great waitress and really exceptional hostess! super dog friendly(had actual dog bowls for water) and even asked if it was ok with us for the next person who had a dog to be seated near us. interesting food that was delicious! good greasy bar food as well with lots of salad options if that is your style too. but I do suggest asking for dressing on the side(they are fans of heavy dressing!)

The premise was straight forward … Along with four other Unilocal Elite Finalists nominated for the Unilocalie 2015 Writer Award, I was given an opportunity to reach out to Hanna Raskin, Food Editor of the Post and Courier, to provide my thoughts on the Charleston Unilocal culture, the subject of an upcoming article in the Wednesday Food Section of the Newspaper. The place, date and time was set by Hanna. Though I knew the other invitees by name and activity on Unilocal I had not met them prior to the dinner. I was warmly greeted at the hostess station and directed to the right side of the restaurant into an imposing area that provided seating at the bar, or at one of the many gleaming wood high tops. Two other finalists were already seated at a hightop when I arrived. After some time, the server took our food and beverage order. My drink was rather straight forward … a white wine spritzer; however, our server returned with a just a glass of wine. How was it corrected? With a glass of ice and a glass of club soda! My radar was now way up. Each of us selected an entrée. Three starters, selected for sharing and tasting, were ordered for the table and arrived soon after the beverages. The Barbeque Shrimp was neither conducive, for sharing, or, a starter. The tails were removed, requiring each of us to dig in with our forks to get a shrimp that was smothered in a dark sauce that I would quickly see was heavy on butter. I gauged the size of the portion and speared two, apparently, seized up shrimp. They were tough, and small(the picture is deceiving) and other than the sweet and savory flavor of the Worcestershire sauce, the shrimp lacked any kick. In a word … disappointing. The Santa Fe Flatbread tasted just meh and frankly, looked like frozen pizza. All I could taste was the heat of the chile. A thinner crust, less chile and sour cream on the side would have worked better for me. The(3) Mini Lamb Burgers left me wanting more. The ground lamb lacked ‘spices’ leaving it bland and boring. The onion chutney lacked the complex flavors usually associated with this complex and flavorful condiment. The Tzatziki topping and thin side pickle rounds were OK but not enough to carry the dish. Before we were finished with the starters, our server arrived with several of the entrees which were sent back until we were ready. This, error, again, suggested the inexperience of the server. Already familiar with the Fungi Burger and Pan Seared Chicken(I am a frequent diner at Coleman Public House) I did not taste either of these dishes; however, my interest was piqued, and perhaps, not in a good way, in the Encrusted Tuna. My suspicion was confirmed … this dish missed the mark. The mouthful of yellowfin tuna I tasted was tough and overcooked … probably due to the time needed to adequately bake the pastry crust. A grilled version would have shined. On the bright side, I actually enjoyed the sticky rice, served as a cake … crunchy on the outside … creamy on the inside! When selecting the Cobb, I anticipated a salad, composed of ingredients that were diced and neatly arranged in rows; however, my dish was anything but orderly. Perhaps, the best way to describe it was a hot mess. Sure, it was colorful and good looking but a ‘traditional’ Cobb, it wasn’t. Except for the line of diced tomatoes, the remaining ingredients were unattractively placed on top of the greens … crescents of overly ripe avocado, a mound of finely grated egg yolk, scattered and diced egg white, a handful of less-than-moist grilled chicken, a pile of Pecan Smoked Bacon strips … each, a few inches long. Frankly, I couldn’t wait for the server to box it up. One of my companions was interested in the Crème Brulee. I did not get a ‘good’ taste but I liked the way the crunchy burnt sugar topping was balanced against the creamy custard. Our evening was drawing to a close. On my way out the door, I stopped on the other side of the restaurant to check out the large dining room which was configured with a good number of tables and booths around the perimeter. Though pleasing to the eye I felt the space lacked character. My takeaway … Maybank Public House is a great addition to the James Island dining scene for casual food and light conversation. Stick with the basics … a signature burger … Caesar … Wedge and you’ll be very satisfied.

