’m back. The flavors are amazing and super inventive. I’ve lived all over the US, but Midori is still the #1 sushi place in my book. Just know that the neighborhood is sketchy, so don’t leave anything important in your car. I’ve unfortunately had stuff stolen when I went to the restaurant a few years back. But it still won’t stop me from visiting again.

Super fresh, superb sushi. The chef is inventive but there are also classics. I really think it’s some of the best sushi in the city. The space itself is charming and there are cute little rooms where you can have a big party for some privacy. Wait staff was courteous and attentive.

My favorite place to go to for simple, delicious sushi. Plus, I’m a sucker for restaurants that present sushi to you on sushi boats and have the tatami rooms(where you get to sit on the floor with the low tables). And at the end of your meal, your wallet will thank you as well!

omg how did i not already review midori? I had a birthday party here once years ago. Great venue for a larger group! Their party room is for karaōke with a huge assortment of songs. There’s a mini stage and disco lights. Larger number of comfy seating and tables, and a bar in the back! I’d really recommend for a cool night out with friends. Anyway, on to food. My staples: spicy tuna and roberto special. While the menu isn’t super plentiful, Their freshness and flavors are on point. You are guaranteed to get stuffed! Sushi comes with a ginger dressing salad, miso soup, and some other sides of tofu and mushrooms with beans covered in a mildly spicy sauce. In the dining area there’s also an authentic sliding door room for larger groups. Check out the pics! Great ambience for larger groups and fun to sit in. Check out the huuuuge sushi boats they serve on! Look for my pics. And yes, they do mochi for dessert! Mmmm… The owner is absolutely great and I’m surprised still remembers me! Such a great local spot…
