I’ll start this off saying that I’ve consistently gone to mitsuba for years now and have always had the best experiences. When I went for dinner this Friday night it was packed and we were told there was going to be a 20 minute wait.(this was normal). We weren’t seated until 40 min after we arrived and every party that arrived before ANDAFTER us was seated before our party of 4. After we were finally seated, we waited for 10 minutes with no waitress or menus before I got up and said something to the manager. Finally we got menus but then the waitress didn’t come back for another ten minutes.(also normally they bring hot towels to wash your hands with before your meal, which we didn’t get) after we ordered, 10 minutes later our appetizer order of vegetable fried rice came out, which was dropped on the table, & then the waitress disappeared without giving us forks or plates. Were four people all supposed to share one bowl and spoon? Again I had to ask the manager for silverware. Finally our food came out another 10 minutes later. All said and done this ended up being an almost 3 hour meal filled with nothing but disappointment from one of my favorite restaurants.

Mitsuba used to be our go-to place for Sushi since we left NYC. However, the quality of the fish has really gone down in the last year. We don’t know what changed, but it has definitely done so for the worst, The salmon has been mushy and seemingly not fresh, as well as the tuna. What good is a selection of rolls when the fish is subpar? From a strong 4 to a weak 3, and sinking. We would absolutely love a comeback though.

Fresh sushi, creative rolls. Good for dining in or take-out. Salad with ginger dressing could have been a bit better drained/dried – too watery. Just a good local sushi joint.

I order from Mitsuba once a week for take out. The quality of the sushi is average but consistent. A few observations that may or may not influence your enjoyment: The sushi is not made by Japanese folks(it’s own by either Korean or Chinese and there don’t appear to be any Japanese working the sushi bar. All of the remaining comments draw from this: Given the above, the rolls, etc. are not expertly crafted, sometimes fall apart, etc. They do get the presentation right a lot of times, but a Japanese place would always get everything right. Never been sick despite having made almost a hundred orders already. If you are Japanese or frequent Japanese kitchens, you might be annoyed by the blandness/lack of authenticity of most of the food. Most Americans like me won’t notice though. These folks are not buying fish from a market like a pro-place might, and major foodies will notice that the fish is not on par with what you might find in even an average Manhattan Japanese-owned sushi place

Good selection of specialty rolls, however the sushi wasn’t the freshest. Shumai was great; kani was good, but not great/fresh. However, I will give kudos for having Tamari soy sauce as I was with a gluten-free friend. Worst part of the meal was the mochi ice cream — could have easily been plastic casing it was so hard/stale.

Limited options for sushi in the Chatham area. I ordered the spicy tuna tartare and one of their special rolls. Shrimp tempura with spicy tuna and caviar. The issue I had with the dishes was that the spicy tuna, well, wasn’t really spicy at all. The tartare sits on an avocado base. Normally a great pairing with something spicy as it provides great contrast, but when the tuna is already somewhat bland, the avocado just hides the flavor of the tuna. It needed some acid or spice of some kind. The other issue is that rolls are really thick! So thick that I had trouble fitting a single piece into my mouth. You almost had to bite it in half and deal with the roll coming apart on the plate. Otherwise the sushi was. A place I’ll go to for a change of pace and don’t feel like traveling far. Also, on the plus side, it looked well maintained and the staff was very courteous and friendly.

Amazing sushi, lunch specials are great. The service is pretty good, however it is a little pricey. I still love eating here, definitely the best sushi around in my opinion.

Love this place! Everything we’ve tried is delicious(although I’m a particularly big fan of the sashimi deluxe, which I get pretty often). The sushi is probably the best I’ve had in North Jersey. Mitsuba is so good that we often have them deliver to Summit, choosing them over any of the average sushi places that are closer by.

I love their spicy Maki combo. Very fresh fish and just perfectly spiced. It also comes with a side salad with a great ginger dressing and miso soup. Our go-to sushi restaurant in Chatham.

Friday lunch time, excellent service. Excellent food. The lunch box for 12 bucks is fair. The rolls are a bit pricey. Best option in Chatham.

