My friends and I booked a two hour cruise with captain Steve. I should have known from his demeanor, and less than social attitude during booking that something would go wrong. We arrived a few minutes late, the boat was pretty and ready to go. The first mate was social and pleasant. Steve was not. He made us feel like he was doing us a favor, allowing us on his boat. Long story short, the trip was fine, nothing spectacular. The mate poured a couple of glasses of champagne(that we had purchased). At the end of the cruise, I told the first mate I wasn’t sure how tip worked, but gave her 150.00 cash(the trip was 790.00). She seemed appreciative. But suddenly, whereas we only had the 790.00 pending charge, we were suddenly charged additional gratuity and tax. I called Steve and extremely politely stated that there may have been a miscommunication about tip, as we hadn’t intended to spend that much(35%tip close to 300.00). He was hostile and disrespectful, stating that it was COMMON for people who are repeat customers, and enjoyed their experience to tip that much. I said I understood, but it simply wasn’t our intention. His response? «Are you asking me to tell my first mate she has to give you the money back?» I stated I wasn’t sure how tip worked with the two of them, but again, our intention was not to tip that much and I’d like it to be fixed somehow. He said he would get back to me. He never did. I felt disrespected and honestly, quite angry. We are currently disputing the charge with our credit card company.