Had the pleasure of checking out the much anticipated Maybank Public House. Having never been to the Coleman Public House, which I am hearing has the same/similar menu, I came with no expectations for my palette. I walk in and was immediately greeted by the host. My party is in the bar area, which only has high top tables for seating. They have a separate area with booths too, so dont fret. There weren’t that many people there when we first arrived at 7, but it quickly filled up within an hour of us being there. That said, and strictly speaking about the bar area, as the space gets fuller, the volume gets crazy high. It is so loud. At 8pm, its 1am standing room only bar scene loud. It was near impossible for me to hear the people sitting at my table, and I had to really project when speaking. My voice carries a bit, so when I have to yell to be heard by my neighbor, that’s loud. We ordered a few apps to go around, including the BBQ Shrimp, Southwestern Flatbread, and Lamb Sliders. Upon ordering the lamb sliders, they do ask you how you want it cooked which was nice. The BBQ shrimp was salty to me. Buried in a cajun BBQ sauce, I found it overwhelming and salty, so not something I would order again. I was excited about the lamb burgers. You get three little burgers on those little Hawaiian type rolls, and all I tasted when I ate them was those little Hawaiian type rolls. The little patty was completely enveloped by the roll. So I removed the roll, and just ate the meat, and we got something here. Maybe if the little sliders were a little meatier, I’d recommend it, but as they are, a pass. Now the Flatbread – win win WIN! I loved it. Black bean(hummus texture) was the spread, with grilled chicken, tomatoes, red onions, corn… with all of these yummy peppers and spices: slam dunk. The flat bread is the perfect tasty share for a table. While we were eating the appetizers, our meals came out. We were square in the middle of the appetizers, not almost done, smack in the middle, of them, so we asked that our entrée’s be taken back while we get the chance to eat our apps. Im fairly sure it was a good 10 minutes or so that passed since the food was taken back to the kitchen before it was brought back to our table. So for 10 minutes or so, our food was just chilling in the kitchen… The food wasn’t lukewarm, in fact, it was actually hot, but because my entrée had cream sauce drizzled on top, I could tell it was sitting for a bit. A little bit of a boo on that… For my entrée, I ordered the Pan Seared Chicken. It wasnt quite what I was expecting, but basically, it was a bone in grilled chicken breast on top of a mix of orzo, spinach, and a cream sauce. Im not sure what I was expecting, but this dish was kind of a flavorless mesh of the above. Pass on that, and onto the 2 clear winners of the table: The cobb salad and the burger. The cobb salad was enormous. It looked green, healthy and hearty – the kind of salad that reminds you that salads can be meals, and arent just for the peckish. Then there was the Fungi Burger. It was just pretty. It was a pretty burger. A picture worthy burger. Im convinced that looks werent deceiving because she sang the burgers praises along with the truffle fries. All burgers come with hand cut fries, or add on truffle fries for .95. If I go back to Maybank Public House, I would definitely get a burger. A veggie Burger. A Fungi Veggie Burger. ahhhh yeaahh… Done. Topped off our meal with a crème brûlée which was veryyy thick and custard-y. Crème brûlée is supposed to be light, right? I dont know. it was ok though, since I like custard, but not something I would order again. I like Maybank Public House. Decent prices, hearty plates, and nice variety. Something for everyone kind of place – very cool and worth a visit.

