If your typical image of a Pilates/gyrokinesis studio is a crowded, cramped space trying to maximize the hourly value of its expensive equipment, you should check out 5th Line. This spacious, quiet studio a block north of the Merchandise Mart focuses on private sessions with expert trainers. I’m usually the only one being trained at any given time no matter what part of the day I come. Better yet, there is plenty of open space between the machines so I’m not constantly tripping over stuff. But enough about the space, what about the practice? Tim, the owner, trains pro dancers, big-name athletes and pop stars. For an average guy like me — desk job writing software, bike commuter, plenty of past injuries and spinal issues — he provides the same friendly, respectful and expert instruction. I’d been doing Pilates for about three years after a herniated disk in my neck nixed my 15-year weightlifting habit. But my back problems continued to get worse. I’d heard Gyrotonics/gyrokinesis might be a better fit, and it’s true. But Tim didn’t give me the hard sell. He just slowly started working with me on all my various aches and pains while slowly ramping up the intensity of the workouts. By answering all of my questions, explaining the techniques, and helpfully discussing the differences between Pilates and gyrokinesis, he helped me decide it was time to focus almost completely on gyro and scale back on the joint– and back-stressing spring work of Pilates. I’m 10 sessions in and I’ve upped my frequency to twice a week. I’m about to re-up for another 20 sessions. My posture and gait have improved, my joints and spine are more supported and less painful, and I can’t believe I’m paying the same hourly rate to do exercises more suitable for my body type, injuries, gender and fitness goals that I was for Pilates in a crowded studio. 5th Line for the win!
