I always said never get Mexican food east of the the Mississippi but this place changed everything. I live in LA and this place is a taste of home. The pastor is the call and both salsas are amazing. Can’t wait to come back.

A hidden gem in Uptown and a must stop if you are in the mood for some good street tacos. I reccomend the Al Pastor tacos. Nothing fancy just solidly good!

Yes! Al Pastor to die for. Their two taco meal is affordable and delicious. Much better than the Mexican restaurant around the corner, despite the limited menu. Yummers!

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this place! The best tacos that I’ve had in a really long time! I found it accidentally when waiting to meet friends around the corner at Green Mill. I love that they have ground beef tacos. The salsa was hot and amazing. Love it!

In recent months, the quality and trimming of the meat has been rapidly going downhill. Steak constantly has huge chunks of connective tissue, likewise with the al pastor. Often not grilled fresh, but just scooped from a bucked of(im assuming) pre-cooked extra chunks from previous orders. Everything else is great(fresh tortillas and ingredients, great horchata, fast service) but the quality of meat is really disappointing.

Anyone who lives in uptown or has gone to a show at the Riviera knows about this great little spot. It’s a classic hole in the wall located on Lawrence just a little west of Broadway. The food: It’s the entire reason to come here. Delicious burritos, tasty tacos, salty chips and solid guacamole. Oh and did I mention that you’re not going to leave a hole in your wallet? Tasty + Cheap. If you like wasting money, I can recommend a few other spots near by, but otherwise I say stick with Carmela’s Taqueria!

Dont let the size of this place fool you. They are the real deal. Carmelitas is by far the best mexican food i’ve had in the midwest. The Al pastor is extra juicy and very savory. Plus the location is prime. Very close to a train stop, and extremely walkable. An excellent lunch!

I ordered the al pastor and lengua tacos here. They’re pretty decent, and I’m a fan. I finally found a taco place near my work that I enjoy. They’re not gross like the tacos at Crew Bar(I don’t care that they have $ 1 tacos… they’re not worth it). They’re way better than the tacos at Fiesta Mexicana because they don’t have fillers like lettuce in their tacos… just plain onions and cilantro. Yum!

Soooo… I know you have heard this before but honestly… if I could give 0 stars I would! Called at 7:39pm, delivered at 9:42pm!!! Several calls later-I’ll spare you the«why didn’t you just cancel the order», «why didn’t you just order other food» comments– we did cancel the order… we did eat other food. This became principle after the last time my husband called at 9:08pm inquiring about the order and spoke to the man on the phone saying, ’ we will write a Unilocal review’ and him saying ‘I don’t care what you do’. We Said we will not pay for the order and we wish to cancel. Fast forward(IE…we ate a REAL dinner) the door bell rings at 9:42pm with our delivery. Husband says ‘peace’, guy says ‘huh’, husband ‘bye Felicia, talk your boss. We already ate!’ Driver: ‘so you don’t want the food?’ ??? Sooooo, good luck with that!

This hole in the wall serves the best al pastor tacos. Seriously. Carmela got me addicted on those al pastor tacos. I’ve tried plenty of Mexican restaurants and to my surprise, this is the best place to get al pastor. If you’re really hungry, I suggest getting a burrito. Tacos ain’t going to fill you up. It’s really good if you get the extra stuff in it. I can’t say anything for the other kind of meats because I have yet to try them. But after trying the al pastor, you don’t need to think about trying anything else. Try the al pastor(tacos or burrito), and your tastebuds will thank you later.

This is a tremendous place to go for tacos and burritos and really any sort of Mexican food you desire. We ordered tacos al carne and al pollo which were both delicious. There was a special with rice and beans — quite worth it. It was also very filling. I would recommend it and will likely come back.

Oh man, when I move away from Uptown I’m surely going to miss Carmela’s. The al pastor is spinning their next to the grill when you walk in, just waiting for you to order it. The guys who work the grill and prep are so good at what they do, so I also enjoy watching them at work. Plus, they’re sorta in cahoots with the Uptown Chicken place next door so every now and then if they run out of an ingredient you’ll see someone scurry outside and run into the building next door to get what they needed.(Ex: Last time I was there I got chips and guac [which is delicious and well worth the price, given that the size is huge] and they didn’t have chips ready. So, he ran next door and 2 minutes later I had some chips with my guac.)

Basically, I’m the luckiest gal in the world because my office is right across the street. This place is super quick, so fresh, amazing red salsa, and super cheap. Street tacos(cilantro and onion) are the jam, and they will make burritos with any combo of ingredients at no extra charge. The chicken comes from the chicken grill next door(read: amazing) and the pastor is on point. I have to trick myself into not going here every day. Pretty sure this is the best Taqueria in Chicago.

I went for a cinco de mayo taco fix & picked up 3 tacos al pastor to go. Service was friendly and fairly quick, my tacos were made fresh and the sauces were as good as ones I’ve had in Mexico. Unfortunately, the tacos were very mediocre — pretty bland without the sauces, no pineapple, and just overall MEH. I probably won’t be back — there are better taco joints in this city. I’d rather pay more for more flavor! If I was next door at the Green Mill and hankerin’ for a taco, I might give them another shot, but otherwise, I’ll look for my al pastor fix elsewhere!

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Carmela’s yet! I’ve been a loyal customer for about six years, ever since my wonderful days barista-ing at the Starbucks across the street.(No review needed, that’s the best Starbucks in Chicago, but anyway.) Service is always super friendly, al pastor is The Best Ever, guacamole is made fresh to death, horchata is perfect, prices are just right. What could be better?! I’m moving out of the neighborhood in a couple months and will definitely be making trips back just for my al pastor and carne asada tacos!

The food is good here. The Al Pastor is legit. However, I’ve been by this place around 9:40 — 9:55pm several times and it seems like the employees like to lock the doors 20 – 30 minutes before their posted closing time of 10:00. I’ve been here around closing time and each time they close their doors early. Plus, they never answer the phone for pick up order because the employees here care more about going home early rather than serving customers like they’re supposed to. It’s frustrating because I like the food here.

Decent tacos going on here! Too bad this place closes kind of early on weekends(10PM) as I imagine they would be held in a higher regard. With a place like Uptown Lounge that stays open untl 4am across the street on Broadway, they would probably do well if they stayed open later as Uptown Lounge & Green Mill does not serve food. On to the meal! I got 3 tacos($ 2.25 each) that were pretty good and soaked up my numerous drinks from the Green Mill. I got the carne asada, al pastor and the chorizo. The first two were good, but the chorizo was just ok. The place was quite populated for 9:30pm on a Sunday night as there were families, drunkards and tourists in this joint.