I’ve never tried any of the Public House locations so I was thrilled when I was treated to dinner at the Maybank Public House. When I walked in the door, I was ushered to the right side which is the bar area with high top tables. From what a coworker shared with me, the left side is composed of booths so I’d guess primarily a dining area arrangement. I noticed at one point in the evening that the bar area was pretty busy. It didn’t come off as hectic but as lively and fun. Excellent vibe, and impressive for a Tuesday night! It would be nice to have booth options on the bar side as well. Although I’m tall, after a few hours of sitting on those higher chairs, my legs started to feel numb which was uncomfortable. You’re more likely to spend a few hours hanging out on the bar side so options besides high tops wouldn’t be a bad idea. Also it seemed the high top tables were maybe a bit too close? Again I’m tall, but my knees had to be pressed against the table base in order to have enough room for someone to squeeze past me and the person sitting at the table behind me. I was able to sample a variety of dishes and overall I recognized the quality of the dishes. As far as apps, I tried the BBQ shrimp, southwestern flatbread and lamb sliders. The shrimp were my favorite! Very flavorful, cooked perfectly, hearty portion size. I wasn’t sure about the southwestern flatbread, but after a few bites, I was a fan. Nice heat! I’d heard a lot of good things about the lamb sliders so I was disappointed they weren’t tastier. I liked the tzatziki but personally felt the meat patty needed more flavor as it came off bland. I’d try again just to see if it was a one time thing because it certainly wasn’t bad. I ordered the fungi burger with truffle fries. It was very good! I did notice some uneven cooking, and while some bites were flavorful, others weren’t which made me think the burger patty wasn’t evenly seasoned. One of my dining companions ordered the Cobb salad and it was massive! It looked delicious too. I was able to sample a bit of the Encrusted Tuna. I love tuna but was hesitant about their version because in was encased in a thin pastry. I thought it tasted delicious! I’d definitely order this dish in the future. Although stuffed to the gills, I was glad dessert was ordered. There’s no dessert menu but our server easily rattled off several delectable sounding dessert options. We settled on the crème brulee and I thought it was delicious! Nice, crispy caramel shell topping, creamy custard-like inside, I thoroughly enjoyed it. All in all, I thought it was a solid experience. I enjoyed their version of a Moscow Mule… twice! Made with fresh ginger which was a nice touch. We were checked on several times, not only by our server but by other employees as well. I noticed other tables getting the same attention as well. Seems they not only want to provide good food & drinks, but they also focus on providing good service. If loud establishments bother you, be aware that it can get loud in there, at least on the bar side. That didn’t bother me and I would return to Maybank Public House in a heartbeat.

Their burgers were cooked to perfection and their truffle Parmesan fries are to die for. There was a crest selection of craft beers. For sure going back!

I have been here around 10 times since it has opened and I have never been disappointed. The burgers here are awesome and they also have lamb burgers for the people who don’t eat beef. Its a overall good and friendly atmosphere with a cleaner and more classy vibe then your average watering hole. Having been to Coleman Public House, this place does it justice and I am excited to have it on this side of Downtown!

As a fan of Coleman Public House, it’s not shocking that I like Maybank as well for all the same reasons: great craft beer list, good late-night food options, friendly service and awesome music! One upside to Maybank is the atmosphere — I like the setup and décor of Maybank very much. Coleman tends to look more traditional: Maybank has a more modern vibe, and their space is more amenable towards folks who just want to drink and not necessarily dine at the restaurant. I went there late on a Saturday evening to grab a few pints and order some of that amazing Rosemary Popcorn! Staff was super friendly and VERY tolerant of my group’s somewhat rowdy behavior. This is another solid outpost to a local«chain» that makes me want to continue to frequent both locations well into the future. I’m just so glad there’s more than one out there!

Just went here with one of my BFFs and we split a vegetable burger and garlic fries and had our favorite Moscow mule known as the Maybank mule here. Were greeted by friendly staff and headed to the bar nice to see what they’ve done with Brett’s old place little bit cold on a chilly afternoon but overall nice vibe. Service was quick and courteous food was tasty and the garlic fries were especially yummy look forward to going back and trying some of their other menu items and thankful for this nice and welcomed addition to the neighborhood.

