Knight’s Gambit is a tough one to rate. The setting was wonderful and it’s hard not to appreciate a place that provides a home to retired racing horses and rescue dogs. The 4 wines were middle of the road, but I didn’t dislike any of them. The main complication is the tastings are done in a tent. While that’s perfect on a nice day, it’s definitely a good-weather only tasting experience. The name has a double meaning. Knight’s Gambit is the name of a Faulkner book(actually a collection of short stories), and not coincidently Faulkner himself is a relative of one of the owners. It’s also a high risk chess move — not unlike the risk inherent in opening a winery. With only 4 wines on the menu — two reds and two whites — there isn’t a lot to choose from. I did enjoy sitting down with a glass of the Pinot Grigio and scratching the belly of one dogs. You can also visit the horse stables as well — several of the horses were really beautiful. It’s worth a trip just for that. This is definitely a place for animal lovers and people who just plain enjoy an outdoor tasting experience. Since it’s a smaller tasting menu, it’s worth squeezing it in during a wine trail among the larger places nearby.
