Love this bakery but this Sunday when I went to pick up my Mom’s b-day –tres leches café Tacuba-we were very disappointed. It was so dry! Has management changed here? Cutting corners to save on cost? I’ve never had a bad cake from you guys. :(

I’ve been here plenty of times throughout the years they’ve been open in this location. I recommend the place because the cakes are amazing!!! The reason I’m giving them three stars is because of the customer service. I called in my order and the girl on the phone was incredibly rude and seemed as if she was doing me some favor by even talking to me. When I arrived a few days later to pick my cake up, I’m assuming it was the same person… again, incredibly rude. I’m not going to stop buying cakes from Bom Bön but I will however not be buying them from This location.

Two words: «the bomb,» or «très bon,» or perhaps I should just say that I got my «bomb on.» In any case, I had no idea that Bombon had reopened a location on 18th Street in Pilsen, on the south side of the street, very close to the place they had on the north side of the street until it burned down years ago. While I’ve been a number of times to their café on Ashland(not recently enough to qualify for a review), the 18th Street location, then and now, is like Bombon«Unplugged»: just the cakes to go, and nothing more. A friend of mine was having a birthday party for herself, and she said that there would be booze but no cake. Whaaaattt? This is a friend who is special to me, and the thought of her celebrating with no candles, meaning no wish, was untenable. I thought of bringing a bottle of Champagne and taping a candle to the top, but that simply would not have been right. This was a decennial birthday, after all.(And much as I like to tease her, this delicate secret was safe with me.) The occasion called for a proper cake. I informed her as much by text, and that I would take matters into my own hands. «LOL,» she replied. I hadn’t needed a cake in a long time, but Bombon came to mind, and: Surprise! They were back in Pilsen. I Divvyed over on a Saturday afternoon and we were in business. They had at least eight or ten different flavors of medium-sized cakes in stock, with a helpful young woman providing the color(flavor?) commentary. Chocolate caught my eye and my Pavlovian tongue, as did caramel, but I chose the Kahlua trés leches as it was a bit classier. Needless to say, I did not Divvy home, because I didn’t want to show up with half of the cake stuck to the sides of the box. It made it to the party intact, and it was a hit: elegant presentation, subtle coffee flavor, and perfectly moist cake layers(though truth be told, how could it not be moist with trés types of leche in it?). In fact, one of her closest friends had surprised her with another cake that couldn’t hold a candle(or multiple decennials of candles, had I not kept her little secret) to the one from Bombon. This place ain’t cheap, but that gorgeous smile of hers did shine brightly, transforming from that everyday«LOL» to starlight, in response to the sentiment, or at least the flavor.