I’ve been to Coleman Public house plenty of times so my expectations were already there. I didn’t know if it would be the same, but I figured it would at least be a similar concept. Turns out, they’ve done a great job replicating the Coleman location over on Maybank Hwy. I came in for lunch at sat in the bar area. The great thing about this location is that the bar area is probably twice the size and they have significantly more taps here too. After looking at the menu, I’m pretty sure it’s exactly the same. To get a good gauge on the place, I went with a burger and the one with blue cheese and onion straws is a favorite of mine. Everything was just as good as the OG Public House and the fries were perfect as well. Great job on the new location!

During our new restaurant trying day last weekend, our second spot was another place with the word House in it. That wasn’t planned that way either! Anyway, we headed to James Island to check out the MPH with another big group of friends. I had made reservations and thankfully so b/c the place was packed with a lot of lively people. Since I’d never been I didn’t know what to expect, and it was definitely happening. We ended up ordering the baby back ribs under the guidance of a couple of regulars we meet at the bar. They were correct in leading us that route. Everyone that tried them, enjoyed them. Good flavor and very tender. The reason we picked MPH in the first place was to go have a good burger and we found good burgers. I had the Southern with pepperjack cheese, friend green tomoto and spicy Remoulade and was so satisfied. It was excellent! The meat was seasoned perfectly and I loved the accompaniments. Perfect selection for me. The server was great and all of our bills were separated and tallied correctly making for an exceptional experience all around.

Awesome staff and wonderful food options. So happy for it to open. However, this is overshadowed with how loud both the bar and dining room are with more than a few people there. It gets to the point it is almost impossible to have a conversation across the table. If it wasn’t for this fact I would give it 5 stars! The only other suggestion is there are only bar seats or 6 tops in the bar area it would be great if two or four tops could be added. Keep up the good work with a few tweaks this place will be perfect!

So, yes they are related to the Coleman Public House in Mt Pleasant. The staff was friendly and quick. Tons of beer selection. The atmosphere was definitely relaxing. It was a little dark inside and very quiet. Kinda expected it to be louder. No idea why. Anyway, I ordered the steak sandwich with side of Mac. I remember the Mac and Cheese being delicious at the Coleman Public House and It was. My only thing is that when the steak was hot the meat was so thick it was difficult to eat as a sandwich. I had to eat it with a knife and fork until it cooled off. The Cuban was better even if it was a little spicy. Must’ve been the mustard. Makes for even better leftovers. Now I know what your gonna ask, why would I give it 3 Stars but the reason for the 3 stars was strictly for the fact that this place didn’t stand out like the sister location in Mt Pleasant did. Which we’ve been talking about going back to since July 2014. So, we can try other food items. If only it wasn’t so far into Mt Pleasant. So we were excited that they had a closer location. Please don’t think I’m giving it a negative review I’m not. I just think they could step up to the level of expectation that Coleman had. Which we still rave about after 18 months.

great service, excellent food, many reasonably priced choices, but often zero parking and some way overpriced items like $ 12 burgers, lol it’s James Island not Kiawah… may as well go to McCradys

Delicious! I hadn’t realized this had opened– I think it is fairly new.(Related to the Coleman Public House, I believe.) Staff was friendly and came around at the right times, weren’t too pushy. Drinks were always filled and the food was delicious! Some of the best fish and chips I have had in Charleston. Their beer selection was plentiful, too. Def will be back and recommend this place for anyone in the area– a good dinner before the Terrace, for sure!

What can I say… my first trip to Maybank Public House was amazing. My boyfriend and I started with sharing the Napoleon Green Tomato starter. After the first bite, I wished I’d ordered one all for myself. Perfectly presented and assembled. For my entrée, I ordered the Encrusted Tuna. And it was one of the best dishes I’ve had so far on my visits to Charleston! My boyfriend’s burger was absolutely delish and would order again in a heartbeat, but after trying my tuna, he had a little plate envy! I will go back for this dish again and again! Service was attentive, fast and friendly, atmosphere was modernly rustic and lovely, and food was outstanding! A total win all around!