Stopped by here while visiting some of the inlaws. Great quality sushi at reasonable prices; Would recommend checking out some of the original dishes here. I had the magic and dragon crunchy roll. They were dipped in a sauce I hadn’t had previously in sushi restaurants and nicely decorated. I’m not really a fish afficionado so I couldn’t tell how fresh it was, but it was a very nice atmosphere, clean and spacious and on Sundays you can always catch the game or talk to a friend without too much chatter in the meantime. Highly recommended if in chatham looking for a good relaxing sushi spot.

The ginger salad dressing is some of the best I’ve tasted. Creamy. Strong. Drinkable. Had the Lover Roll(lobster)and Fancy Roll(tuna). Each come with the sauces on the side which is a plus because they were sweet and mayo based.(Check out the pics). Very filling. Should have only gotten one because they are specialty rolls, but they were delicious. Service was great! Constant refills on the water. Only knock is I was extremely thirsty all night and was left with a slightly bad taste and dry mouth. Price you pay I guess? Probably all the salt. Oh, and price was reasonable. A little over $ 30 for 2 special rolls and a salad.

After so many wonderful meals here, we placed a take out order on a super busy Friday night. Yes, I will caveat this updated review with the fact that it was take-out. And generally we never order in because it is never as fresh. But given the usual high quality and freshness of the sashimi we are used to, I had no reason to think tonight would not be good. In fact, 3 stars might be generous. The live scallop sashimi special was terrific as usual as was the yellowtail carpaccio appetizer. So yummy! But the fluke appetizer, and sashimi platters(all individually selected by me) were actually not good at all. The white tuna was fishy, the fluke tough, the salmon sliced so thick and chewy, the toro sashimi warm and almost too mushy(we know a good fatty tuna but this was just not good texture), and the uni(which was a special) was plain bad-it tasted over cooked and sour! To their credit, they provided us with plenty of ponzu sauce and extra pickled ginger as requested. The kitchen seemed overwhelm(it took 75 minutes from time of order to be ready – and we were told 30 minutes) and on numerous occasions the woman at the front and on the phone kept harping about how big our order was and that it was too much food for four people! We didn’t order any rolls other than two naruto rolls and two no rice hand rolls! Not that we care what she says or thinks but it struck us all a little strange that she kept basically saying she couldn’t believe how much we were eating! Just a very unusual and less than pleasant exchange. Still.our friends enjoyed their food at our house and we will return in person in hopes that this was just a very off night. But who wants any«off» night when it comes to raw fish?

I am a regular at this fantastic sushi place. Their menu is very good, their fish is excellent and they do their best to meet your needs. They are BYOB which is an added plus. I highly recommend it.

Mitsuba was fantastic. This is one of the better sushi spots I’ve eaten at in quite some time, and I knew I had to post a review as soon as I got in. I don’t know what anyone below is talking about in reference to the sushi being old or smelly, or tasting fishy; it couldn’t be more of the opposite from my experience here… Our salads with ginger dressing were fantastic as appetizers, which I’m a HARSH critic for. The dressing was nice and thick; tangy and just a bit sweet. The offerings, like many have said below me, are definitely interesting. They have some unique rolls with good combos, but personally, I’m a classic roll kinda feller… The actual rolls we got were terrific — warm, big, and fresh as can be. The spicy tuna, spicy scallop, futo maki, and spicy yellow tail rolls all came out perfectly and tasted great. The consistency of them were spot-on. The service was also quick, with our waitress being completely satisfactory. When in Chatham, this is your spot. You won’t regret it. BONZAI!!!

i have been to this place once and won’t be back. I generally love Japanese food and sushi in particular. If you fall in that camp you will be very disappointed unless they had a bad night. Sushi quality — very poor. big pieces of fish that had a fishy taste to them. Could barely choke them down and had a worry that I might get sick(I didn’t). However if you understand what its like to eat fish that is too cold and too old you may get a sense. Too much rice and it wasn’t well prepared(ie cold, stuck together vs being the type of sushi rice that you find in finer establishments). Teriyaki — huge portion of terrible teriyaki. The taste was sauteed vs grilled. sauce was too much and not good. am stunned that people actually like this place.
