This place is amazingly bargain worthy! Kung pow chicken was phenomenal and I had enough for four servings at least for $ 7??? Love it

I was so disappointed. I had hoped that I had found something like a diamond in the rough, but it actually turned out to be something like fool’s gold, for example: I ordered a seafood combo dish. There were only three shrimp, two small scallops and fake crab. There were lots of onions, and green peeper and sauce — the taste was fair, however for $ 8 — it would have been nice to receive actual seafood like the menu stated. The egg rolls tasted like it was«fresh» frozen. My daughter ordered the fried rice, which remains in the frigerator to this day. The fried wontons were tasty, but they weren’t supposed to be the entire meal… I and daughter three were left wanting. Very disapponiting

Ordered the chicken egg foo young for pickup. Service was quick, but I got home and started eating… And found a hair in my food. Like literally it was cooked into the egg foo young. I called and they offered to replace the meal, but it was my first time there and I’m not into giving second chances about stuff like that. I realized later that when I went in no one had a hair bonnet on.

This Chinese restaurant is just what I was looking for. I moved from the West coast a little while back and if you’ve ever had Chinese food in the west, then you know it’s not the same as East and Midwest Chinese food. I wanted some real egg foo young and I found it here.

Their fried rice is disgusting! I ordered the vegetable fried rice and there was nothing healthy about it. Their fried rice is drenched and dripping in oil. there is so much oil in their rice you think you would think you are eating rice oil soup.. On top of that the oil taste burned. They probably recycle their used oil and use some cheap vegetable oil. I tried it once and threw it out because the amount of oil is so overbearing and unnecessary. If you are health conscious at all don’t order the fried rice, hence the word fried. If you are not health conscious, don’t order the fried rice hence the word oily. Or if you do be prepared for the excessive oil.

I have been to this family-owned restaurant a lot lately. This tiny place is clean and cozy, the young lady at the front is friendly. But these are not the only reasons why I give 5 stars —- IT’S ALLABOUTFOOD! Tasty foods are served in generous portions of great value. Dinner combo with fried rice and egg roll for $ 7 is the best deal around town. My recommendation is the Mongolian Beef, fresh and full of flavor, it reminds me of mom’s cooking. And you can never go wrong with the 3-piece fried whole chicken wings for only $ 4.50. Wings are well seasoned, appetitively fried to order. They taste so good that you won’t find wings better than these in any fast food chain. I also notice that they are serving smoothie made with fresh fruit now, which is a big improvement since I used to complain about not having deserts. Definitely will bring my kids next time. For good quality food and low price like this, it should totally be banned by law. Or else nobody can ever stop me from engorging.

Crap. I was really hoping this would be my go-to resource for a large helping of the non-authentic cheap Extra Fine Pork Chop Suey Chinese food of my non-Chinese childhood. Yeah, I know chop suey is not real Chinese food, but I do love it. The crispy water chestnuts. The moist bean sprouts that pop when you chew them. The savory small pieces of shredded pork. The fluffy white rice. Sometimes it’s just the thing you need for a night in, watching movies. This stuff had none of that. It was desultory, overcooked and bland. And a large order wasn’t even that large! That reminds me of a joke, but I will not digress. The rice portion was very small — and c’mon, that’s the least expensive thing in food of this type. The«Crab» Rangoon was more accurately called«Cream Cheese Rangoon». So, enough of that. The Egg rolls were bland and just overwhelmingly. .. meh. It’d be a stretch for them to reach«mediocre». Hot n’ Sour soup. This is my white whale. How I test the waters of Chinese restaurants, because I love this stuff. Am still mourning the demise of the best Hot n’ Sour soup EVER from the red-painted filthy place that used to be on Bryn Mawr, but *sigh* back to our story. This was, most assuredly, not that. Viscous brown water with a few shreds of what once was vegetable matter. Barely any of those weird black mushroom things that I love. No pork. One or two small tofu cubes. I’m used to having to add a little vinegar to this sort of soup, because I like it VERY sour, but even a glug of delicious Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar didn’t help this swill. Do you ever have an experience where the food was so lackluster you wish you would have just skipped dinner and stayed a little hungry? Yeah, that was my thought. And I lobbied hard for this place, ‘cos I was in the mood for a li’l cheep chop suey. So, I also had that guilt of picking a bad restaurant. I prefer not to repeat that. The food we got was cheap, under $ 20. And my lovely manfriend, who went to retrieve it, reported on the staff, mostly on laptops, being indifferent to customers, as others have noted. And the place was empty. I’m thinking you better step up your game, GCE. The two of us won’t be fooled again.

I was in the mood for hot soup on a cold day in Chicago, so I looked for a nearby Chinese restaurant. I came up with this one and was pretty satisfied with the result. I tried the egg drop soup with a side of steamed vegetables. The vegetables where seasoned very well and the soup met a good standard. For nearby convenience and good tasting soup, I will differently be back again sometime soon.

Very run down, pretty empty. The service was quick. About 10 minutes from the order. I was disappointed to be served in styrofoam with sauce packets and a plastic fork. The front of house spoke very limited english. The bubble tea was great, smaller than it should’ve been for 4.25. I would expect at least 16 ounces. The food is from frozen. I found weird chunks in the rice. Enough to feed 2, but I would prefered to microwave frozen Chinese food from Walmart, it would’ve been better and half the price. The wifi was good. That’s it. My recommendation for the owners, have fewer staff members sitting around yelling at eachother(do you pay employees to sit on laptops and do homework or should they attend to customers?) cook fresh food, and make sure the front of house is easier to understand. I paid for sitdown service. If you want a tip, attend to the customer.