My Barnyard burger(cooked medium) and my fiancée’s red curry salmon(cooked medium well) were both… bland, at best. They sound delicious, but failed to hit home with what one would expect. The burger patty was tasteless, but the toppings were great. The salmon, I tried some, tasted like plain old salmon with no hint of curry. I got lamb burgers to share to start, and the patties there, too, were bland. I went in wanting them to be great, but they didn’t impress me with those two dishes; maybe it was the busy Friday night that they rushed things out, but I’m not sure. The garlic fries were good, though. I will go back and try more of the menu & update as necessary.

1st visit with a friend and we only had the beet salad and California burger. Great service and food. Can’t wait to go back and try some of the other entrée’s and appetizers. Nice wine selection and craft beers. Not sure if domestics were available or variety of mixed drinks. Will find out next time. Only suggestion and reason for 4 not 5 stars is that I think they have plenty of space in bar area to add more 4 top tall tables in the bar. As it was getting busier and besides seating at the bar, all that was available was 6 top tall tables. The 2 of us were sitting at a 6 top and felt we needed to finish up to allow others to dine.

Well, I’d like to start with the fact that everything was really, really good and far exceeded my expectations(meaning most restaurants just don’t bring it fully and I go home semi unimpressed) including the smiley, funfiled service(Tatianna). This means a lot to me. We started with the arugula/beet/pecan encrusted goat cheese salad(it was really a powerful great flavor mix) but the best part, even though it was all great, was the goat cheese rolled in the warm crunchy pecans with the maple vinaigrette and then… the ale steamed local clams in an absolutely Frigging delicious broth and mixed with red bell peppers and the best Chorizo I’ve had sprinkled in and on the clams and it came with 3 toast points that were covered saffron aioli which dipped in the broth was simply spectacular. The toast points were so good I ordered another round of them. I would order them again today, right now. For entrees we had red curry rubbed salmon. Spicy and delicious served over lemon grass and ginger rice and baby bok choy with the coconut and red curry sauce over the partially blackened salmon(which was cooked to tender/moist perfection) It was all really good but honestly, the book choy is rediculously hard to cut. Even though it tasted good the struggle to manage it was distracting. Perhaps it should be cut/chopped before placement. Slight issue. I had the California burger which I think is terrific. I’m not sure what is used to season this burger but it is awesome. Nothing else is required or should be added. So many great flavors from the cheese, the bacon, the avocado, the sprouts and the specialty roll. Just enjoy it as it is. I didn’t really care for the truffle and parmesan fries. They were a bit heavy on the oil flavor and that hid the cheese and truffle flavors. In fact, I brought half the burger home for lunch today and reheated everything and there’s still fries left. Could be my particular tastes cause eating the parm alone is delicious but it didn’t carry on to the fries. The draft beer selection is quite varied and wide. I found that the server didn’t know as much as she possibly could have and couldn’t help me make my choice but this was resolved by allowing me to taste samples of what ever I wanted. That wins every time and I had a superb brown ale from, I think, somewhere relatively near. The topper of the evening that was truly exquisite was the Gran Marnier crème brûlée. God, is that good. The setting is nice, simply and clean. The greeters and serving staff are good, happy and attentive but the kudos really go to behind the scene kitchen crew. Really, splendid! If you get the chance go here and try it out. Charleston is know for its great food and this place is another addition in that category

James island now has a great place to meet at for beers and burgers. We ate dinner the third night they were open and was not disappointed. Everything came out spot on. Their burgers are are excellent. The right temp as requested, the fresh artesian bun and golden hand cut fries. We also had the calamari which was great. The fish and chips was an excellent choice. The bar has a lot of space with natural light. The bar tables seat up to six and can accommodate a large group. MPH, welcome to the neighborhood.
