Yay for ginger beer and African products!
This is like my home away from home. After dating so many Nigerians, I started to gain an admiration for all things West African and Makola is the place to go. From spices to rice to drinks there’s all sorts of African goodies you won’t find in other stores in the area. They even have a pretty decent selection of Nollywood movies.
They are a bit slow to actually ring you up and the big dude in the front playing security guard can be intimidating but he’s actually pretty helpful. Its definitely a gem in Uptown and even if you aren’t African, its definitely a place to check out.

One of Uptown’s great little African markets, with all sorts of produce and spices to make your West African stew taste it’s best. You think I’m kidding? Well, I don’t cook West African stews, but my vegetarian sancochos and other West Indian and Central American recipes often require no more than a visit to places like Makola, and with its great prices, I save too. There’s also a great assortment of drinks popular in these parts of the world, including coconut water, ginger beer, and plenty of brands of (non-​alcoholic) malt beverages.