I am a student at Loyola University of Chicago and since this is right off the Red Line I eat here their food quite frequently. First off, the food is great; my personal favorites are their sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and crab rangoons. Second, the prices are awesome especially for the amount of food you get. Service is hit or miss in the actual establishment which is why I knocked off a star. However, delivery has never been an issue!

Are you kidding me… Some delivery driver calls and starts yelling at us because he says he’s at our apartment and we aren’t answering(because that makes sense… Right? NO.) What made sense is when we told you 37 times at least that you were clearly not at the right house… You thought we were lying and got more angry… Well here is your ONE star and we will NEVER order from you EVER again. Learn to respect your customers… We weren’t hiding from you… We were actually waiting to eat. We could have done without you yelling at us. Best of luck. I will warn every single person I can to not go here because of crude, rude and disrespectful the jerk delivery driver was.

Service has really gone down. Young man at the counter hardly acknowledges customers(I noticed this while waiting). He also stared me down while I was reading the menu even though I asked for a second to figure out what I wanted. Then he was on his cellphone. I also noticed their menu is shorter and they had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for the vegetable kow. Another HUGEPROBLEM is that their front door is wide open and sooooo many bugs are flying around inside. Makes me wonder how much is in my food. I haven’t tried anything I ordered yet, but my hopes aren’t too high. Very sad because I used to enjoy eating here.

Danger! My partner and I ordered food from this place on Wednesday and have had intestinal problems every day since. Proceed with great caution.

This place has amazing pot stickers. Everything else is really hit or miss, and/or overly greasy. There is something great about the pot stickers though and a combo meal for under 7.00 can’t be beat. Stick to the delivery options, there is a gumball machine in there that rubs me the wrong way.

(I actually give this place a 1.5, but that’s not an option, so I rounded.) The first time I ordered from them, I was fairly disturbed by the appearance of the joint when picking up my food. I tried to put it to the back of my mind and thought the food’s quality might be worth it. Sadly, it didn’t make up for anything. Except a LARGE pool of grease that was left in my soy sauce. By the time I was done eating, I think there was more grease left in my sauce than actual sauce. I like to give everyone the benefit that there are«off» days. So I ordered from them once more to observe the consistency. Same deal. The food was absolutely too greasy. And this is coming from someone that absolutely LOVES the occasional sh*tty Chinese takeout. The food I had ordered the second time was a little too much for my stomach to handle, so I put it in the fridge knowing that some takeout tastes better the next day. WRONG. It was worse than I could have ever imagined. The grease had stuck all of the leftovers together in a way that nothing I did resolved the massive glob of «food.» Not even rice helped. I ended up throwing it away and will never order from them again. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with enjoying greasy Chinese food, but that food was just not right. Not even the«good price» made up for the lack of quality.(Shame on previous Unilocal reviewers for leading me to believe that the price was worth it.) If you decide that this is the place for you, just do yourself one favor and DONOT eat IN that restaurant. It be sketchy as Hell.

We’re expanding a bit outside our regular Chinese places and seeing what else is out there, so we decided to order from GCE and see what happened. We gave the appetizers a good go with pot-stickers, egg rolls and crab rangoon. The best out of the three were the crab rangoon. Very nice flavor, well fried. My wife is strangely particular about her pot-stickers, and she said they were pretty decent. The egg roll was so-so. had a unique flavor that I couldn’t place. I think we’d do better to stick with the rangoon and pot stickers from now on. The chicken lo-mein was. untraditional. to say the least. We’ll skip it from now on. Mongolian beef actually had thicker slices of beef which was a nice change, but flavor was lacking. a tad bit bland overall. It was also smothered in slices of peppers and onions which is great if you like those, but I was going for the beef so they just mainly got in the way. We also ordered a small Szechwan combo to try it, and that turned out pretty well. had a nice strong flavor to it. Not sure if I’d get the shrimp version, but chicken /beef might be pretty good. It was a slightly above-average order, I’d give it another try and change up the dishes and see how it turns out again before making a final call on GCE.

Hmm, initially I thought I’d made a mistake when I walked in since where you’d expect to find tables it was just open floor space with just a couple very small booths near the far wall and one table near the front window. Then you throw in the bad lighting and I was feeling like I should run since it was striking me as very rundown and I didn’t trust eating their food. Lastly I couldn’t help but notice the very bad lighting that was making the empty space look even more depressing. Luckily I took a closer look and realized that even with all the negative first impressions the floor was clean and looking back into the kitchen area it looked very clean too. My next observation was the menu. It was pretty much typical Chinese takeout type foods, but the best part was the prices. For something like $ 4.75 you could get a lunch special that included fried rice and an eggroll. I got a lunch special to go and got a big meal and a can of Coke and only walked out $ 6.05 poorer. Not a bad deal at all. As far as the flavors go it was a bit of a roller coaster ride. None of the food tasted any different than other Chinese takeout places, but thankfully they didn’t overcook the eggroll like so many places do so that was very enjoyable. I had the sweet and sour chicken and it was good. My only complaint about it was that one of the pieces was literally still very cold when I bit into it. Like cold enough to be like I’d just pulled it out of a fridge. The fried rice was good with no complaints and also nothing to get excited about. So the bottom line is if I’m in the area and looking for a cheap lunch time meal I’ll stop in again. Well worth the very affordable prices they are charging.

Best egg foo young and other«gwhy loh» style Chinese dishes at rock bottom prices for 20 years+. You would not believe how much you get for $ 20. And don’t forget to get your FREE egg rolls or fried rice with a decent size order. But make sure you wear your bullet proof vest cause this place is in the hood. PS — the egg drop soup for $ 2.75 is the deal of Edgewater. My picky eater kids were fighting for the last cup and hen licking the bowl clean.
